Title: BBs mix CD (Christmas present for my father)
Post by: Lowbacca on December 22, 2012, 09:23:14 AM
Hey all.

I've just finished a personal BBs mix CD for my father, a music lover (& collector) and casual fan of the BBs. A couple of years ago he borrowed a truck load of BBs CDs from me (all of the 2fers, PS, all kinds of official compilations, bootlegs et cetera) and spent weeks on creating his own 2-CD compilation. It was a great one. Anyway, he lost it a couple of months ago so I thought I'd give him something similar for Christmas this year: a mix of my favourite BBs material that would, for the most part, be beyond the casual fan's level of familiarity and at the same time create a constistent tone of its own (while having a sequence of tracks that makes sense). It should fit on a single CD, run under an hour and if possible feature a round number of tracks.

Anyway, the following is what I came up with. I thought that before I actually burn the damn thing I'd get some feedback from the ultra-nerds on how successful I was with the parameters mentioned above. Here it goes:

01 Radio Spot #3 [from the GV box set Disc 5]
02 In My Room
03 All Summer Long
04 Please Let Me Wonder
05 I'm Waiting For The Day
06 With Me Tonight
07 Aren't You Glad
08 Let The Wind Blow
09 Little Bird
10 Slip On Through
11 Deirdre
12 At My Window
13 'Til I Die
14 Here She Comes
15 Sail On, Sailor
16 Only With You
17 I'll Bet He's Nice
18 Baby Blue
19 Isn't It Time [album version]
20 Pacific Coast Highway

P.S. I'm going to use THIS IMAGE (http://i49.tinypic.com/33ww9jn.png) as the CD cover and put THIS ONE (http://i46.tinypic.com/34hxmcm.jpg) below the tracklist on the back.  :3d

Those are neat choices for him, especially the pictures, pretty well thought out.  I find the threads about the intergenerational relationship with this music, so interesting, and often give BB CD's to my niece and nephews for Christmas.  Oddly, enough one of my kids now has a girlfriend who is a BB fan, who went to the same high school as me and is teaching preschool. A hatrick, and she is "in!"  She is getting a BB CD.  It does not cease to amaze me that there is this whole generation of young people who are standing in their parents shoes, while they have music of their own contemporaries and that might not be a result of subliminal brainwashing as kids.

Have you thought of putting the music on a little mp3 player, that fits more than CD?  Choosing a playlist is really so hard and, mostly I've found it an exercise in futility.

Whatever you decide on, he will surely love it, as you took the time to give him a gift so close to his and all of our hearts.    ;)

Nice! But there's a lack of rocking songs. No surf songs? I'd always add stuff like "Surfin' safari" "Shut down" "409" etc. but that's just me. You probably know better what your father likes

That was the idea: no rockers, (almost) no singles. I was aiming for a calmer, rather pensive and mellow/melancholic atmosphere. Obviously there's a couple of faster / more upbeat songs to shake things up, but they still ought to fit the bill.

Really nice mix!

I hope when I have children, they get me BB stuff for Christmas!

I like the mix too - would probably drop Deirdre in favour of another but you know your Pop!

Now I have children I hope they buy me BBs stuff for Christmas!  ;D

I'd suggest Back Home and Let's Put Our Hearts Together , two of my personal "off the beaten track" favourites.

Thanks guys. He hasn't listened to it yet, but I'm sure he's going to like it.

@Junebug/EgoHanger/AGD: basically all the tracks you guys mentioned were in the mix at one point or another - but were deleted due to the overall experience/sequence being more important than individual tracks. Many thanks, anyway!  :)
