So, Brian's off conducting another session for Smile on my stereo. My girlfriend chimes in: "Why did they do this? Just to show what a bossypants he (Brian) was?"

"Well, no. They're showing how he came up with the songs. And these were hired studio musicians, not his band. They were doing a job and he was basically their boss."

Girlfriend: "Wait, so the Beach Boys didn't play the songs?"

"No. Brian Wilson didn't think they were good enough. He needed people that could play all kinds of instruments. The Beach Boys still did all the singing, though."

Girlfriend: "That's terrible! 'Hey guys, you're not good enough to play on any of these songs, but you can sing on it, I guess.'"

"Now that you mention it, it was a little unfair. Plus, they were off on the road playing the music live while Brian just got to stay at home all day and come up with stuff like this."

Girlfriend: "That sounds like it could get really aggravating."

"I guess you're right."

And suddenly, I transformed into Mike Love and understood all.

I just wait until my girlfriend is asleep, and then put some headphones on her and play the box set really softly. She wakes up liking them more. You should try it.

I think she appreciates it musically, but I don't think she likes it.  She likes heroes and villians,and good vibrations.  But at least she doesn't care that I listen almost every day..so I'll take it

My wife doesn't like that there are so many parts to each song. You know three "parts" to Cabinsessence, Three parts to Surf;'s up, etc... she thinks it makes them sound like several songs instead of one song... frustrating

I scared several girlfriends away with Kinks/Dave Davies albums. Haven't had the same results with BB's music.

My girlfriend heard H&V in the car one night and said it reminded her of me! Go figure!

My wife's favorite Beach Boys song is the cantina version of "Heroes And Villains" and she prefers it with the original intro (now used as part of "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow").  She also especially adores "Wonderful" and knows exactly why Smile is a big deal.  Yep.  Lucky.   :)

My wife admits to liking Heroes and Villains and she loves Good Vibrations, and she likes all the early surf and car songs. The one BB song she thinks is too weird is Honkin Down the Highway although she says it has a good beat. And some of the stuff from Adult/Child that I played she said sounded like they were drunk or out of tune.

My Jan & Dean listening habit she can't understand, though.

The last thing I would play for someone not a serious fan of the BB's would be Adult Child or Love You.

Another SMiLE box. I have it on good authority that he plays the CDs on a old-style turntable. He's a bit.... um.... how shall I say... um...........

My old lady listens to the Box more than me, and with keener ears as she isn't as 'jaded' as me, or whatever I am after having heard this stuff for 25 years or so. She's also the first person I knew who pointed out that Marylin sings on Busy Doin Nothin. But she doesn't get my Jan & Dean thing either...

That's cos the box doesn't keep giving her a hard time.

My ex couldn't see Smile beyond being a set of unfinished fragments, and she mockingly likened it to one of those annoying made for discos mega-mixes where they only play little bits of several songs. I gave up trying to explain after a while and stopped listening to it when she was home.

For a brief moment I read: '...stopped listening to her when she was at home.'

Yeah, I didn't play it to her, I was just listening to it and she overheard it.

My wife loves them and will listen to anything Jan and/or Dean (even Jan & Arnie) from Jennie Lee to Yellow Balloon.
She tells me be sure to "bring the boys" when we go for ride into town.

She doesn't even flinch at "Schlok Rod"

Love You is what solidified my wife being a fan when I first started getting her into the group.

I don't recall her exact words but Mrs. O'Leary's Cow totally creeped out my wife.  :lol I think she's kind of creeped out by BW in general, although she likes her vintage Beach Boys as much as the next 50-something.

I was making furniture whilst listening to the Smiley Smile sessions on Sunday. My girlfriend came into the room for ten or so minutes for a chat whilst i slaved away putting together her new bedside cabinet. After a while she went silent and didn't say anything for several minutes whilst the Beach Boys were heard rehearsing the fade to Wind Chimes. Eventually she said, ''Whatare you listening too?'' I said, ''The Beach Boys of course'' [I was surprised she felt the need to even ask]. Then she went, with a voice representing genuine wonder/bafflement, ''It's so weird. It doesn't sound like anything else''. ''Exactly'', i replied, ''that's what makes them so great''. She didn't seem overly convinced. ''It's just so odd''.

Beach Boys stuff she has liked however... A Day In The Life Of A Tree (''Wow, who is that? What a lovely song''), L.A. Light Album (funnily enough my ex really loved this album too, in particular Baby Blue) and Dennis' Pacific Ocean Blue.

I don't remember my ex ever uttering an opinion about SMiLE, but she once gave me real wind chimes for christmas. One with smooching elks. :-D

I always thought Carnival Of Sound is pretty much the most accessible J&D 'record' (Save For A Rainy Day too), outside of a few tracks (Only A Boy can get to f***), but you could play anyone who digs the 60's pop stuff Girl You're Blowing My Mind or Hawaii and they would see the merits. I can't get into their 'real' records at all! Too many crap jokes and dumb songs.

I realise this isn't a popular view at all round these parts.  ;D

I will never be able to listen to 'Workshop' again with innocent ears...

Some friends and I were driving over an old rickety bridge in deep backwoods Virginia late late one night. My friend stopped the car in the middle of the bridge and turned the car off. It was pitch black out and there was complete silence except for the sound of branches rustling and the boards of the bridge creaking....a really creepy experience. Then I put on 'Fall Breaks and Back to Winter' over the car stereo - I was forced to turn it off within seconds. Someone yelled "What the hell is that?!?"

"The Beach Boys of course!" I replied.

I'm convinced that the world's sum of girifriends appreciation of the Smile stuff falls down like this

1% of the chicks that listen to it like it.  Some of those chicks are on this board.
20% of the chicks that hear it, don't like it, and don't mind telling you it's crap.
79% of the chicks that hear it, try to like it because they're kind hearted and soft like women are apt to be, and are trying to support their boyfriend's taste in music.

But, 100 times out of 100, she asks for "Who Ran The Iron Horse" to either be turned down or switched off.

In the world of high-end HiFi gear, there is an acronym: WAF. It is sort of a running gag, but also sometimes about serious matters. What if a guy has found the stereo set up of a lifetime, for instance including this Baasner turntable (which is real, believe me!):

Okay I am no stranger to WAF.  ;)

You mentioned starting a poll, which is funny but like you also said "WAF" is just a running joke with no established standards...for instance I could say that turntable has a WAF of "0" which would carry roughly the meaning that it is intolerable but for the poll shouldn't the numerical value also have a label -- like "0" equals "Get that out of the house or I'll leave"

Or how about this:  "4" Either you turn that down or I am inviting my mother to spend the weekend here.
