Title: Re: Sgt Peppers Movie.. Post by: Jonas on April 25, 2006, 01:26:14 PM it has its moments...but im really surprised the beatles let this goto print.
Title: Re: Sgt Peppers Movie.. Post by: Fire Wind on April 25, 2006, 01:38:20 PM Never seen this. Has it ever been in print on video?
Title: Re: Sgt Peppers Movie.. Post by: Roger Ryan on April 25, 2006, 01:46:32 PM I'm even more surprised that George Martin would agree to produce the soundtrack and then do such a mediocre job (to cut him some slack, he had to reproduce some of the Beatles' most complicated technical acheivements in a relatively short time frame). I really wanted to like the movie when it came out since I had in my mind a wonderfully surreal "music video" for the "Pepper" album, but the completely pedestrian direction and non-performances by almost everyone sunk it.
Regarding that finale: considering they were trying to duplicate the album cover, you would have hoped that they would have found some higher profile celebrities than Sha Na Na, Paul Williams, et al. dan223: The film is available on DVD; Amazon is selling it new for $7.99 which is a little steep given it's quality! Title: Re: Sgt Peppers Movie.. Post by: Dancing Bear on April 25, 2006, 02:02:10 PM The Beatles had no veto power, and George Martin made it for the money AND the notion that if somebody else screwed up he would hate it and wouldn't cash in the payment anyway.
In the end Martin just produced those lazy versions which barely copied the original recordings. When Earth, Wind and Fire sent their hit version of Got to Get You into My Life, he wondered if he should have been more creative. There was an interesting article in Mojo about the movie. Title: Re: Sgt Peppers Movie.. Post by: Fire Wind on April 25, 2006, 02:06:36 PM Ah, yes I see it. Thank you. Doesn't seem available in the UK though. Doesn't sound worth the pursuing either.
Title: Re: Sgt Peppers Movie.. Post by: I. Spaceman on April 25, 2006, 02:19:54 PM Underrated camp gem.
Title: Re: Sgt Peppers Movie.. Post by: Mark Kidd on April 25, 2006, 05:05:09 PM I think it's a pretty great movie. I think it's a well-realized satire of the music industry which a lot of people seem to take at face value.

My absolute favorite Beatle cover ever. Better than the original, me thinks. Title: Re: Sgt Peppers Movie.. Post by: JScott on April 25, 2006, 09:35:51 PM Hmmmmm, now I'm not so sure. Side by side I think I like Paulie better. EW&F has fun with it though.
