Title: Debated Song Titles
Post by: Eric Aniversario on January 22, 2013, 12:23:59 AM
1. And Your Dreams Come True - or - And Your Dream Comes True ???
2. Trader - or - The Trader ???
3. He Come Down - or - He Came Down ???
4. Add Some Music To Your Day - or - Add Some Music ???

1....I think that on most, if not all, releases, it is the former, but in the actual song, they say the latter.
2....I've seen both of these on different releases over the years.
3....Most releases say the former, when the Cabinessence website was the main place to find BB info in the 90's, the latter became more popular because it was listed as such there.
4....I think it's pretty much the former, but sometimes people get confused because an earlier incarnation of Sunflower had the latter title.  Also the 93 boxed set used the latter.

Thoughts?  Additions to the list?

"Don't Back Down" or "Don't Break Down". Dilemma.

California Saga: California or California Saga (On My Way to Sunny Californ-I-A) or just California

California Saga: California or California Saga (On My Way to Sunny Californ-I-A) or just California
I thought about that too.  The first one is the album track, the second one is the renamed single.  The third one is the incorrect title from the boxed set.  I've seen it just called "California Saga" too.  On the setlist archive, I think I usually used "California Saga".

To add to confusion, the album version appears on 50 Big Ones with the single title.

I always thought that California Saga referred to the entire three song suite.

I always thought that California Saga referred to the entire three song suite.

Al's remake on his solo album with Crosby, Stills and Young is called California Saga even though it's only the third part ("California").

Cabin Essence or Cabinessence
Cottonfields or Cotton Fields or Cotton Fields (The Cotton Song)
Disney Girls or Disney Girls (1957)

Cabin Essence or Cabinessence
Cottonfields or Cotton Fields or Cotton Fields (The Cotton Song)
Disney Girls or Disney Girls (1957)

"Cabin Essence" is the original title for the song, but the words were joined for the 20/20 release. Cotton Fields, also present on 20/20 with this same title, was rerecorded with different arrangements for a single release, thus becoming "Cottonfields (The Cotton Song)". "Disney Girls" was used with the "(1957)" for the Beach Boys version, and later appeared without it on Bruce's solo album Going Public.

"Don't Back Down", for sure.

I struggle with the comma issue. Is it "Kiss Me, Baby" or "Kiss Me Baby"? Is it "Don't Worry, Baby" or "Don't Worry Baby"? Is it "Fun, Fun, Fun" or "Fun Fun Fun"? Is it "Cool, Cool Water" or "Cool Cool Water"? Is it "Heads You Win, Tails I Lose" or "Heads You Win Tails I Lose" or "Heads You Win - Tails I Lose"? Is it "Help Me Rhonda" or "Help Me, Rhonda"? Because I'm always making mix CD's for people, my OCD forces me to look up the spellings before I type up the titles. :police:

I'm forever confusing "Wouldn't It Be Nice" with "(Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again. Easily done.

It does, but sometimes the third part is referred to by that name as well.  Particularly during live shows.

You just reminded me that he changed it even further on his album, calling it "A California Saga".

California Saga: California
California Saga/ California
California Saga
California
A California Saga
California Saga (On My Way To Sunny Californ-i-a)

That's 6 different variations of the title of one song!  Crazy!

Vegetables or Vege-Tables?

"Vegetables" is the name for the Smiley Smile release, "Vega-Tables" being the name for the original Smile-intended and The Smile Sessions release.

Dennis edition:

Morning Christmas or Holy Evening or Holy Holy?
Companion or Constant Companion?
Baby Blue (Eyes) or Baby Blue?

Also, previously stated in the thread but I would still love to know:

Sweet Sunday Kind of Love or Sweet Sunday?
Add Some Music or Add Some Music to Your Day?

First ones listed are my preferred names, fwiw.

This thread has gotten interesting...there are far more debated titles than I thought.  I wonder what the best way to get definitive answers would be, if that is even possible.

Help me rhonda or help me ronda.....maybe someone should do a mash up of "help me rhonda" and "Little Honda" so it'll be titled "Help me honda"

It's weird, and kind of a Beach Boys-centric sort of phenomenon. You don't see this happening with the Beatles, for example.

Probably because of how comparitively little unreleased material the Beatle have. Most of the songs in this topic were either unreleased or released after being drawn from another (solo) project, so names get shuffled about.

With a song like Morning Christmas, which was in the vaults for two decades, and rejected from two different projects, it probably was just being called three different names by three different people.

"Karate" or "Karote".

Being serious for a moment, I'd go with the version on the first release.

Smile
No debate.  End of story unless one has some kind of fascination with the random guy who did the typography on the vintage slicks.  And if that's the case, those same people should be corrected EVERY time they post "Good Vibrations" instead of "Good VibrAtions".  Duh.

Ah yes, one of my all-time BB fan forum moments was to learn that, after folk waffling on about how the lower case i indicated how Brian saw his place in the universe and wow isn't that cosmically significant, the letter in question was a result of some dude in the Capitol art department thinking it looked nice. You couldn't make it up.  ;D
