Just happen to be listening to the acapella version of it right now: "Forever".

There's so many. Be With Me, All 4 songs on Sunflower. San Miguel, Cuddle Up, Make It Good, Barbara, I've Got A Friend, Only With You, Steamboat, Carry Me Home, Baby Blue, Morning Christmas, Wild Situation, River Song, the whole damn POB album. And yes, You Are So Beautiful. Even effing Denny's Drums.

These are off the top. I know I left a few out that should be included. Celebrate The News. Fourth Of July. Just great, great, top shelf material.

Next to Brian Wilson, The Wood was hands down the best songwriter of the band. Not even a second thought.

Hey Surfer, do you know who co-wrote "Never Learn Not To Love" with Dennis?   Hint: He lives in Corcoran.

Charles Manson did the original Cease to Exist.

Everybody play nicely. We were all newbies once. Hell as a brand new fan my first ever post was in 1996 on the old Wheeler board asking if it was Bruce singing on Do you wanna dance. I had yet to hear what him or Dennis sounded like at that point and figured the vocals sounded "like I'd expect someone named Bruce to sound like". :lol

Out of the two songs listed, "Lady"..

"Lady" is a great song. Right up there with the others I listed above. Desper says he was the engineer on that. Good story about it on his thread.

Surfer, as you might know, the 2009 mix of "Lady" ("Fallin' In Love") is on the Beach Boys' compilation "Summer Love Songs". To me, the best version out there. Spring also did a great version of "Fallin' In Love". You have good taste!

Love this one too:

Couldn't have put it better myself, Mikie. Right on all counts.

Incidentally, I've got to say it was pretty unpleasant to read some of the smug, sarcastic comments in response to Surfer's perfectly innocent, unoffensive post. What the hell kind of justification is there for talking at/about him like that? We should be welcoming new people to the site, not trying to patronise and belittle them. The sensible thing to do would've been to point out to Surfer that his question would've maybe been better posted in the 'Questions that don't warrant an entire thread' post - or better yet, you could've just answered his question and left him to get a feel of the site for himself. This constant smirking smugness is really unjustified, folks. No one here is any better than anyone else - we're all a bunch of geeks obsessing over a fifty year old music group!

Anyway Surfer, in answer to your post: I think Never Learn... is an amazing production from Dennis, but Lady is the better song - one of my favourite songs in the bands entire catalogue in fact... I prefer the original version rather than the updated remix however.

Even if you had listed all released DW songs, I'd still choose Lady. What a great string arrangement, what intricate vocals!

Lady is good as well, but that orchestra lets the song a bit down.

As I said, the orchestra is the greatest thing to me on that track next to the vocals! :-D

why the drum machines in that period? Til I Die with drum machine, wth?

Because they sound extremely cool?

Also, that was a fairly new technology at the time. It probably did sound cool to them at the time, and to some, still. I personally don't care for the drum machine effect as used on some of the tracks in the Landlocked period, but you have to chalk it up to further experimentation with sounds and new things - which was and is extremely healthy for a band creating new music.

(I think the drum machine as used on "Til I Die" is very effective, though.)

Why Johnston was changed his real name - i.e. Benjamin - to "Bruce" is beyond me.

Short and simple answer is, he didn't. His adoptive parents did.

"Lady" is a great song, maybe Top 5 Dennis songs, easily Top 10. I love every cover version I've heard, but one special version/arrangement was The Beach Boys' live version on The Mike Douglas Show (don't remember the year), with Carl's haunting guitar strumming.

You kidding? The drum machine works amazingly well on Lady. That little intro (on the original version) is great! Then Dennis's lovely vocal begins, and then: pow! The whole orchestration kicks in. To me, it's a perfect song!

(A review of Lady in Mojo magazine a few years ago said: ''Lady' manages a level of emotional vulnerability not even Brian could achieve''.)

The combo of drum machine and soaring strings is so ridiculously cool, that apparently it sails right over the heads of many.

:'(  What is this ?  I am offended  :(

Pay them no mind. They are a bunch of heels. But I will say that I had to laugh at the comment about David Spades comedy career. :)

It is hard to pick between those two songs. Right now, I would say Lady because it is newer to me.

Yes, that's why I said "was changed", meaning that his unreal folks did it.

Oh, I just assumed - reasonably, given the available evidence - that your grammatical skills were somewhat limited.
