Title: Dennis interview 1977 Post by: Wild-Honey on December 10, 2012, 11:16:48 PM I received an email from Rock's Backpages yesterday that stated -
• To the infinitely expanding universe that is the RBP library we've added Alan Smith on RICK NELSON (NME, 1962), Mitchell Cohen on DENNIS WILSON (Phonograph Record, 1977), Neil Tennant on SPANDAU BALLET (Smash Hits, 1985) and heeps more. (they spelled heaps like that not me ;) Below is the link to the article, which you have to pay to read, I would love to subscribe to RBP but it's a luxury I can't afford at the moment. They do have some free to read articles on the BB's but this isn't one of them. My question is - Has anybody read it now or when it first came out. I tried the search bar but nothing came up. Thanks. http://www.rocksbackpages.com/article.html?ArticleID=21237 Title: Re: Dennis interview 1977 Post by: bgas on December 11, 2012, 04:24:54 AM I suppose now is as good a time as any to post a reminder:
Always check the Media section, when in search of good reading. Steve Mayo has posted a ton of old articles( I helped a little) and there's enough other threads there to keep one busy for almost forever! I just added the 9/77 PRM to the magazine thread Title: Re: Dennis interview 1977 Post by: Wild-Honey on December 11, 2012, 04:50:41 AM Thank you for doing that and as always, thanks Steve :)
Title: Re: Dennis interview 1977 Post by: rn57 on December 11, 2012, 09:17:56 AM I read that issue of Phonograph Record when it came out. The magazine, probably partly because it was based in LA, and partly because its publisher the late Marty Cerf was a friend of Brian's, tended to have more extensive coverage of the BBs than just about any other publication in those days. Certainly Rolling Stone didn't give Love You and POB that kind of coverage.
Phonograph Record had a lot of fine reviews, many written by Ken Barnes and Greg Shaw. (Barnes was its managing editor for just about all of its existence, from '70 to '78; Shaw was heavily involved with it until his work on the Bomp label increased around '77.) It also had a hilarious record-review column from Flo & Eddie for years, and an equally funny, completely irreverent column by Mark Shipper of Paperback Writer fame. Rodney Bingenheimer also wrote a gossip column for a time. Title: Re: Dennis interview 1977 Post by: Mikie on December 11, 2012, 09:49:54 AM I read that issue of Phonograph Record when it came out. Same here. Probably picked it up at Tower. One of my favorites. |
