Title: did any of them have an interesting enough early life to warrant a "nowhere boy"
Post by: dwtherealbb on November 29, 2012, 05:06:18 AM
type movie? Not much has been said about their early life, but is there enough information to make it an interesting movie?

Nothing nearly as interesting as Lennon. Just kids living in suburbia, relatively affluent family... Okay, Wilson boys' daddy was a meanie, so with enough Hollywood crayon you could have something there, but not really.

Dennis. Raised hell a lot, got beat up by his dad, skipped school, got with chicks, surfed, set fire to things, played drums.

Taking a dump on newspaper might be an interesting scene to watch.

If the movie concentrated on Murry's exotic punishments it would make horror cult classic. Pink Flamingos meets Bad Taste.

That's the only "interesting" point I could see in their pre-band days. They all were so very young when the Beach Boys started that there really was not much time for anything else

I wasn't comparing them to the Beatles.

it wouldn't be a beach boys movie though. Remember that in Nowhere Boy the word "Beatles" is never mentioned.

It still kinda is, though. And, John Lennon is much of a bigger figure (in today's society, anyway), than all of the individual Beach Boys put together. Not saying it should be that way, but....

Is "nuevos-papel" really the spanish word for newspaper? That'd be pretty silly.

If I'm right, periodico (con accento on the "o") is the word for newspaper

I would actually like to see some more biopics of rock musicians but it would have to be done right though.

That's the thing though - the biopic is fundamentally structured to suck. The only time it works - like in I'm Not There - is when the genre itself is interrogated.

They're planning to make a Brian biopic, right? It's still in the works, according to that People interview.
I really think a good documentary works better when it comes to most of these rock figures.

I agree with you 100%. Although I might enjoy a Brian bio pic if it takes an I'm Not There approach. Brian has been several different fellows in his lifetime.

Yes. Of course, everyone has. And I'm Not There is brilliant but I wouldn't want to see it simply become another model for people to use and re-use, simply air-dropping in the next rock star. The concept worked especially well for I'm Not There because Dylan himself has shown throughout his entire life (as that movie demonstrates) the inherent performativity of identity. I wouldn't mind seeing a bio-pic though that, like I'm Not There, refuses to adhere to the standards of the conventional bio-pic but in some way other than the way that I'm Not There did it. Another good one is Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

Still, I've said it before and I'll say it again, the best bio-pic on Brian Wilson has probably already been made. It's called Whale Music.

You're maybe right, but still no one of The Beatles was compared to Mozart & the kind as Brian. So at least musically he's steps ahead from John Lennon. And to me, it has more significance than any social movements, charity campaigns, supports of human rights etc. In addition, I think that Imagine - the most popular song composed by John - is extremely overrated, full stop.

I'm with you there RangeRover,  I really don't like Imagine,  I respect his views and the sentiments of the song, but I think it's overrated too. Love Jealous guy.

Doesn't the interest come from how the childhood affected the later work? Lennon had an interesting childhood because it fueled so many great tracks - Strawberry Fields, Julia, the whole POB album. Although Dennis also had a POB album (same initials!), there wasn't a consistent, sustained body of work over a decade or more that you could partially explain by the guy's childhood.

Brian's creativity was, I think, 90% musical rather than biographical. Maybe he's more like Macca in that regard? Both Brian and Macca were musical sponges who wove their influences into great art largely independently of biographical experiences, as far as I can see.
