Title: The Beach Boys in the spot light
Post by: Magic Transistor Radio on November 10, 2012, 06:23:07 PM
It is interesting to see how the Beach Boys are in and out of the spot light (meaning tv appearances/interviews). 2012 has been a big year for them. 1976 was also a very big year. I do find it odd that despite the success of Endless Summer, and their packed out shows, they were not in the spot light very much in 74 and 75. There is very little in terms of videos and photos from that time.

Do you think the Beach Boys were bigger celebraties in 76 then 63-66?

Why the mostly lack of spot light in 74, 75?

Also, very little in the David Marks era. Why the sudden increase after Dave left? I mean there were several promo videos, but the interview setting increased after he left. Like chatting with Ed Sullivan and others.

I'll tackle the easy ones. :-D

Well, who wasn't around in 1974-75, but was "back" in 1976? Indirectly, your questions are ANSWERING the questions why the Beach Boys wanted Brian Wilson back. It's amazing how much attention and power the man commanded then - and now.

I understand how big Brian Wilson was (physically as well :) ). It is understanding there would be an increase at his return. But the lack of media coverage in 74, 75 is still baffling to me.

funny, i don't remember '74 & '75 that way. i used to collect anything that mentioned the beach boys, especially back then. they seemed to be in print quite a lot. summer '74 thru the end of the year it was for endless summer. '75 was for endless summer (again), spirit of america, best band award and esp. the chicago tour.
i posted quite a few articles from those years in the media section. there were many more articles that the fire got. but the group was in print quite a bit during those 2 years.
now as far as videos maybe..but they were on tv (local tv) just about every stop on their tours. maybe not so much as national tv shows.
but they were very much in the "spot light" especially in print.

Ok, thank you for that. I just hadn't found much from youtube from those years nearly as much as 76. I suppose Brian's return was that big.
