Now that we have the Live CD set and the Made in California box set on the way I'm assuming that last years Capitol record contract is fulfilled? I know this was discussed last year. The new studio album and, what was it, one or two more releases?

How about promotion? I would assume that Capitol would ask all five Beach Boys to promote the new Live set and Made in California box set? Maybe we'll see all five back on QVC in the fall?

What do you think?

Um, well, If I'm Capitol Records and I'm releasing new material for a band I might be inclined to think that helping promote the new releases will help sales.

I never said that it was going to happen. Just a thought.

Bands almost never go on tour to promote large archival releases like box sets, because they're aimed at the kind of people who will shell out a hundred quid or more, and so they don't need much in the way of promotion. Bands essentially *never* tour to promote back-catalogue releases like that
As for the live album -- bands rarely tour to promote those, either, and we *know* the Beach Boys aren't doing so for this one, because it comes out next month and we know all the tour dates for Mike & Bruce (apart from a three-week gap in late June/early July) right through to September -- which is also, you will note, *after* the box set comes out.

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to imagine there will be any more five-man Beach Boys shows this year, and very little reason to imagine there will ever be any more.

I agree with Andrew, but thought I'd mention that Brian Wilson himself went out to promote his Live At The Roxy album. Did Letterman's show as well as a memorable appearance on Conan, where he performed "Heroes & Villains" (which wasn't even on the live album!).

So anything's possible.

The difference there was that Brian's live album was one he put out himself, through his own website -- and at a time when internet access was far less universal than it is today -- he needed every bit of publicity he could get for that. This live album doesn't -- right now it's sat at number 57 in Music on Amazon (and in the top forty for rock) despite being on pre-order with more than a month to go before the release.
Brian also hadn't split up with himself between recording and releasing the Roxy CD.

People are so desperate for another reunion tour they're trying desperately to find "evidence" that one's happening where none exists. That kind of self-delusion isn't healthy, and it's warping the discussions on this board, all of which seem to be either people spinning elaborate fantasies about an album and tour for which there is no evidence, or the anguished screams of those who have just realised that they're *not* getting their album and tour and have decided Mike is evil.

It looks like the people at Capitol Records are delusional or in denial because they are promoting the Beach Boys tour on their official website and are using a BB50 photograph featuring all five. I'm not sayin, I'm just sayin'.  >:D

I've given up hope for a new tour with the five and a new studio album. I'm just thrilled about the box and live set. It's all about promotion and sales.

Yes, and they are using that photo for *shows which we know for a fact are Mike & Bruce shows*.

Back in 1993, when the Beach Boys were still together, they toured behind the GV box set for a series of small-venue concerts, with extended playlists. One of the best BB shows I've ever seen was the '93 one in Atlanta.

As for Capitol's official BB website, I'd like to see them give the BAD dates equal treatment with M&B's dates.

Smile Sessions received quite a large promotional push withe the webisodes and all but that was a special case.

Yep, and that kind of thing is entirely possible again. It's just the whole "band reuniting and playing QVC again and touring again and everything being just like it was" thing that isn't going to happen.

I doubt it will happen, there was zero promotion for "Isn't It Time" Single Version.

For the sake of consistency, shouldn't the Bruce and Mike shows be call "BM" dates?

I think they also had a concert in front of the Capitol tower, including a beach!

It will be curious to see whether Mike and Bruce change the setlist to add more rarities when the box set comes out. The groups did in 1993 (for a while) and M&B did again when TWOTS came out.

I doubt they will right then -- they have a run of casino and county fair gigs booked, where they never vary from a very conservative setlist -- but they often play theatre shows in the autumn and winter, so we may well see them doing some interesting sets from late September onwards.

Correct me if I'm wrong but as Mike has bought the license to be called The Beach Boys, Capitol can show 'The Beach Boys' tour dates. The fact that they showing a C50 photo is obviously misleading

Unless BAD have a Capitol contract, they won't appear.

Again, maybe this shows that they are still under some sort of contract with Capitol.

You are wrong, thus I shall correct you: Mike didn't buy the license to tour as The BB... he was awarded it by democratic vote involving all the executive members of BRI.

I'm sure all 5 BB's will promote the live cd and MIC - but not together. Brian will make the usual rounds with the music magazines, and give his memories of songs featured on the sets like "that song had a spiritual feel" and "that tune has merit"; Mike and Bruce will have a guy selling copies of the live disc out of the back of a station wagon after their shows.

Yup, but we have to remember that the Smile Sessions also wasn't promoted by the guys together (I doubt they were sitting at one table together for the webisodes) but more or less just by Brian. So, it really isn't necessarily for them to do it together.
