The company I work for put on our yearly trade show yesterday at a large Indian casino in downtown Milwaukee.  I decided to stroll through the casino floor on my way out as I enjoy the sensory overload that is a busy casino.  Above the bells and whistles and the general symphony of sounds...I suddenly hear: "...carriage across the fog two step to lamp lights cellar tune..."  I had to pause for a second to realize that the Beach Boys' version of "Surf's Up" was being played on the casino's music system!  I found it an odd song to hear in that situation...but I loved it (obviously).  I stopped walking so I could listen to the rest of the song!  They had been playing an "oldies" Muzak station throughout the day...but you still don't expect to hear a song like that...despite being one of the most beautiful compositions of the pop era.   It made my day!

I have heard that song at Starbucks as well. But at Starbucks, it is not as surprising I guess.

 I think it's uncommon to hear it anywhere, but I'm curious as to why it's less so at Starbucks?

Starbuck = Dirk Benedict who also played Face in the A-Team. In episode #96 of The A-Team they go to California to help this guy who runs a Surf shop called "Surfs Up"

I don't think it's that unusual. I've heard other obscure Beach Boys tracks on Musak in stores, including both instrumentals off of "Pet Sounds" and as well as the 71 LP version of "Surf's Up." I've heard Brian Wilson solo tracks from "Imagination" and "Lucky Old Sun." Whoever programs for Musak Corp. obviously has a lot of respect for BW and the Beach Boys. There are several different channels of Musak available and it's up to the store or business to choose which one or ones they want to hear. Some of them are more arcane than others.

That's probably my most unexpected experience with a less well-known Beach Boys song.

I attended mass the other week and, as the sacraments were being handed around, the priest and choir broke into a truly awesome harmonic version of "Hey Little Tomboy", pervy version!  Almost choked on my catechism!



Okay, I made that up.

Sail On Sailor has been part of the Muzak in my office for the past 6 - 8 month.  They don't have a large selection of songs, so I usually hear it at least once per day.  Before that, Imagination was part of the Muzak loop for many years.

I work in a call center, and twenty or so years ago, I'd hear  "true Muzak"/"Hollywood Strings"-style instrumental renditions of Warmth Of The Sun, Surf's Up, and Sail On Sailor.   I occassionally hear the original versions of Sail On Sailor and Imagination in the hallways, to this day.

Local station by me played friends the other day, was pretty suprised.  That same station played the surfs up, surf up rendition while in the work truck, my co worker hated it, but that's no Suprise coming from someone who likes pretty much garbage metal music

Just wanted to add, I didn't think it was humanly possible to hate surfs up, no wonder no one likes the guy

The reason I say that is because Starbucks seems to play a lot of indie artsy type music. Plus, yeah, they did issue a CD that included the song.

The gift store at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago was only playing Beach Boys when I was there, so naturally I spent about $1,000 on useless knickknacks!
