Title: 1977 version of Lady Lynda
Post by: Smilin Ed H on January 09, 2013, 05:04:49 AM
Was this written for Almost Summer or did it exist already?

I've lost my copy - can someone remind me as to whether or not the original version used the Bach intro and outro?

If it didn't, whose idea was this?

I'm sure I've read that Al said DW helped him with the vocal arrangements - was this on the original or the LA version?

Thanks.

Lady Lynda was initially worked on during the MIU sessions. There's a video of Ron Altbach explaining it somewhere on youtube.

I prefer this version.  In fact I prefer it to a lot of the stuff on MIU!

Yeah neither! How is it different?

No intro, and you can clearly hear Brian singing on it. I prefer it quite a bit to the released version.

I like the song in either incarnation, but the MIU mix is pretty solid. The intro is superfluous, so that's another point for the earlier version.

What MIU mix ? The song was neither recorded nor worked on there (or if it was, it's not listed on the AFM sheets) - the studio in the video is most likely Brother, and even if it isn't, it sure as hell isn't MIU (cf. the "Our Team" promo film).

Cool stuff, don't think I've ever seen that.  There is some genuine excitement and camarederie those last few minutes of the video.

On the outtake version, is that Al or Brian doing the high "ad-libs" at the end? I kind of like this version better. It's prettier, I guess you could say.

This is what Ron Altbach himself had to say 3 years ago about the early version of Lady Linda:

I co-wrote this with Al. We wrote it in Big Sur in 1976. The only BBoys on the vocals are Al and Mike. Bobby Figueroa, Eddie Carter, Eddie Tuleja and I were the back-up vocals. The electric wurlitzer piano was originally the sound my band King Harvest used on Dancing in the Moonlight. So, yes, this was in the same kind of non-bboys production that Al and I did on MIU. And we had a great time doing it. Ron Altbach

Not disputing that at all, I was just referencing the video that is called "Lady Lynda - MIU Mix" (as posted previously in this thread).

I wonder what Al thought about this video after his falling out with Mike in 1998.

So it was recorded for Almost Summer (or recorded then used on the Almost Summer OST) then put forward in that form for MIU but rejected and completely re-recorded for LA.

Most definitely that's Brother Studio, and that's Earle Mankey doing the mix.

Umm... what's Almost Summer?

EDIT:  nevermind.  I found it.  http://www.esquarterly.com/bellagio/albumarchive5.html#AlmostSummer  I had never heard of this!!

Video title is inaccurate.

This mix wasn't being worked on for possible inclusion in the MIU album?

No. The track was considered for MIU - according to Elliott - but there's no record of any work being done on it at MIU.

I can dig that. I thought the video was titled after the album it was considered for, rather than the studio being used.

Is it not possible that when people say MIU mix they are referring to the album not the studio?

People should use the English language more carefully.  ;D

The 1977 version of Lady Lynda was being played in concert as early as August, which would probably mean that it existed on tape as early as summer 1977.

Not only is it possible, it's the more likely option most of the time!

Not only was it not "initially worked on during the MIU sessions" as stated here, the video of Ron clearly says nothing of the sort either.

Strike two.  ;D

Ok, maybe not at the college, if that's what you want to keep harping on. But it was after Love You's release and before MIU's release, right? Worked on for the idea of possibly including it on the next album?
