Interesting how much more serious matters become once Carl takes charge.

Who else is in the room? Bobby Figueroa, Steady Eddie, Jeff Foskett, Matt Jardine, and original Beach Boys Bruce Johnston, John Stamos, Carl Wilson and Al Jardine, plus someone else in the bottom left corner I can't place.

Very nice clip. Thanks to John Stamos!

Fantastic!

It looks more like Gary Griffin than Ed Carter.
Also, Mike Kowalski, not Bobby Figueroa.
I don't see Jeff Foskett, but I briefly spotted Tim Bonhomme.

I think it's Ed Carter.. and isn't that Foskett in the first couple of seconds on the couch, playing guitar?  ???

Good call… and after I'd looked uop how to spell Figueroa!  ;D

yep, I reckon that's Foskett on the couch before Carl takes over the guitar

Not Foskett. It looks like Chris Farmer playing the guitar during the Sammy Davis, Jr. impersonation.

Yap. That's the same guy who's dressed in blue in the first couple of seconds, right? But could be Gary Griffin too, I suppose... weird.  :P But I'd say it's Carter. Stamos himself could probably clear this up - somebody with a YouTube account should post a comment there.  ^-^

It's Gary Griffin, Carter was no longer with the band at that point (and also wears glasses). Foskett is not in the video, he also was no longer with the band at that time (M. Jardine had taken over for Adrian Baker, who had himself taken over for Foskett). Not sure who that is on the couch, Farmer was in the band at that time, so it could be him although it doesn't really look like him. The guy briefly visible on the left is Tim Bonhamme, who replaced Mike Meros as the band's keyboardist.  He also served as road manager on the C50 tour.

In any event, this video is the kind of stuff that is just priceless to see.

But how did Stamos record it( hand held) when he was in the videos?

That's why I added the "(had)" - he probably had a friend with him or someone else from the BBs entourage recorded it. Who knows.

No , both Tim and Mike Meros where in the Band on keys prior to the sad demise of Carl and for a couple of years after (Tim joined at the same time as Chris F, Chris replaced Ed)

OK, I can concede Bonhamme and Meros may have overlapped in the band (maybe Bonhamme replaced Billy Hinsche??). Bonhamme and Farmer indeed joined at the same time.  In any event, that is Bonhamme briefly in the video

Yeah, Bonhomme and Meros overlapped from 96 to 2001. It was John Cowsill who replaced Meros, at the same time Scott Totten replaced Phil Bardowell, just before the UK 2001 dates. I think that Hinsche and Carter left at the same time in 96, being replaced by Bonhomme and Farmer.

Also, Matt Jardine didn't replace Adrian Baker -- Matt J joined in 1989, while Foskett was still in the band. Foskett was replaced by Baker in 1991, and then Baker himself was out a year or so after that. Matt J took over Baker's falsetto parts (which Baker had taken over from Foskett), but he'd been adding harmonies and percussion for a few years by that point.

It would be interesting to know why they didn't just give Matt the falsetto parts as soon as Foskett was out -- but Foskett leaving seems to coincide with the time that Al was temporarily out of the band for 'attitude problems', so maybe they weren't sure if Matt would be staying with the band (though he did).

Yes, you are of course absolutely correct on Matt jardine.  He joined the band in 1989 as percussionist, taking over falsetto from Baker in 1993. Can't believe I missed that Bonhamme and Meros overlapped for 5 years, but I really stopped paying much attention between February 6, 1998 and the C50

This video reminds me of my VHS tape from the 80's (I think it was on Youtube too) where Carl, Al, Bruce, and maybe one more Beach Boy were practicing "Shut Down" back stage with Reggie Jackson before the show. It might have been one of those Baseball/Beach Boys shows in the 80's. Always liked that video. Anybody see it?

yeah, it was from the Endless Summer TV series.  I was actually at that concert which was Memorial Day weekend 1989 in Costa Mesa with Chicago.  Reggie came on stage during the encore.  If my memory serves it was Mike and Al singing Shut Down with Mr. October backstage (with Al having trouble on the harmony and stating, "get Brian in here")

So according to that Costa Mesa setlist on 5/27/89, Shut Down was in the middle of the main setlist, while the encore was with Chicago. Did The Boys play Shut Down again with Reggie or did he come out while they played the song in the main set? I see it was in the Endless Summer TV series.

Speaking of ball players, Ron Guidry of the Yanks performed with the Beach Boys as a drummer in a post-game concert.

That night the BB's opened, Brian came out in the middle to do SG, Country Feelins and L&M (without the BB's who left the stage. His set was embarrassingly bad, how far he has come since then)  the BB's came back to finish their  set and then Chicago came on. The encore was indeed with Chicago. Oddly, he didn't do Shut Down with them at all on stage which was in its normal slot during the car medley.  He came up on stage during the final encore (could have been either FFF or Surfin USA, I don't recall which) and picked up Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston one in each arm like sack of potatoes. My take from the video clip of him doing Shut Down backstage has always been  that he was just back there and they did it  impromptu, because Reggie is both a big BB fan and a huge car nut. But who knows?

Getting back to the video............  Always cool to hear Carl in a small room, unamplified, revealing what a truly gifted singer he was.

I thought it a little awkward with Bruce questioning Carl's guitar chord near the end though.

Why? It would be one thing if Carl wrote the song, but I feel like Bruce would be just as likely to know the chords to Forever as Carl.
