Title: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Newguy562 on November 08, 2012, 12:34:24 AM Seriously this song is so slept on..The way Mike delivers those Verses while Brian and the rest sing/hum those sweet harmonies to follow up right behind it is just so flawless. ;D
Mostly all my family members love this song and we always play it when everyone gets together on X-mas eve. ;D (I showed my parents this song but somehow they all knew it before I even told them who sang it.) I've never seen any of you post anything about this song or even mentioned it, shame on you all. >:( Do any of you enjoy this cut? Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Jukka on November 08, 2012, 12:58:19 AM It's okay, but after hearing the Little Saint Nick lyrics set to the music of Drive-In, the "real" version sounds lacklustre in comparison.

"is *insert song title* liked?" "I've been listening to this song and it's great! You guys NEVER talk about it!" I'm not sure it's underrated either. Any christmas song that makes it into the christmas music canon from a pop/rock band is hard to call underrated. Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Melt Away on November 08, 2012, 05:26:14 AM I freaking love this song! Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Sheriff John Stone on November 08, 2012, 07:18:49 AM It's one of the great Christmas songs that has held up over the decades. I never get tired of listening to it because of the various highlights - the intro, Mike's delivery, Brian's little falsetto on the bridge, and the tag. I believe "Little Saint Nick" shows the genius of Brian as much as any other song from his early period (1962-64).

Post by: Shady on November 08, 2012, 08:04:52 AM This album is greater than Pet Sounds when played on christmas day. So true! How underrated is "Christmas Day", one of the best Christmas songs ever. I was really happy to see Zooey Deschanel do a cover of it on her Christmas album Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: rab2591 on November 08, 2012, 08:15:59 AM LOVE Little Saint Nick!
The backing track on 'Stack o Tracks' is tremendous. It's a fun, beautiful song. Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Micha on November 08, 2012, 09:53:53 AM Great, great song. Beautifully composed, tricky chords. Love to play it on the guitar.
The other newly composed for the Christmas album tracks are great, too, just a little underproduced. But songwritingwise they're a step forward from "All Summer Long" in the direction of "Today", just that "Today" is produced more carefully. Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Newguy562 on November 08, 2012, 10:04:39 AM I freaking love this song! It must be so hard to write a Christmas classic but they did it! Another plus is that virtually all of your family knows it unlike if you played them ADITLOAT. I love a lot of their Christmas stuff. Yes I was surprised that my parents knew the song but they told me they heard it on the radio ever since the 60's. They said it like it was a hit that everyone knows and that surprised me. :P It's a family song ..a song by the boys that we all enjoy...They usually go all out on X-mas and everyone is in such a cheerful mood it's like the only time we aren't bickering with each other. (It's a relief) Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Disney Boy (1985) on November 08, 2012, 10:28:57 AM It's generally accepted as being a Xmas standard isn't it? So not that under-rated. Anyway, it's a really nice song - fun lyrics and a typically insanely catchy Brian melody, although i personally much prefer the album version minus the sleighbells. I prefer Man With All The Toys though - just love that guitar line and the 'opp-opp' backing vocals.
Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: pixletwin on November 08, 2012, 10:37:13 AM Yeah. Underrated? This is a Christmas staple on every radio station that plays Christmas songs. Not to mention it is featured every year at Christmas in Coca-cola commercials on TV and in movie theaters?
Underrated? Only if by "underrated" you mean "deservingly appreciated". Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Aegir on November 09, 2012, 12:07:23 AM I think everything on the MIU Christmas album (aside from Bells of Christmas) or Brian's solo album (aside from Little Saint Nick) beats the original Christmas album. Especially the Dick Reynolds side.
I was really happy to see Zooey Deschanel do a cover of it on her Christmas album She & Him did a cover of it on their Christmas album. Just because M. Ward isn't a cute female actress doesn't mean his contributions to the band are less valuable. ugh. I didn't even know how Zooey Deschanel was until I started listening to She & Him. It's all M. Ward, man (and producer/instrumentalist Mike Mogis). Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Myk Luhv on November 09, 2012, 12:11:23 AM Their version sucks anyway since (IIRC) they slow it down to some sort of funereal dirge, remove a bunch of instrumentation, and it seems like she's just... speaking the lyrics. The version of "Little Saint Nick" they do even has Brian's high part excised completely, along with much of the same problems the other song version suffers from!
Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Disney Boy (1985) on November 09, 2012, 12:21:05 AM I don't like Christmas Day, except for that fantastically-cheesy (and it is cheesy!) organ solo. But the first four tracks on the album i love - i think they're all great, and yes Merry Xmas Baby is a gem.
I also don't think Christmas '77 was that bad. It certainly wasn't particuarly accomplished, but they could've made a great little EP/short album out of the strongest cuts. i.e: 1. WINTER SYMPHONY 2. CHILD OF WINTER (the superior bootleg version with the 'Ding Dong Ding Go the Bells' chant throughout the entire fade, not the strangely lifeless released version) 3. MICHEAL ROW THE BOAT ASHORE 4. GO & GET THAT GIRL 5. (ALONE ON) CHRISTMAS DAY 6. HOLY EVENING These are all at the very least pleasant productions, and Holy Evening is absolutely tremendous! It baffles me that they left songs like Go & Get That Girl and AOCD in the vaults, whilst releasing utter, utter garbage like Loop De Loop Santa's Got An Airplane and Kona Xmas. Strange decisions... However, due to my most recent purchase, they have all been overtaken by Morning Christmas, which is breathtaking and sublime. Majestic and powerful. Dennis floored me, once again. Post by: MarcellaHasDirtyFeet on November 11, 2012, 09:52:05 AM I never hear anyone talk about "Santa's Beard" and I don't understand why. As I said above, I love Santa's Beard. Despite my sentimental attachments, I think the modulation to minor in the chorus (is that what's happening?) is super endearing and inventive. Also, the chorus harmonies are really interestingly structured. Although I suppose that could be said for most BW songs... Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Anytime anyone I know hears a Beach Boys song, they always come to me and tell me about it. Even friends that I don't see very often will call me because they heard a Beach Boys song and thought of me. It is kind of cool, really. It really is all my friends know my love for the Beach Boys. :)Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Disney Boy (1985) on November 11, 2012, 02:48:46 PM 2. CHILD OF WINTER (the superior bootleg version with the 'Ding Dong Ding Go the Bells' chant throughout the entire fade, not the strangely lifeless released version) I've never heard this version. Other than the part you mentioned, is the mix significantly different? No, the mix seems otherwise identical. I'd had Child of Winter on bootleg for ages, then when it was finally released on the updated Christmas Album i listened to it and thought Why have they screwed up the fade?? I don't know whether the single back in '74 was this version or the bootleg version...? Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! The Ab in the chorus augments (the Eb note in the chord goes up to an E), and I agree, it's a really cool sound. I love this song! Especially when Brian introduces the high part to the chorus. The whole idea behind the song is so innocent and funny. And yeah, "Little Saint Nick" is soooo good. My dad and a friend of mine have said the same thing about the "Christmas comes this time each year..." line. Some people are just really interested in lyrics in such a literary way. I wouldn't want that line any other way, though. Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Micha on November 12, 2012, 09:59:34 AM As for the length, yes, I noticed that right after downloading it some time ago. But unlike GV, We Three Kings wasn't a single, right? As I recall, this thing was checked only in case of the singles, e.g. if it's too long for radio stations etc., record company workers would edit it a bit & cut a dozen of seconds. "Satisfaction" is 3:45 minutes, if I recall correctly. Was that edited for radio play, too? Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Sheriff John Stone on November 12, 2012, 03:36:31 PM So I got out The Beach Boys' Christmas Album for the season...Brian has a couple of leads, Mike has a couple of leads, Brian gave Al a lead vocal, and he gave Dennis "a part" on "Auld Lang Syne". But, why no Carl Wilson?
Two questions...Why didn't Carl get a lead vocal on the Christmas Album? Brian's vocal on "Frosty The Snowman" almost sounds like Carl; he could've handled that one. But, the bigger question. Why did Brian wait so long to give Carl opportunities on lead vocals? Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Carl was still really young - maybe Brian didn't think he was ready to sing lead, or maybe Carl just didn't want to. Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Lowbacca on November 12, 2012, 11:45:32 PM Why did Brian wait so long to give Carl opportunities on lead vocals? "Pom Pom Play Girl" (recorded early 1964) - people tend to forget that one. :-\But yeah, I have been asking myself the same thing now and then. I guess Carl wasn't that confident yet. Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Myk Luhv on November 14, 2012, 12:24:04 AM I've no sources but I remember reading somewhere that Carl didn't sing on anything previous to "Pom Pom Play Girl" and very little else until Pet Sounds because he fancied himself more the guitarist than a singer and wanted to focus on that instead.
Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Sheriff John Stone on November 16, 2012, 10:03:00 AM I suppose Carl could've had some confidence problems early on. What was he at the time of the Christmas Album, 16 or 17? On the other hand, he was singing/performing regularly in front of thousands of people. I mean, we're talking about singing "Frosty The Snowman", not "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times".

I don't necessarily think Carl had confidence problems with his singing. By saying "I suppose...", I was just trying to be agreeable with the other posts. :) Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: lance on November 19, 2012, 10:41:51 PM I thought Al sang What'd I say....Anyway,, my thought that Carl was always enamored of being 'lead guitarist' and that's what he wanted; and that's why he didn't have many leads in the beginning.
Title: Re: Is Little Saint Nick underrated? Of course you silly elf! Post by: Aegir on November 20, 2012, 05:16:25 PM What'd I Say doesn't even sound like the Beach Boys to me. I'm sure there's some sort of evidence to back it up, but the singer doesn't sound like any one Beach Boy to me and the instrumentation (most obviously the sax) sounds far too skilled to be the Beach Boys.

I agree with you on the sax, as Mike never put a lot of effort into that. But the other instruments? Come on! They really were that good! As for the vocals - for a long time I too thought it was Al. Now I'm pretty sure it's Carl in Wild Honey mode with a younger voice (obviously, as the recording was more than three years earlier). Mike's and Brian's voices can be heard in between. |
