Went down to Streetlight today to get my big 10 inch Surfin' Safari vinyl in the Pee-Chee folder. It was $17.99. Also picked up the "God Made The Radio" vinyl album for 20 bucks while I was there. Just like my other Beach Boys and Brian solo vinyl that I've picked up in recent years (including last year's  Record Store Day "Good Vibrations/Heroes & Villains" vinyl single and Al Jardine signed "Don't Fight The Sea" single) they will probably never see airplay on a turntable. Just for the ol' collectione. Just to look at and admire - you know, visual, non-functional.

On the way out of the store I saw the new Beatles Stereo/mono boxes for sale and drooled a little bit. Guy behind the counter said to "stop staring at it and just buy it!" About 450 smackers. 20 each for the individual albums. I was gonna put it at the top of my Christmas list but I figured I already have the Beatles CD Mono and Stereo sets, so that's gonna have to hold me over for awhile. I would like to hear from someone on this board who bought the new Beatles vinyl to see what the differences are. I assume the standard answer will be "warmer.....richer......etc. compared to the CD's.  Yeah, sure.

Musta seen the stereo box behind the counter.  They have the promo display stuff out already for both.

I picked up the "surfin' safari" record at Terrapin Station Records in Murray, Ky. Got the only one they had. Made my day. $18.99, but I drove an hour for it, so I didn't mind paying what seems a bit steep.

I got mine for less than 20 and that included shipping, none of the store near me, even carried it.

I bought one but it cost $24 (plus tax) at one place and $25 at another.  They still had five left earlier today if anyone is still looking for it and wants me to pick it up.  Shipping from Calgary, Alberta, Canada isn't cheap though :-(
I still have a couple extra sealed RSD Good Vibes / Heroes 10" as well.

Pre-Ordered mine before-hand for £9.99, came a week earlier than RSD. Played it repeatedly for a while.

EDIT: Thought I'd bring my pictures from the other thread over for posterity

Interesting Point - inside the gatefold it says 'From HERE To Back Again' - back cover has the correct spelling.

Same here only I've not had chance to open and play yet… maybe here's a Golden Ticket within the wrapping!

Walked into my local record store at 1 pm after the madness and they had one copy left (and a copy of the Dylan 45) so I bought both.

So, it seems everyone is opening theirs and playing it. Thought about keeping my copy sealed up, is that crazy?

It blows the CD's away sonically a higer resolution for one.

I was able to score last yrs copy of Good Vibrations/ Heroes and Villains for less than $20 on ebay. As I mentioned earlier, do I open them and listen to em or do I leave them sealed for the collectors value?

Who cares what you do?
If you want to open them, do it. If not leave them sealed.
Mine are staying sealed, as part of my collection.
If you don't have a collection, there isn't any collectors value, because there are too many available

Scored a copy of the 1996 Sub Pop single last weekend, but still no luck finding the Black Market Friday ep.

Geez, why do you keep asking about the Record Day release??  They're all over the place!  All you have to do is look; they're not hard to find.  If all else fails, get one on Ebay - they're under 20 bucks!

They ARE hard to find - checked three participating stores in the last week, struck out at each one. Prefer to shop locally, ebay is a last resort. Sorry this pisses you off,  I will shut the f*** up about it now.

Are you talking to me? I asked the question, because I thought it was a good one. Sorry if it doesn't meet your standards.

It's not a good question; if you need someone to tell you what to do, get married

Nope.  I was addressing Lonely Summer.  I had a nice post typed and ready to go with a real good recommendation for you, but I accidently farted and it blew away.

They are nearly impossible to listen to - they spin at 78rpm, yet will only take regular needles, so if unless* you have a 'normal' record player that will go up to 78 I'd advise just leaving it as a nice ornament.

There are mods (involving straw and sticky tape/playing at 45) but I couldn't get it to work.

*Edit for my eternal div-ness

You don't need to apologize. Mikie should, but that would be above him.

Coachhill, your topics aren't dumb at all.  And no need to apologize for anything.

When I started seriously collecting vinyl records in the early 70's, I had a couple of bad experiences. One was that I use to go to used record stores and record swap meets where I bought some sealed albums. When I opened them up, the records were slightly warped. I had two sealed Sunflower albums and a couple of others Warners albums released in 1974 that were also slightly warped. I even remember taking NEW records back to Tower and Record Factory because the needle would bounce all over the place from the record being warped. Back then, Warners and other companies used vinyl that wasn't as thick as Capitol used in the 60's (and not as thick as many companies use now). Same goes for the covers in many instances - very thin. I was told by other collectors that if you ever plan on putting an album on the turntable to play, that you should take the shrink wrap off the cover before storing it away. The justification for that is that many times the shrinkwrap contracts with a little heat and it could tighten up and alter/warp the album cover and the record in it. And always store them vertically and never tightly up against one another on the shelf!

Some collectors choose to keep the shrinkwrap intact (especially the 60's albums) because they think the record is more valuable if you leave it on. I know of one guy who borrowed a shrink wrap machine at work to re-seal some of his albums to make them seem more valuable, especially when he re-sold them! I've also heard of other people doing this. Dumb.

So I learned my lesson fast. Early on, I bought 4 mil clear Polyethylene Pam 12-3/4" x 12-3/4" LP jackets for all my albums. 3 mil will suffice, and you can even buy them in 12-5/8 x 12-5/8" sizes for a snugger fit, but I like them just a tad loose. I've done the same with my 7" 45's with picture sleeves. For the 78's you go with the 10-5/8 x 10-5/8" 3 mil Polyethylene sleeves.

So.........just a recommendation. I'm more than a casual collector and like to keep my original vinyl pressings (and covers) in the same condition that I bought them. If you are in it seriously as a hobby and want to take care to preserve the albums/covers as an investment, then protect them with outer sleeves. Otherwise, take the shrink off or leave it on - it's at your discretion. There are some people who buy two each of a certain record - one to play and one to store away with the cover sealed in the original shrink.
