Perfect!
My wife's not a fan and she's away the week the box set comes out!

Very well spotted. At last something fresh for us to fall out over and a date on which Phil's banishment can end!

I'm so happy I'm going to run naked round the village tonight handing CD copies of WIBNTLA to old ladies.

'Bout friggin' time.  ;D
As excited as I am to finally see some actual movement on the newsfront with this thing, yeah, what he said.  Jeesh!

Let's hope some of this extra time has gone into really polishing up thg box set's contents and offering us a truly special release.  I know I'd just about kill to hear the rest of the Summer's Gone / My Life suite (and then probably die a happy fan), and if it's not going to fature as the centerpiece of a new Beach Boys album, then it sure would mean an awful lot to see the rest of the suite finished and featured on Made in California

And hey, more great news - the live album is right around the corner!  One for the start of the next endless summer, and one for the end (can there be an end to and endless summer?).  Between these and the end-of-year dvd project, we should be in for a real treat this year.

Oh, and please, any folks at BRI who may be reading - please make certain one of the performances of "Summer's Gone" winds up on the live album.

Excellent!

Which means that after the soon-to-be haggling over the artwork, disagreements and changes to the liner notes, arguments over alleged revisionist history, and endless tweaking to the final track line-up, we'll see the box just in time for my 50th birthday.........in March 2015!

JUST KIDDING! :)

(Very excited about this)

Told you all! Two weeks after my birthday!

When, Billy?  The Professor is 8/11.  Automatic b-day present ratio, as if we needed one.  I can only hope that BB 2012, the great 5-man reunion band, is represented on MIC; I am sure there are gems in the can that did not make Radio. Some of the arcana that you all discuss appeals to me, but I know nothing of those rarities, so I am hoping for "new music," especially since there is no new BB album

Made In California.. Now that would have been a good title for the most recent new album. Instead of the cheesy 8 syllable having nothing to do with the 50th anniversary reunion one they chose...TWGMTR. Although my choice would have been 'Tales From Hawthorne'.

Brother Leo--I knew I liked cha!

The BB have a boxed set coming out in summer and a live 50th-anniversary double album coming out in a few weeks, and they are not going to get together to promote those as a unified band, and they are not going to cut a new album.  They could have turned all the good will into even greater glory; it was there for them--another appearance on Fallon, which will be The tonite show, some stadium gigs, Hollywood bowl again--all and every corner of the world--China for the first time (M and B are going alone).

What could have been if only Mike and Brian sat down and said "let's write some beautiful songs about all this--all we have gone through and make them as good as Kiss em baby and Warmth of the Sun.. . . . . ."

I said I was done with this, but I have failed. I still do not see how they can accept final disunity.

"Mark me, Hal."

First, thanks for the info, made my day.

Second, for what it's worth: my retailer put the (now gone) pre-order price point at € 102.99. That was for the then-announced Sept 13 release, IIRC.

So I can say nothing about the validity of this obsolete announcement, other than that it seemed to be fairly reasonable.

2 CDs, presumably. Good performances gathered from multiple shows.

They only played it two times and both times it was far from perfect, performance wise.
I'm guessing it won't be on the cd.

Yeah, you can either have "no messing with the sound" or Summer's Gone, but you won't get both. Brian messed up his lead quite badly both nights.

Double CD. We don't know anything past that, though given CD lengths we can presume it will be at least as long as the shorter shows from the tour, but that it won't be as long as the longest.

Good enough to sound good on the night, but nowhere near the quality of performance people would expect from a major label CD.

POSSIBLY they could comp together a track taking elements from both performances, but at that point it's so far from being "live" that one would question the point.

I'm not sure they could even do that as Brian seemed to have problems with the verses on both nights as he couldn't quite remember the words or when to sing them.

I thought Brian was lipsyncing it at Wembley, he sounded just like the record! Instrumentation could have been better thought out, probably the rare instance where Cowsill didn't quite serve the song with his martial beat.

But sh*t yeah, MIC! Am also really interested in the live album, depending on who's mixing. Linett FTW. If it's an album like that Isn't It Time EP, I might fold.

I was going to go back and try to find out in The Smile Sessions Boxset! thread, but then I saw it's 380 pages long :o - forgot how epic that thread was.

If memory serves it was about a month (or two?) before release. I remember trying my hardest for a while to keep away from the audio samples on Amazon.

You wouldn't want something like a more obscure song like "California Saga" or "Our Prayer" to take the spot instead of "Forever?" I mean, we have a limited amount of space on this 2 disc set..why waste it on a song we've all heard countless times and that includes a lead vocal that we already have?

Title: Re: MIC(!) & Live album get release dates

I will happily eat my smelliest pair of socks if Brian Douglas Wilson was lipsynching Sunner's Gone at Wembley. I was there and I have a recording.

2CDs could be anything from "it is a bit much for one CD" (90 minutes) to two cram packed full discs (160 minutes).

My guess is it's gonna run to over two hours which means the vast majority of the material delivered can be included. I expect something culled from multiple performances to give the best performances of each song - as is normal with live albums and has been for decades. No issues there.

I'd love a 3LP release but I am guessing this is a pipe dream. Still, I am hopeful that the 2CD set will contain more material than the ridiculous DVD release.

Yes, he did have some issues both times, but every number on these cd's will be sweetened, guaranteed.  It's done by virtually every act when they put out an official live release, and, well, we know that the Beach Boys have a historty of doing it themselves.

The band's perfomances of the number were fine and not every not Brian sang was pitch-y, or anything.  My point is that there's no reason the meat of either of the performances of "Summer's Gone" couldn't be included, along with a bit of in-studio help (which again, we are virtually assured has been done on whichever tracks are included) to provide a perfectly workable 'live' version of the song.

Exactly, they WILL polish up some of these live tracks and fix what needs to be fixed.  That could mean re-recording parts, editing, and/or unfortunately auto-tune.  So Summer's Gone could definitely make the cut if they really wanted it on there.  And if there are any decent leftover tracks that don't fit on the live album, they could be added as bonus cuts to Made In California itself or part of a CD single.  I have to say that I wasn't really that interested in a live album of the tour, but after hearing the live recording from Japan, I was very impressed and I'll buy this new one.

That's entirely possible -- I was just pointing out that people have been saying they want no sweetening, and it's got to be one or the other.
Personally, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of an undoctored release, though -- partly because, of course, the band aren't working together any more, and partly because with 75 shows to choose from if there's really not a single performance of each song that's usable than something's very, very wrong. That's not to say it *will* be undoctored, of course, but the things that applied to, say, the Knebworth show don't apply here.

The truth is, I was really trying to reply to both you and STE at once, so I tried to give my post a more general tone.  In fact, Ram4 really put it better than I did when he said "Summer's Gone could definitely make the cut if they really wanted it on there."  That's really all I was trying to say.

And yes, you're absolutely right, it would have to be one or the other.  That said, while I know a lot of folks are wishing for a warts'n'all type of release, I think we know, deep in our heart-of-hearts, that it's probably not very likely.  And I want to make it clear that this isn't meant as a dig against the band in any way.  It's just how things are generally done these days and I think the best we can realistically hope for is tasteful, organic-sounding 'fixes,' whenever they appear.  Then again, I don't have any inside knowledge here, or anything.  I could certainly be totally off-base in my presumptions here.

You make a very good point about the plethora of material the group has to choose from, though.  As far as the guys not working together now?  I don't know.  I mean, periodically, we've seen photos of Brian, at least, seemingly at work in the studio, virtually since the week the tour wrapped.  Was it for 'sweetening' live tracks?  Finishing up some of those unheard suite numbers for Made in California?  Maybe demos for a proper follow-up to TWGMTR (or a new BW album)?  Have any other of the guys been in the studio in the past months?  Interesting questions, at least (even if I don't have any answers).

What I do know is that I'm sure excited that we're getting this live album, with MIC looming in the not so distant future, too.  :)

Now we're going to have the inane incessant posts of "I can't wait until August", probably by the same ones who filled threads on the board months before the Smile box came out.

Be watching for it.  The posts will have kind of a whiny tone to it.

And you're whining now there will be inane incessant posts?  :p

Yep. Preparing myself for the onslaught of posts pining away for MIC until August. At least a couple of times a week you'll see it. Same people over and over. People with nothing else in the world to do but post that. Annoying as hell.

Personally, I'm planning on getting more annoyed at the self-referential meta-commentary posts that implicitly attack themselves.

Are you referring to my posts by chance, Mr. Hickey?

...plus we're guaranteed to see one or two new threads created JUST to say "I can't wait till August...it's driving me crazy! Agh!!" or something close to that.

Exactly. Makes you think that some people should get a life. When it comes, it comes, you know? Pining away on a message board ain't gonna expedite its release!

You are annoying as hell, take a chill pill man, you are whining over things that haven't happened with a tone of schizophrenia as well.

Oh what a shame. People being genuinely excited for something. It's a sick world.

Actually you're the number one 'piner' that I had in mind, Shady! Funny you should respond to this! I see you've already been "excited" here for a couple of months now. I'm excited too, but I have patience, because there's absoulutely NOTHING I can do about it before August. It's out of my control, ya know?  :o

Hey, even people with four posts don't like you Mikie, that says something, ya know.

As for being excited, well I can't really help that, it's an emotion that comes with happiness, you wouldn't know too much about that, sadly.

Shady, in keeping with your constructive, informative posting tradition, go back to dog-piling on Phil Cohen with the rest of them. You're real good at that.

Why do you think i want to fight/argue with you? You are being annoying as hell but i'm telling it so you at least think about the things you are saying and how pathetic you look, over 3500 posts and you are still a dick, maybe you should relax and stop whining so much.

We've just had the best Beach Boys news in a year and people are attacking each other over it?

We've just had the best Beach Boys news in a year and people are attacking each other over it?

But isn't that the main problem? With us picky collector types (a.k.a. unpleasable hoarding obsessive-compulsive disorder patients also spiced with a generous spoonful of Asperger's)?

It is good that DSM-V is on the horizon, though.

I will happily eat my smelliest pair of socks if Brian Douglas Wilson was lipsynching Sunner's Gone at Wembley. I was there and I have a recording.

As was I, but I was just utterly gobsmacked by the songs sudden appearance and how good he sounded - just wonderful. I had a similar reaction at the Gershwin gig I saw, it's so good to see Brian 'on'.

Wasn't insinuating he was lipsyncing, just marvelling at the quality of the performance!

I dunno, i think this performance is releasable.

It might not be perfect, but edit away the times where he starts a line to early and the final product is definetly worth having!
