Title: Beach Boys Movie Musical
Post by: Letsgoawayforawhile on May 13, 2013, 04:45:08 PM
Here's part of the article;

The pitch then: “The story takes place in Southern California over a summer in the ’60s. It’s inspired by the sounds of the Beach Boys music and the beach culture of that time.” Craig Zadan, Neil Meron and John Stamos are still producing, having teamed previously on the biographical ABC miniseries The Beach Boys: An American Family.

I've said this before. I'm a music theatre actor, and I believe the best way to do their music and their story justice would be to do it in the same format as Jersey Boys. Jersey Boys is so clever, and I think the Beach Boys have a better band history and better music to pull from. Plus, the songs are so personal to Brian Wilson's life (outside of the fun ones of course), that it'd be so easy for them to satisfy musical lovin' people.

I think it should be about a young black man, from a poor area of Kentucky, who dreams of being an acrobat, but is drawn into the shadowy world of breakdancing. He falls in love with a teacher, enters an X Factor style talent show, and eventually finds happiness can be achieved by being himself.

Imagine this with the Beach Boys music!

This would definitely be more interesting.

I don't think the parties would agree on a biographical musical about the Beach Boys. It would be the same problem as "An American Family," but since there would be numerous readings, rehearsals, and try-outs before it would be finalized, it would be more opportunity for any parties that object to any material to get in there and interfere or put a stop to it altogether.

Just imagine John Stamos playing Dennis, singing Forever over and over for all eternity.

What should be done is 'Pet Sounds: The Musical" as a Broadway production.  A great story could be told based on the songs on that album. Forget the surf songs. Add in a few other Beach Boys songs like Good Vibrations and you'd have a great show and story. 'When I grow up to be a man' and 'The little girl I once knew' would work well, too, with the Pet Sounds theme of growing up, becoming an adult, falling in love...

The general public may not know what Pet Sounds is but billed as 'Pet Sounds: The Musical" based on songs by the Beach Boys' it would work.

I've never seen 'Jersey Boys' or any other rock musical but I think something good could be done with  the Beach Boys song book.
