I think Brian sounds 1000% better on this album than he did on Love You.

Actually, making this list, I realized I don't dislike MIU as much as I thought I did.  Maybe it's time to pull it out for another listen...

Is it me or does this album - even the "godd" songs just feel like junk cobbled together and so not up to their usual standards? This period, 15BO, MIU, KTSA, 85 is just a rough period for them....

No, it's definitely just you. This is widely considered the band's classic period and the apex of their recording career. Get off this forum and don't come back!

Certainly not a great work of art, but in all honesty not an unpleasant listen either. I don't dislike it.

1. She's Got Rhythm - Too bad that Brian's falsetto sounds so bad, because in it's basics this is a very good rock 'n' roll song.
2. Sweet Sunday Kinda Love - Nice. Carl sounds so cool and laid back. From 2:00 on it gets really beautiful with the strings and group vocals.
3. Winds of Change - Very cheesy, but I happen to like cheese. I'm sure this song would've gotten a lot more credit if Brian would've written it.
4. Kona Coast - Although some of them may be recycled, this song has some good hooks. Not bad at all.
5. Matchpoint of Our Love - This somehow reminds me of 'Busy Doin' Nothin''. Sure it's not as great, but the mood is pretty much the same.
6. Come Go With Me - Another oldies cover that nobody really needs, but it does sound cool enough.
7. My Diane - Not a great song, but it's hard to dislike a heartfelt Dennis Wilson vocal.
8. Wontcha Come Out Tonight - Not great, not too bad either.
9. Belles of Paris - Not a good song by any means. But because it's so relaxed and because Paris just might be the greatest city in the world, I can't hate it.
10. Peggy Sue - Falls in the same category as Rock And Roll Music: a dreadful, overproduced cover of a rock 'n' roll classic without even the slightest bit of the energy of the original version.
11. Pitter Patter - Convincing vocals, but probably one of the most boring composition the group ever recorded. Why anyone decided that this song was worth being recorded is beyond me.
12. Hey Little Tomboy - Creepy, sexist, uninspired and not sung very well. No, thanks.

I think I would like "Match Point..." if it had less overextended tennis images. "My Diane" rules though, that's a stone jam.

A step down from Love You, but still enjoyable. This album is more "Brian" than it is given credit for. Re-sequence it and close the album with "Our Team" and it goes up a grade.

Looking at the list, my overall feeling hasn't changed much in 35 years. There isn't a classic, timeless song on here, but the songs don't scrape the bottom of the barrel either.

I'c always feel the album is a bit underrated. For the most part Brian sounds a lot better. Not enough Carl, but during this time period his vocals kind of sucked, to be honest. Biggest complaint for me is the album's production is overdone, and the mix is too busy. I love the drum sound on it, but the bass is weak and some of the backups are awful.  I also hate how retro the sound is. Perhaps I don't like the album as much as I thought. I like the songs for the most part. but the production is terrible.

12. Winds of Change- the most artistic song on the album, and the one that sounds like it was intended to be a creative statement. That said...it blows furry goat chunks. The song is rather boring. Al sounds like Kermit the Frog (I keep thinking of Kermit singing about New York City and BAM...gets hit by the taxi) Al's vocals are 'pleasant' but boring, and the whole thing ends up being rather pretentious. This is in my bottom third of Beach Boys' songs.
11. She's Got Rhythm- Brian's vocal on this is putrid at parts, and I hate the backup vocals on this.
10. Peggy Sue- Competent, but enough damn covers. When Brian does it, there was still some quirkiness that made it interesting. Al? Not so much...
9. Sweet Sunday Kinda Love- Carl's voice sounds 'nice' (although he still has that Peter Cetera on 'ludes thing going on, he at least sounds awake unlike on The Night Was So Young)
8. Come Go With Me- The actual version, not the 15 BO outtake on an earlier CD release. That one's dire.
7. Belles of Paris- The strings make me want to claw my eyes out with a wine corkscrew, but I like Mike's vocal on this, along with the backup vocals.
6. Wontcha Come Out Tonight- I hate the opening so very much, but I rank it this high for Brian's vocal part.
5. Kona Coast- Thank God this didn't come out with Christmas lyrics, as the 'Melekilikimaka is Merry Christmas in Hawaii talk-a' just may be the worst lyric ever written.
4. Hey Little Tomboy- Yes...I actually like this song. I actually miss the Beavis & Butthead-style part. Tacky, yes, but rather funny.
3. Pitter Patter- I happen to love this song, although many don't. Good vocal arrangement. Probably the best production on the album.
2. Matchpoint of our Love- Love Brian's vocal on this. Everybody hates the lyrics it seems, but I don't really care about lyrics as long as the vocals are good. By this point, the damage done to Brian's voice was permanent, but it's nice to hear him to sing in his early 70s-style one last time. I actually think this should have been the single from the album.
1. My Diane- One of my favorite Beach Boy songs ever, although I prefer the unreleased 'unsweetened' version. This also sounds like it is slightly sped-up.

I agree with SJS... Our Team should've been on it. So should have California Feelin', for that matter. Drop the damn oldies covers and Winds of Change, and it's immediately better.

I first listened to this last November...and since it's the only BB album I regularly listen to. Of course everyone has a right to their opinion, but I think there's a lot of unnecessary criticism that gets thrown at this album. Sure, parts of it obviously suck: you can tell they half-assed some takes, but overall I find it to be a well made album. Yes, the production is dry, but a lot of work went into the vocals and instrumental tracks. This album is a part of Beach Boys history that I'd guarantee we're all glad to have (I don't think anyone would actually wish it never existed, because there are some gems on here).

1. Pitter Patter - Those harmonies are great, and that clean electric guitar during the outro flows so nicely.
2. My Diane - instant BB classic
3. She's Got Rhythm - It's like a pop tune that could easily fit on Love You.
4. Come Go With Me - the guys sound so good here! Al's voice on this album is incredible.
5. Matchpoint of our Love - that backing track really is good.
6. Hey Little Tomboy - the bridge is hypnotic......and creepy.
7. Kona Coast -
8. Belles of Paris - Mike's vocals are pretty lousy, but I love the chorus.
9. Sweet Sunday Kind Of Love
10. Wontcha Come Out Tonight - this one should be higher on the list, but as someone said above: the intro is rather lousy. Still a great song though!

12. Winds of Change - would've been a great closer had they put a little more work into the coda.

I put off buying this album for YEARS because I heard it was so dreadful. But I find it quite charming. I'm glad to see there are people on this board that share my opinion ;D

I would honestly be perfectly content if every studio album after Love You didn't exist.

I'd be sad, as there's tracks on every album after that I like. EVERY album.

On the whole, M.I.U. is a pretty sorry album with tracks ranging from bad to mediocre, but it has two decent and one outstanding tracks that distinguish it from the likes of Keepin' the Summer Alive or Summer in Paradise.  They are as follows:

1.) My Diane--A fantastic song that ranks with the best of Love You.  The lyrics are purely expositional, by which I mean they are of no interest in and of themselves beyond that they clarify the source of the emotion that is beautifully projected through the melody and a terrifically hoarse lead vocal from Dennis, as well as the haunting backing vocals from Brian.  As with I'll Bet He's Nice, the emotion comes across more clearly through Dennis' hoarse voice than it would have from a cleaner sounding one.



2.) Come Go With Me--Not the most essential Beach Boys top 40 single, but it's catchy and has a good lead vocal performance from Al Jardine.
3.) She's Got Rhythm--A decent and respectable throwback type song with Brian's vocals sounding less hoarse than they had on the previous album, though it sounds underdeveloped and lacks the cathartic value that most of Love You and "My Diane" have.

The less said about the rest of the album, the better.

Exactly, even if 15 Big Ones is cutting it close.

Another big quality fall for the group. Still, a nice soft adult-contemporary sailboat-rock EP can be found amongst the dross:

The two Jardine oldies are bland and faceless. Belles Of Paris and Kona Coast are much easier to stomach in their original Christmas form. Pitter Patter is OK, I guess, but it doesn't belong on a Beach Boys album. Faceless, again. I guess I should like Match Point Of Our Love and Hey Little Tomboy, since I am such a proponent of Love You, but I really don't. Winds Of Change is so wimpy it makes Disney Girls sound like War Pigs. Awful.
They did better next time out.

... but I do like MIU in a sort of ABBA/Bee Gees kind of way.

"Match Point" is a song that puts the cart before the horse--rather than start with an experience, narrative, or emotion and use a metaphor as a means of expression, it seems like the metaphor was conceived first and some uninteresting love story was constructed for the sake of the metaphor.  It also features very neat but expressionless instrumentation and lead vocals from Brian.  Thus, I think it's fair to call "Match Point" the anti-Love You.

As for "Hey Little Tomboy": Robert Christgau praised Love You for the way that it expresses forbidden emotion (and I agree with him on this one).  "Hey Little Tomboy," on the other hand, reminds us why it might be a good thing that some emotions remain forbidden.

Nice stuff there.
I guess, the type of gimmick/concept songwriting exhibited on Match Point goes back to things like Heads You Win Tails I Lose and Finders Keepers from the early years, songs I have never liked.

Hey Little Tomboy might be one of the most unintentionally creepy songs ever written.

I see this album as good background music, but nothing you can sink your teeth into. For that I will say that I can hear it without wincing too much,  and the best of it is at least vocally solid. It's not a "GREAT" LP but I never understood the hate for it. I like the Our Team doc because what they used of Brian shows him to be fairly together for him after his twenties.

Very bland, safe album in many ways, not helped at all by its adult contemporary production.  I think there is some good to take out of it with its best tracks and it's more uninspired than it is bad.  I can't help but feel there's too much Mike and Al on this album!

I rate this album at pretty much the same level as Love You despite the albums bring poles apart musically. They both have some fantastic songs, a few medicore ones and a handfull of god awful songs. Vocal wise, it's vastly superior to the previous 2 records, even with a near total lack of Carl and Dennis participation(credit to Al for filling in the gaps).
One of the albums biggest flaws is the production on the bass and drum sound - could it be more generic sounding?
Note the B.Wilson credits on nearly every track.

1/ My Diane - The one song on the album not smothered in cheese.
2/ Sweet Sunday Love - Carl sounds half asleep but otherwise a great song.
3/ Come Go With Me - Al does a decent enough take on this.

4/ Pitter Patter- OK but crying out for a strong Dennis backbeat.
5/ Matchpoint of our Love - How many tennis metaphors can Mike cram into a song?
6/ Kona Coast- Let down by the bland backing track
7/ Won'tcha Come Out Tonight - I like Brian's leads on this.
8/ She's got Rhythm - So forgetable I forgot to include it on my initial post!!

9/ Hey Little Tomboy - I get a perverse enjoyment out of how bad this is.
10/ Belles of Paris - Mike seems to be putting a really bad track on each album by this stage.
11/ Peggy Sue - Hate the original and this is even worse.
12/ Winds of Change- MOR at it's very worse. Unlistenable, this would make even Bruce blush.

I feel nothing for the rest (enjoy the christmas versions actually ^^), although Brian certainly does have a good voice on Matchpoint. Come Go With me shoulda just been a single or a part of 15BO given that it was recorded for that album, it coulda replaced some of the less interesting TM stuff.

Had the better material from this album been mixed with the highlights of Adult/Child then this album might've had a more respectable standing.

1. My Diane - a superb, soulful and emotional masterpiece regardless of the version.


2. She's Got Rhythm - catchy pop number that sits somewhere between "guilty pleasure" and "good".

5. Sweet Sunday Kinda Love - decent song at best.


6. Come Go With Me - a take it or leave it, not ear-hurting, but neither something I'd come back for.

It's not bad, there are many far better songs in Buddy Holly's catalogue

But there aren't many better songs than anything Buddy Holly ever wrote.

That is also true. Sticking on any of my buddy Holly LP's never ceases to pleasure me.

2) Wontcha - love it, mellow vox and the arrangement builds up layers and momentum and love the outro vox

Everything else, avoid, my sympathies to the guy who drew the short straw to write the twofer liner notes (then again, he got to pen the LA cuts)

Their first record ever that kind of sucked. Anyway, there are still a couple of real highlights.

Hate, hate, hate the way Buddy Holly sings it. Agreed there are much better Buddy Holly songs.

Sometimes one song can save an album. If in order to have 'Matchpoint of our love' we need 'MIU' then its worth it.

This song has made it to my current BBs top ten. Enough said. You're a genius, Brian.

Al did a good job of producing the vocals on this album imo and vocally it is certainly superior to the previous couple of CDs. He has admitted he was working with weak, half-finished backing tracks though.

Pitter Patter and My Diane are personal favourites.

Come Go With Me is a polished cover.

Most of the other songs are inoffensive but one or two (eg. Hey Little Tomboy) should never have been released.

Time for some honesty...I've never heard the original until just now (not familiar with Buddy Holly's music, just the covers, as I don't listen to a lot of pre-1970 music aside from a few bands). Just finally heard the original, and...the MIU BB version sounds so much more dated in comparison. Definitely overproduced. Would've been interesting to hear how a Brian production would have sounded, though...

I like the way this album is pretty cohesive and uniform throughout (other than My Diane), the album plods along quite enjoyably and pleasantly.

1. Matchpoint of Our Love - This one has really grown on me over the years.
2. Come Go With Me - Solid hit single that is fun to hear in a live setting.
3. Winds of Change - Don't care what anyone says, I like it!
4. Peggy Sue - A solid remake...probably shouldn't have been the lead single, though.

5. Hey Little Tomboy - creepy in retrospect, but if you can tune out the meaning of the lyrics, it's not bad.
6. Kona Coast - A bit cheesy, and Mike's vocal a bit whiny, but still enjoyable.
7. Pitter Patter - Another whiny mid-70s Mike lead, but yes, still enjoyable.

8. Belles of Paris - This is so cheesy, I laugh almost every time I hear it.  And laughter is good in the grand scheme of things.
9. Wontcha Come Out Tonight - I enjoy the verses, but the group vocals are kinda weird, like they are imitating chickens singing - I imagine them all walking around with their hands on their hips, jutting their necks forward and backward, doing a chicken walk while singing into overhead mics.
10. She's Got Rhythm - Sorry, but Brian's screechy lead just doesn't do it for me.  It's very grating and a poor way to start the album.
11. Sweet Sunday Kinda Love - I know that some fans in the 90's said this should have been on the boxed set...I heartily disagree.  The song seems to go nowhere, and Carl's wobbly lead leaves a lot to be desired.  If he had sung it a few years later, it probably would have sounded much better.
12. My Diane - Dennis' Pacific Ocean Blue is my 2nd favorite Beach Boys solo album...I was a fan from the first listen, so I'm definitely a fan of his 70's voice!  This song, however, is pretty weak compared to everything on there, and does not fit in with the tone of MIU at all.

Like chickens! They really do sound like chickens. Now every time I hear that song I'm going to think of Ray Stevens' version of In the Mood.

12. Peggy Sue

One of the worst albums I've heard by anyone, ever. It's an incredible drop in quality from Love You. Most of the album has a particularly sterile sound that's quite unpleasant and it has some of the worst vocals of any Beach Boys album (I'm surprised that a lot of people seem top have such a poor opinion of the vocals on Love You, but seem to think that these vocals are ok). Bad songs, bad arrangements, bad production, bad vocals, bad mix. There's not much going for it at all. Given that POB was released in the previous year, I do wonder what anyone was thinking with this album. Maybe personal circumstances got in the way, but the group had a very talented man in the background who had been making great music without them. It's pretty obvious from MIU that they needed some creativity and it's almost tragic that we didn't get a Dennis-led Beach Boys album. It would have been a hell of a lot better than MIU (and even through two songs and a lead on LA he managed to make the next album worthwhile).

1. My Diane – The only highlight. I'm not totally sold on the production but the Dennis and Brians vocals are very good. The lyrics are simple, but very relatable and they sum up the feelings of a painful break up - "Everything is wrong and nothing is right" - I've certainly felt that way before.

There's a big gap in quality from this to the rest of the album. I find it hard to rank because there are so many poor tracks, but here goes -


2. Pitter Patter – One of the better ones here, but still not great. Mike sounds better here than he does elsewhere on the album. Parts of the vocal arrangement are weak.

3. Match Point of Our Love – I can imagine Brian being quite proud of this one at the time. I quite like the melody and I can imagine the track and melody as the opening to a low-budget late 70's or early 80's cop show.

4. Hey Little Tomboy – Apart from the obvious lyrical issue on this one, I can't stand Mike's bridge vocal but I do like the "Hey little, Hey little, Hey little Tomboy" vocals (Dennis' part makes this worthwhilse) and Carl's vocal is reasonable too (a big reminder of what the album mostly misses).

5. Sweet Sunday Kinda Love – The album misses Carl a lot, but even he can't make this song shine. It’s a nice vocal, but a weak song.

6. She’s Got Rhythm – A punchy song with an enthusiastic vocal from Brian, but his falsetto is really poor here. I've heard it described as a return to form from Brian but it's not in my view. Also it's a strange song with an upbeat melody and lyric (Imagine Brian disco dancing?) and then an oddly mournful and eerie section that Mike sings, that doesn't really fit to my ears. But I do like the transition back to Brian after this section.

7. Winds of Change  - I first heard a brief clip of the verse whilst the album was out of print and unavailable to me. It sounded like a good song and I eagerly awaited the chance to hear the full version - but ended up very disappointed. The song seems half-finished and underdeveloped and the production and vocal arrangement really let it down. With a better vocal arrangement, it could have been one of those Beach Boys tracks rescued by a great vocal round at the end, but the vocals are sparse and poorly arranged. A big let down, given that there's something in the song itseld that could have been quite pleasant.

8. Wontcha Come Out Tonight – Very unpleasant opening vocals on the "Come, come-a, come-a, come out tonight" parts not rescued by a decent Mike Love part in his lower range. Then Brian's lead vocal is reasonably strong and he sounds good, if a little uninterested. Then Mike undoes all of his good work on the intro with his lead vocal - "I've been anticipatin'". Mike Love with his nose turned up to 11. The song is quite weak and isn't helped by some poor lyrics (which read like classic latter-day Love lyrics). The ending does improve things a bit.
9. Come Go with Me - Better vocals, but a pointless exercise.
10. Kona Coast – A pointless throwback. Maybe some people might think it’s ok, but the Beach Boys should have been capable of so much more than this (and I think Brian and Dennis' work in the late 70's shows this).
11. Peggy Sue – Again, pointless. Reasonably polished but why bother? It offers absolutely nothing.
12. Belles of Paris – Another terrible song.

I love She's Got Rhythm. I remember literally nothing else on the album.

So happy to see good reviews of 'Matchpoint of our love'  ;D

Its a beautiful, beautiful song and Brian's singing is as perfect as its gets. And not sure who does all the cool jazzy guitar riffs in this song (Al?) but they sound awesome! I really enjoy when a guitar complements the mood of a song, instead of purely driving it - really good job here.

I've enjoyed listening to most of the tracks on MIU since its release 35 years ago.  But Brian's screeching lead vocal on She's Got Rhythm makes that song virtually unlistenable to me, and easily one of the worst tracks the BBs ever released.  However, not everyone agrees with my opinion as evidenced by the fact that it's the lead off song on the album and a number of posters here seem to think it's an OK song.

It would really surprise me if Al played any substantial guitar on this album, or most albums for that matter.

She's got rhythm is the one song where mike outshines Brian vocally IMHO

Hate to admit it, but... agh, so true. I love She's Got Rhythm, but Brian's falsetto, man...

True, but he did play a substantial amount of bass guitar during the early years.

Brian sounds like he is in pure agony trying to use his "gruff" voice like his young voice.

I was about to write my list of MIU tracks - however i agree with absolutely every single thing you've just said, so now i don't need to bother.

1 "Pitter Patter": up tempo BW goodness. Great vocals from Mike and Al. Great vibe too.
2 "Wontcha Come Out Tonight": BW sounds great on this. Too bad he didn't sound like this for the next 20 years. I bet they woulda had more commercial success.
3 "Peggy Sue": Not really anything special. But its a great song and its hard to mess it up. Al sounds great. And it kinda just sounds like an updated version of Buddy Holly's great tune.
4 "Match Point Of Our Love": Yeah Brian sounds good. But the track sounds like a late '70s porn soundtrack. Not to mention that overall, the song sounds lifeless. It doesn't sound like something would BW would do. Just my opinion.
5 "Hey Little Tomboy": Nice melody. Typically gruff Brian, but I'm used to it and so he sounds fine to me. Obviously pretty creepy lyrics. But I really don't think this was Brian being intentionally creepy. I bet he thought it was funny.
6 "She's Got Rhythm": Brian falsetto does not sound anywhere close to as good as it used to here. But it's kind of a catchy tune.
7 "Kona Coast": Lame rip off "Hawaii" but whatever. It's inoffensive. And it sounds ok to my ears. I wouldn't turn it off. But its nowhere close to what The Beach Boys were before this.
8 "My Diane": Overrated imo. The Dennis vocal is good, as is the confessional Brian lyric. But its kinda plodding, and it's just not a stand out to me.
9 "Come Go With Me": Wall of Al's. It sounds ok, but it's kinda pointless. Of course it becomes a hit.
10 "Winds Of Change": Nice try by Al and co. at a sentimental ballad. It's ok. I don't hate it but it doesn't pull at the heart strings like the creators of this song probably wish it would.
11 "Sweet Sunday Kinda Love": Could Carl sound less interested. Another boring, plodding BW number. I'm pretty sure this was originally for American Spring btw.
12 "Belles Of Paris": Swing and a miss from Mr. Michael Love and co. Seems like an attempt at a novelty hit. Or maybe this was Mike's idea of "doing something different".

Well, you're right that My Diane doesn't fit with the rest of the album, but you're completely back-to-front as to the reasons why. It doesn't fit because it's good!

I can kind of enjoy this record if I don't think about it, but basically it can be summed up as '1 great song (my diane), badly produced, 11 awful songs, badly produced'

Big turning point for Brian as a songwriter imo. It's the first time he turned out genuinely mediocre material. Songs like 'woncha come out tonight' simply don't have any spark of individuality to them, whereas prior to this, even his lesser, throwaway material always had something. I find it kind of shocking how far he slipped, really...Mike and Al get a lot of stick for this record, but Brians name is there on the credits for all of the worst songs...these could have been written by some local group that vanished without trace. Awful.

So yeah. That's what it's got going for it.

1. My Diane - Very, very good. A breath of air amidst the vomit stench.
2. Wontcha Come Out Tonight - Good vocal by Brian, lousy vocals by everyone else, but nice, nice song.
3. She's Got Rhythm - Dee-lightful as all hell, weirdly.
4. Pitter Patter - S'okay.
5. Come Go With Me - Remember when the Boys used to do GREAT Doo-wop covers in the '60s? Well, that was a LONG time ago. Still, not wholly awful.
6. Sweet Sunday Kind of Love - Carl Wilson is there, he's singin' nice I suppose but somehow I can't manage to give a rat's ass. Oh well.
7. Peggy Sue - Buddy Holly is spinning so fast in his grave, he's become a pulsar.
8. Belles of Paris - STFU Mike. Shut it. Don't make me go get the staple gun.
9. Kona Coast - Like a belch that is awkwardly shaped like the song 'Hawaii'. If I were the state of Hawaii, I'd sue for defamation of character.
10. Match Point of Our Love - Laughably bad, but it's not all that funny.
11. Winds of Change - Huh? Never heard of it. Or so I cry to myself in bed at night.
12. Hey Little Tomboy - 100% nuclear waste, liberally smothered in Mike Love's gastric juice and topped off with the Miracle Whip-covered testicle of Adolf Hitler. So yeah, not very good at all, if you catch my drift.


By far the Worst Brian-involved BBs album by about 93 million miles, which is the distance from the sun to the Earth. Woo boy.

9. Match Point of Our Love - Interesting to listen to sometimes, never stuck in my head.
10. Peggy Sue - Good cover, that's about all.
11. Pitter Patter - Doesn't do much, not bad, but not good.
12. Really rough Dennis vocals, hard to listen to at times.
