Well of course there's always Yes, who IMO was pretty much the apex of progressive rock.

King Crimson's first two albums are absolutely fantastic, as are Genesis'  Foxtrot and Selling England By The Pound.
The Grateful Dead's Live/Dead and Pink Floyd's The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn are two of the best psychedelic albums IMO.

Mighty Baby (1st album), Pretty Things (SF Sorrow era), Locomotive all made killer albums in 68/69.

Lots of good 45s by groups who didn't do anything else too.

I won't say 'best anything ever' cos that's always total b/s unless you've heard every record ever, and I haven't.  ;)

I am really into pink floyd and have all the remasters. Also collecting the moody blues material from this period.

Hell, even deep purple's self titled album is awesome with the mark one lineup with psy/prog material.

aah, you might want to ignore my suggestions in that case. Post Syd Floyd just makes me angry, and the Moody Blues bore me to tears ;)

You don't like floyd up to "Dark Side"?

The moodies are great if you check out the whole 1967-1972 catalog.

Yeah, I know all that stuff, it's just not to my taste...I was being a bit flippant tbh...there's a bit of stuff by both of them I can deal with and I know it all very well, I'd just not choose to listen to it.
Anyway- try some of this maybe?

King Crimson is by far the greatest and least indulgent Prog band. They're the most technically great and have none of the cheeziness like Yes and Genesis.

In The Court > Red > Larks' > In The Wake > Lizard > Starless > Islands

That's not to say that the others are bad, "Close To The Edge" is fantastic and so is "Foxtrot".

Faust is pretty good, for Krautrock.

"Pawn Hearts" by Van Der Graaf Generator is another top album.
