Title: Chances of seeing another rarities release similar to Hawthorne, CA?
Post by: Pet Sounder on December 06, 2012, 03:41:32 PM
How likely is it?  I just eat this type of stuff up.  In fact the very reason that I adore many of my favorite BB songs is because I heard a backing track or vocals-only version or something that made me realize a depth to the song that I missed while just listening to the original version.

In my dreams Capitol would release a gigantic boxed set (library?) with every single unabridged backing track session and vocal session (at least EVERYTHING from '65-'67).  Or make it all available for download and you could pick and choose what material you want and pay by the minute of material downloaded or something.  However knowing that such a release will never happen I wonder if another rarities release is possible.  Did Hawthorne, CA not sell well enough to justify it's production costs?  Is it not commercially viable to follow that up with a similar release?

There was that release, and Endless Harmony, and the earlier Rarities release, and the outtakes on the twofers, and the Pet Sounds box, and the Smile Box.

Seems those releases kept the fire burning for fans and stoked the legend.   With the reunion and all of the current product, I don't see that happpening outside of the release of an all-out box set...at least for now.    A lt of that sort of cool stuff is  already out there on boots for the hard core fans....

Still, to have it professionally compiled like on Hawrhorne was a real treat

It's a good thing they aren't about to release an all-out boxed set, then.

Oh wait.

We really need to transition into drooling and speculating over the track list. C'mon, track list...

I take it you're completely oblivious to the 50th anniversary box set that is being worked on...

i highly doubt solo material will make the cut, otherwise that's one damn good list. I miss some of the better Love You tracks tho, perhaps the demos should be released instead?

Title: Re: Chances of seeing another rarities release similar to Hawthorne, CA?

Great list but as well as all the unlikely solo material, there're a lot of straight album cuts which many of us will have multiple copies of. Much prefer alt/live/outtake versions of those, so there's some fresh listening material for our ears.

One thing I hope the forthcoming box does is break down some of the tracks – include demo, instrumental takes, vocal overdubs and finished product, where appropriate mixed for stereo debut, or remastered, so we can see the progression of such tracks from start to release.

Looking at that list, I am amazed people think Lazy Lizzie is worthy of release. I'm sure even the bootlegger was disappointed when they found it.

Think the nearest you might reasonably expect to get to a fresh Hawthorne CA/Endless Harmony-like set would be if Capitol simultaneously released a 2-disc version of the MIC box for the public at large, bit like the 2CD TSS set.

One hasn't been announced but it seems to be quite common practice – see the recent Led Zepp release, the up-coming Rumours sets, the Stones' Grrr packages… there are precedents.

And there's an opportunity to shove out a dozen or twelve additional 2CD-only tracks not on the box… long as it's not a single must-have bonus track, I'd buy (despite being in the doldrums!).

Better than most songs on M.I.U. I love how the chorus explodes.

Fixed that for you.

Given how often the Beach Boys have blurred the line between group and solo projects in the past, both on stage and on record, I think you've been a bit over-zealous with your strikethroughs there.  It would be a shame to omit a recording as unique as "Don't Fight The Sea", for instance, simply because it appeared on a solo album.  (And while I assume that Alex's list only took studio recordings into consideration, what of group live performances of solo tracks?  I don't think it would upset too many people if a good live version of "River Song" from the mid-'70s turned up in a nice mix on the box set.)

And it breaks my heart to see "You're Still A Mystery" crossed out.  I recall you casting doubt on its release elsewhere (oh look, it was here: http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,14160.msg325400.html#msg325400) but surely something of such obvious importance and quality should at least be considered.  I'm sure ownership issues can be resolved with a bit of negotiation and / or chequebook action; I for one don't mind paying a few quid more for my box set if it means that they can get some of the stuff from the "slightly awkward" pile out there.

If they released a 2CD version of this box for the public at large, presumably it would be a career spanning compilation focusing on hits that also had a few lesser known singles and more obscure fan/band-member favorites thrown in.  It seems to me that that would be redundant since that's exactly what 50 Big Ones is.

Don't think so. That wasn't the format of the Endless Harmony, Hawthorne CA, or TSS sets and as we've just had 50 Biggies, why, as you rightly point out so why would they repeat that?

Way I see it, 50BOs lure in a fresh audience, 2CD MiC provides further inroads for them without committing them to the full spend on the box.

Anyway, January's far too early for a comp of summer hits - knowing the BBs, 2013's GHs will be out in time for Thanksgiving!

'lazy lizzie' is really great.

Is it the latent paedophilia, the recycled chorus, the crappy vocals (complete with orgasmic shrieking!), the non-existent lyrics (about picking up school girls!!), crap production, whispering and disturbing noises in the bridge, etc that grabs you? It's awful!

Granted, the harmonica is a nice touch. But this is a moot point, they'll never release it.

I'd rather listen to the complete works of Kenny G three times in a row than hear Lazy Lizzie again.

Better than most songs on M.I.U. I love how the chorus explodes.

I'd take half a CD of Lazy Lizzie session material over Pitter Patter....

The real question is why David Leaf raved about this song like it was second coming of "hitmaker" BW.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but what exactly did David Leaf say about the atrocious Lazy Lizzie?

Out of the 200+ useless compilations "the beach boys" have released, only 2 deserve my recognition of being legitimate, worthwhile and full of love/thought. They are the Endless Harmony Soundtrack & Hawthorne, CA Birthplace of a Musical Legacy.

How about 1993's "Thirty Years of Good Vibrations"?  Unless you classify box sets in a separate category from "regular" compilations...

If MIC has about 25% unreleased material, it will surpass Hawthorne CA and Endless harmony.

Once it's out I reckon it'll take ooh… five mins for folks on this board to suggest sufficient still-unreleased tracks to make up another 2cd set! And another minute for Phil to deny it's possible!

It would also massively surpass the first box set so that would be cracking. The 1993 box set had the Smile songs and 10 or 11 others I think (except for the live/vocal only/alternate mixes etc.).

Well I was 9 when thirty years of the beach boys was released. But I have my thoughts about it now. I'm glad the songs were put in chronological order, the booklet was stellar, the bonus disk was a real treat. But there are a lot of songs that I think should have been omitted and ones that should have been included. I'm not to keen on the packaging, and the individual cd cases/pictures. I believe unreleased material should be put in a package of their own e.g. Hawthorne CA & endless harmony..

Soulful old man sunshine/ help me, Rhonda (alternate single version)/ do it again (early version)/ loop de loop/ til I die (alternate mix)/ long promised road live 1972/ Brian's back & the hidden A Capella sample of kiss me, baby are the highlights of the album.

Kiss me, baby (a cappella mix), Salt Lake City (session highlights), devoted to you (without party overdubs), lonely days, I went to sleep (a cappella mix), a time to live in dreams, be with me (backing track), add some music to your day (a cappella mix), forever (a cappella mix), sail on sailor (backing track) & the Lord's Prayer are my favorite tracks. ;D
