Title: 10,000 Years
Post by: Smilin Ed H on January 09, 2013, 05:01:16 AM
Do we know anything more abiout this song?  Is its genesis any clearer these days?
Is it the same as Dennis' 2,000 Years?
Did Mike have a hand in the original tune - or what I assume is the original - that I've heard on one of Dan Addington's DW compliations?
Is Mike's version the only recorded version with vocals - that we know of?

Not knowing any real information about this, I can say with near-certainty that Mike's only contribution to the song was the lyrics, so his influence is probably non-existent on an instrumental track of the song.

Putting Mike's solo version on the new album (instead of, or in addition to Daybreak Over the Ocean) would've been a cool idea.

u asked mike about it backstage on 50th tour, he said it was orifingally called "10,000,000,000 years" and "ooga booga booga booga caveman day" prior to that. no additional info, he refused.

"It's a damn shame".

This was pretty much answered way back in 1982, in the pages of the Add Some Music fanzine.  Brad Elliott wrote: "According to Al Jardine the song, correctly titled '10,000 Years Ago', was written by Mike, but Dennis did his own arrangement of the song with new lyrical and musical contributions.  Dennis cut a track, but Mike didn't like it".  So there you go...if Mike's (relatively recent) solo recording ever sees official release, I'm sure authorship will be credited solely to him, as it certainly won't contain the Dennis contributions that Mike didn't like.

On the other hand, perhaps Mike will wise up and realize he's shitty when it comes to composing melodies, and he should use Dennis' track to go with his lyrics, and release it that way on the Made in California set

Thanks c-man.  So the version on the Dennis boots would have been his arrangement of the track to potentially be on 15 BO and no lyrics were recorded back then?

Here's what Alan Boyd said about it:

There's a tape in the Beach Boys archive, a three-part backing track, on "!0,000 Years" that apparently dates back to the sessions for a project that eventually led to "15 Big Ones."  The first part of "10,000 Years" was later reworked and became the musical foundation for the song "Are You Real?" on the Bambu compilation.  The rest of "10.000 Years" derived from an older Dennis recording from 1974 logged as "Dennis' Symphony," which eventually became "Friday Night," including an outtake section of the latter song that didn't make the final edit on "Pacific Ocean Blue."

Bit of a jigsaw puzzle there...
