Title: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: hypehat on May 12, 2013, 04:28:20 PM The long rumoured Nilsson boxset has been announced. 17 Discs, which consist of his RCA discography (the task of compiling Popeye, Flash Harry and the rare moment of greatness in the 80's isn't in this sets remit, I guess) and three cds of bonus tracks, and grand total of 75 of those bonus tracks spread amongst the CDs will be unreleased! Hosanna!
http://fortheloveofharrynilsson.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/the-rca-albums-collection-2013.html Given that it's £45 on Amazon and I don't own any Nilsson on CDs of my own, THIS IS A BIT SWEET. Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: EgoHanger1966 on May 12, 2013, 04:43:11 PM Last month, I "discovered" Harry for myself (a bit late to the game, I know, but I'm young and need time to really get into all this stuff), and bought his entire discography up through around 1973. And then THIS is released! At $64 US dollars shipped from Amazon UK, I HAD to bite the bullet - this looks way too good to pass up. I pre-ordered it two days ago and it already feels like an eternity of waiting! And now my other discs are redundant! Oh well. It's gonna be a great summer for all things music.

Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: hypehat on May 15, 2013, 05:35:59 AM Tracklisting.... You Are Here is the most exciting thing on here, it plays so briefly in the documentary and it sounds great. That and it'd be great to get a lot of the stuff that I've got on the Purple Chick series, such as the p*ssy Cats demos, Blackbird, and the superlative 'I Want You To Sit On My Face', in proper quality.
Not to mention You Can't Do That, his multi-faceted Beatles cover... in Italian?! Some stuff I haven't heard of - Nilsson & Dr John playing All I Think About Is You? A song called Ballin' The Jack? I haven't heard of the Saturday Club session. So bummed this doesn't have The Music Of Nilsson though, I'd love the Walk Right Back/Cathy's Clown/Let The Good Times Roll thing in real quality. But yes, the main function of this seems to be gathering up all the bonus tracks under one roof. Brief sourpuss note - Radio Spots fucking suck, y'all. ROLL ON JULY. Of interest, they put up one of the Harry & Dr John collabs on Soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/legacyrecordings/harry-nilsson-ballin-the-jack Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: Amanda Hart on July 26, 2013, 08:56:26 AM I should be getting it on Monday. AAAAAAAAAA I chose economy over speed. The price from Amazon UK was such a good deal that I figured it was worth it to wait a few extra days for it to ship. What a deal it was too. Just over $60 for a lot of stuff I haven't heard and most of the stuff I do have is on vinyl, so it'll be nice to have on CD too. Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: Mooger Fooger on July 26, 2013, 09:20:33 AM The box set arrived today and I can only say, "WOW!" As I had to go to work 30 minutes after getting the set, I went straight to the bonus tracks and can confirm there are many gems in there in pristine quality. Now to do a grand-pooh-bah weekend listen from go to woah. Well worth the money.

Post by: Mooger Fooger on July 26, 2013, 09:46:14 AM Nope it sounds like a studio version, and is a very powerful Nilsson tune - though I will need to check the booklet when I get home for the specs. Right up there with his other golden era material. Ego Hanger beat me to it just as I was typing.
Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: Seaside Woman on July 26, 2013, 09:52:07 AM Okay, thanks both, the unreleased music makes this a worthwhile buy. Nothing wrong with having three or four copies of identical items, is there:)
Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: Mooger Fooger on July 26, 2013, 10:45:03 AM The set alone is simple, yet cool. The CDs are boxed in a mini LP form and certain albums are fold out covers (The Point eg). The audio quality on the unreleased stuff is outstanding. Everything, apart from Flash Harry and Popeye is on there. With Flash Harry coming out on CD anyway, it is a good time to celebrate Nilsson's talents. Does anyone know how difficult it would be to make your own mini-LP cover?
Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: Mooger Fooger on July 27, 2013, 05:49:50 AM Have been playing through more of the set and IT IS WORTH EVERY CENT. I reconfirmed to myself why I consider Harry Nilsson on the same level as Brian Wilson. The man had an intimate understanding of music that I rarely hear. A genius in his own right with a wicked sense of humour and outstanding arrangement and production skills. I am gob smacked!! You owe it to youself to get this set!!!

So curious. I'd say it's radically different, not as long as the album version. Not as heavy by a long shot. I like the single version the best out of all of them (can be found on the box, too). I ordered mine (2 copies) from Amazon.ca (great price about $65 each) but they tell me it won't be in until late Aug and won't be shipped to my place until early Sept. Sad for the delay but excited about the box. With MIC coming at a similar time it may be hard to get work and family time in as I will be listening to piles and piles of glorious cds! Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: Amanda Hart on August 08, 2013, 09:17:51 AM Mine was finally waiting on me when I got home yesterday. It's really nice, simple packaging, which I suppose is how they kept the price so low. The booklet is still nice and informative though. Hopefully I'll have time to really dig into the music today, I'm really looking forward to it.
Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: Mooger Fooger on August 17, 2013, 02:36:34 AM There seems to be problems with the shipping of Flash Harry. Amazon.de informed me that the delivery date has movved from Aug. 14 to Sept 5. Amazon.com say its in stock but requires extra time for processing. What's going on?
Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: Mooger Fooger on September 07, 2013, 02:22:53 PM Received Flash Harry yesterday and it is a beautiful set which sounds fantastic. The release of this album on CD, along with the bonus tracks has elvated my opinion of it. The booklet is exceptional as well. I ordered two copies, as I have a feeling that once it disappears, it will be gone for good.
Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: ontor pertawst on September 08, 2013, 11:53:28 AM I just snagged that as well, what a fun package!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzYEWnetEig I'm still working my way thru the boxed set and have yet to listen to two of the sessions discs. So much good stuff to discover! It's overstuffed, one of the greatest music values ever and... shhh, is getting tons more play around here than Made in California. Revelatory Dennis tracks n' all. I'm a bad Smiley Smiler. Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: Mooger Fooger on September 10, 2013, 11:51:42 AM I'm a BB fan first and foremost, but the first album I really connected with was The Point!. I grew up with Nilsson and went through my teens with the BBs. They win by a very very small margin as being my favourite artist. MY wife loves Nilsson, so Im happy.
Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: hypehat on September 10, 2013, 04:29:08 PM This set is really great btw, in terms of the music we are presented with. They really nailed it. Everything sounds amazing. And everything I want is here, that is in the sets remit - as a fan, I'd love other people to hear his vocal on Zip A Dee Doo Dah from the Hal Wilner Disney record, for example, as it's his last great vocal performance. But this isn't that set.
I do now have so much obscure Nilsson in great quality that I could die. I cannot complain. This set is the greatest, in it's own modest way. Harry Nilsson forever. Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: Mooger Fooger on September 11, 2013, 06:04:19 AM The thing with this set that really floored me was the quality of the remastering. I was hearing stuff on Schmilsson that I hadn't heard before. Or on Knilsson I was amazed by the clarity. The bonus recordings are awesome as well. This year was a bonus year for stuff I like, MiC, RCA Nilsson, and Flash Harry. Along with the Nilsson biography and the Abba book which I got yesterday, along with Carnival of Sound by Jan and Dean. Music all the way for me now.
Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: Amanda Hart on November 06, 2013, 10:38:15 AM Don't know if you guys saw this: http://www.legacyrecordings.com/page/record-store-day/
A numbered, limited edition 180-gram vinyl release of 12 of the non-album tracks from the box. Listening to the box I had the thought that they could make one really killer rarities disc from everything scattered throughout. No track list posted, but I really hope Postcard and Walk Right Back make it, I could listen to those all day. Also of interest to me, is the Roy Orbison box set listed below. I already have original issues of the first three albums, but I'm planning on getting this box to support the campaign for more re-issues. This is stuff that should be available. Title: Re: Harry Nilsson: The RCA Albums Collection (17 CDs!!!) Post by: feelsflow on December 21, 2013, 12:50:40 PM I just got mine on 19 December. Going to crack it open for tonight's listening party. Starting with the first two rarities discs, then...we'll discuss. Maybe Sandman. Love side one of that. I have this stuff on vinyl, but the rarities pulled me in.
After I've had time to hear a bunch of it, will come back to review. So Big, so much to look forward to. Last week-end we watched the doc. again, had that for awhile. Can't understand why they cut the songs, he was a great live performer - many of those clips I'd never seen before. Who said he didn't do live? He just didn't do it often enough. Post by: Menace Wilson on January 07, 2014, 02:02:28 PM I already have most of Nillson's albums on CD, but everything I've heard about this set makes me feel like I should take the plunge. And I haven't even bought the friggin' MIC set yet!

I'm excited to finally dig into all this Harry I still haven't listened to yet. God bless Harry Nilsson. |
