That's cool of Mike but what's with The Real Beach Boy's facetious comment? I want to dislike Mike just because off how annoying your comments are.  You are no better than the Brianistas you complain about.

Keep in mind. The name is MICHAEL. The Real Beach Boys knows him. And he prefers Michael. Not Mike.

I've read quite a bit of the Mike hater comments but I don't see the point in making a first post like that to a thread acknowledging him for a good cause. Seems like he's trying to generate some more hateful comments by posting like that.

I couldn't care less but I'll keep that in mind.

C'mon you guys suprised about TRBB being a Lovester? All his avatars are of ML and he constantly bashes anti-Mike sentiment. I don't intend this as criticism, it's just my observation.

Odd isn't it that it seems to be assumed that Beach Boys fans won't be fans of all of the band members and that they must have their allegiances.

I can say the same for the others posting all the hate comments in other threads. At least TRBB used a bit of levity to lighten up an otherwise weak thread. It wasn't directed at Mike at all, but to the members here who have called him greedy. Actually, it annoys me that you didn't understand that.

I am a fan of all of them, warts and all. They are my musical heroes. I don't judge them on personal matters. That is their business, not mine.

I'm actually not a Mikeista. The handle and the avatar is a long-continued joke between another mod and myself. That and it makes for fun discussions on the board. I am a Beach Boys fan, not a Brian Wilson or Michael Love fan.

Me too. I do find it odd though that so many are keen to pigeonhole others with the 'Mikeista', Brianista' labels.

Right on I love The Beach Boys period. That's the only thing I ever try to put across. I remember a Jan and Dean fan who loved only Jan. It's so strange to me. Obviously Roger Waters was the ass of Pink Floyd but I dig his writing anyhow.

Ugh. I was being facetious. I think it's super goofy/lame/whatever that you call Mike "Michael" since nobody does that outside of Brian and Carl a handful of times. Press releases call him Mike. Whenever he appears on TV he is introduced as "Mike Love". He's listed in liner notes as "Mike Love". But to you he's Michael. Yup.  ::)

Jeff introduced him as Michael last year. During the mid-70s Michael was used a lot when introduced or when the guys spoke of him.

He was probably introduced as Michael because saying Mike Edward Love would sound kinda odd. When you say a full name with first middle and last names, you'd use the proper first name.

Yep! Even Al went by Alan for most of the 70's and then went back to Al from the 80s onward.

Even when there's no reason to attack anyone, there's some people to post just to try and be "ironic" and makes this place so sad, what a shame.

I am very well aware of his environmental activism, and I wholly support it. This has been a focus of all of The Beach Boys since the late Sixties, and it is terrific!

I dunno, but you forgot to mention that MIKE Love received a nice tax write-off for this 'charitable donation'.

And the only original band members I've heard call Mike "Michael" is Carl and Dennis (on stage) a couple of times and I can't even remember hearing Brian calling him "Michael".

True fans won't try to tell other fans how they should act.   ;)

Exactly! The City Year program has worked in some very poor schools where I have taught.  They do one-on-one tutoring and other activities with many kids whom might otherwise be forgotten and fail in school.  It has been around a long time and they do a pretty good job matching volunteers with kids in need of TLC and grade improvement.  The kids' attendance improves, motivation and grades.  All good! (Check out the CityYear website!)

Thanks to pass the news. Mike seems to be multi-tasker - sings, sends humanitarian aid to the citizens, makes speeches at various big gatherings etc. Jolly good!

Doo Dah - no bigger fakers than in education, (I hear ya!) - but this group seems ok.

Kids (especially poor ones) have great instinct and can spot a faker a mile away.   ;)

I guess I just don't take the whole fans of Brian vs. fans of Mike thing serious. it's very lame and bitchy to me. Many of the fans here probably argue more than The Beach Boys do. This whole justification of childish posts because "a fan of brianista said this" or "a mike lover said that" is worn out and old.  I like and dislike things about all of The Beach Boys as I'm sure everyone does. Is there nothing more interesting to talk about?

Unfortunately, the David Leaf/Dominic Priore school of thought was a lot of "fans" way-in to The Beach Boys and it's a hard thing to shake off..... The Brian-as-helpless-genius-and-The-Beach-Boys/Mike-as-bastards narrative it just too strong to resist or see around for some, and I can hardly blame them.... At least OSD's Mike hatred was hard earned over decades as an active fan being annoyed by Mike, so I can at least begrudgingly respect it.... But too many others seem like they've just gotten done watching Beautiful Dreamer and are just punch-drunk/misty eyed and are going to stick to that feeling no matter what other information they might be exposed to. And others are just mean people who will kick at an easy target because someone else told them it's OK.

I think it's a trickle down effect. I'll bet a band who all get on well and don't have huge rows, have a fanbase that behaves similarly. The Beach Boys have the fans they deserve.

Really appreciate all the charitable work Mike does, it's one of the best things about the guy. He's done it for a long time and I know he's helped a lot of people out.

That sums up the Beach Boys, their fans and this board pretty much more perfectly than I've ever seen.

What annoys me about all the fans who swallowed Leaf's crap is they all hate Mike with a passion but conveniently seem to forget that he also bashes Carl and Dennis. So if you hate Love because of Leaf's writings than you by proxy should also mildly hate Carl and Dennis too. It's only fair.

Anyway props to anybody who donates to a good cause.

We call him "Mike" because "MICHAEL LOVE NOT WAR" just doesn't work on that (in)famous T-shirt.  :smokin

But it's way too late for him to be known as Michael to the general public.

He's always been a bit of a "climber" but as he's gotten older his give-back has become more focused and more principled. Some of the credit for that should go to Jacqueline, of course; we should not discount her influence on him in what has easily been his most stable, equal, and enduring marriage.

You're asking them to engage in ideological consistency. I dare say you're asking too much.
