Title: This Car of Mine
Post by: SufferingFools on November 29, 2012, 07:30:37 AM
To me, this song seems to get an awful lot done in just a minute and a half.  By the time it fades out, it feels as if it's taken you on a pretty long journey in a surprisingly short time.  I guess in that respect it's like some of the tracks on Smiley Smile, but yet it manages to have that effect without being avant-garde.  Anyone else get a similar impression?

It is one of my true favourites from their early period. Really, really love it.

Diddly Hop.

I've always loved it but think it's just TOO short.  My custom mix runs 2:18.

Great song.  I feel pretty stupid for only recently realizing that it was Dennis that sings it.   :-X  I don't know why, but my brain always told me it was Mike singing out of his range.

I played this constantly when I first heard this, I can't really listen to it now though. Got bored of it I think.

There are times when I think Mike and Dennis sound similar and this one of the songs where that is noticeable.

Always liked it -- interesting to me is the sense of yearning, even melancholy in a song about a car.  Similar to "I Get Around" in that sense.  Very Brian Wilson.

"Dennis' strong singing makes the listener wish that he'd bee given a better song", as David Leaf puts it in the liner notes. I just can't understand that. The song is already great, clearly in the better half of Shut Down vol 2.

Indeed. Earliest precursor of This Whole World. Who would have thought?

The version by the World Famous Bluejays on Smile, Vibes, Harmony got me into this song. Good garage band rendition. Worth checking out that tribute album if you like that kinda thing.

I've grown so accustomed to listening to the mono version that I didn't enjoy this that much, but good edit anyway.

I agree with the earlier poster who said that the song sounds unfinished. I would also use the word filler. The production is pretty weak as are the lyrics (no clunker!).

After the intensity and beauty of WOTS it's a great catchy way to end side 1. Then side 2 - Wham! WDFFIL kicks in. What an underated album Shut Down is!

That was how I got into it too!  Nice dimension they added with the backing vocals on that version.
