Title: Sandy
Post by: FatherOfTheMan Sr101 on October 28, 2012, 07:04:39 PM
Hey guys, I'm in the area about to be hit by Sandy... if anyone here is in NYC or NJ, my prayers go out to you, I'm lucky to be further north where I'm a bit safer...

Best of luck tomorrow and tuesday (hopefully no longer!)

Hurricanes definitely should not have first names....

I'm in PA, and we're scheduled to get hit tomorrow night or so, but you can never really trust the bump forecasters (who seem to always be having a field day in times like these)...

Best of luck to all other east coasters and their families. Good day to stay inside and listen to The Beach Boys.

I live in North Jersey. I'm not really worrying about the wind blowing my house away or anything but I'm sure the roads will be bad. bad storms are always annoying for me because I live alone and a half hour drive away from most people I know. I'm probably gonna end up spending multiple days with absolutely no human interaction.

Sandy, baby...it's time we said goodbye.

Sorry, I had to do it.

Best of luck to everyone on the East Coast. If you're near the beaches...get out. Seriously.

Ego, FOTM & everyone else on the east coast, I wish u the best.

I'm in NYC, not too far from a few evacuation zones. Apparently the area I'm in is high enough as to not get flooded. Stocked up on water and snacks. I'm just hoping we don't lose power!

I'm up in the Adirondacks-northern NY...not exactly a flood zone, but there is a potential for rivers to take bridges out...crossing my fingers it misses us; actually hope it misses everyone. We don't really need another Irene.

You'll never believe this: I HAVE SCHOOL TODAY.

Every other school is canceled. I know the superintendent kinda well, and I'm
Very disappointed in him... I'm sure we'll both be upset with our decisions later today...

They closed all the schools/some businesses in my area, yet there is virtually no wind and barely any rain coming down right now. If I lived anywhere near the coast in NJ or NY I'd stay home from work/school today. But further inland it is probably safe for a while.

The derecho that hit the East Coast a few months ago was damn annoying (nearly 3 days without power for me, weeks for others) - and this storm promises to be much worse ugh. I hope everyone in the path of this storm stays safe!

Because I'm a moron, I went out to go grab a couple food items - I didn't really need them, but just to be safe, y'know....I pulled into the parking lot, and BAM! a flyaway cart nails my passenger side mirror. Hanging by the wires. Gonna cost $200 to replace.

I'm staying in - lesson learned!

I have such a deep hatred for the lazy ass people who can't walk the extra 10 feet to put their cart in the cart-holding area(s)....I've seen stuff like this ^ happen needlessly far too often. Sorry to hear this happened!

As George Costanza would say "You know we're living in a society here!"
_____

The wind is starting to pick up here (in Virginia) but nothing tremendous yet. Watching the weather reports for NY and NJ now - yikes!

In Southern NJ here. It's getting pretty bad now. About another 14 hours to go. To everyone here who lives in Sandy's path, I hope you ride her out safely.

I'm safely nestled in the mountains (only lost power for about five minutes), but these two pictures were taken about a block away from my family's summer home in Ocean County NJ. I think we might be in for some major property damage.

It sounds like your superintendent doesn't worry about the students' (& his own, as I see) safety. Generally, you shouldn't have gone to the school today.

True, to be fair there's no rain or wind yet... but who knows about tomorrow...

I'm in Jersey City and the height of the storm is happening now. The winds are strong and scary. I live in a brick apartment building and yet it's still creaking. I feel very blessed to be on the fourth floor and not right in a flood zone--the waters are already washing up on the banks and it's still an hour until high tide. Haven't lost power yet, but I'm sure I will.

Stay safe, everyone.

Honestly, I can't believe we haven't been hit yet :/

Ugh, good luck!

Power is flickering here, winds are starting to really pick up. Not looking forward to this night.

Looks like the worst is over. Just got internet back but no outages. Fallen branches here and there but nothing too serious (at least from where I am). The rest of the town is still out of power though.

All good here. Scary ass winds last night, but that's about it. I'm in Queens. Lower Manhattan, Long Island, Staten Island & New Jersey got the worst of it apparently. Subways are flooded, and a ton of people are without power. My prayers to all who've been affected.

I got through Sandy unscathed. The winds were wild. Some of the 55 mph gusts sounded like a freight train. Luckily, we did not lose electricity, just a tree in the yard. My thoughts are with those who live on the barrier islands. In Atlantic City, 85% of the city is still underwater.

Same here. The wind gusts were so powerful that I thought the bedroom window was going to shatter. Fortunately the power never went out, though there's debris all over the driveway/yard however.

I hope you guys up North are all ok. The footage I saw this morning was unbelievable.

We were preparing for the worst up here in the northern part of NY state, but luckily all we got were some heavy winds and minor rainfall. I hope all of our SS.net people from downstate, NYC, LI, Jersey, Conn., RI, NH, Maine, Mass/Boston, DE/Maryland/DC area, etc. are still alive and doing OK.

I've been out of power, electricity, hot water etc since Monday night - checking in here from college campus. My basement flooded, no power to suck the water up. Hopefully getting some help today. I smell and I need a hot shower :)

Sunny down snuff though, I'm alright.

Does your campus have a rec center with power? You could go shower there. I get contracted to teach at different colleges in the Midwest and even small schools usually have towels, soap, shampoo and hair dryers already in their locker rooms. Your tuition dollars at work!

I was lucky. I lost power at about 9:30 on Monday night and it came back on about 1:30 am on Wednesday. Also lost cell phone service ("emergency calls only") and could not call my family or call in to work. But that was the worst of it for me. I had hot water the whole time. A lot of northern NJ flooded and many, many people still don't have power.

I did think about that - but felt a little awkward. I actually took a cold shower last night - so I'm clean! Got the water and wet rugs out of my basement, too.
Not estimated to have power until Sunday night or Monday. Gonna be a loooong weekend. Maybe I'll catch a movie...or two...or six.

Yea the hurricane hit hard over here, I also live in New York, All I gotta say is its very devastating, I had have my power go on and off, the night after the storm it was out for about from 10-6 in the morning and then again the next day for about two hours, it was a terrible experience.  I know people who've lost there homes, valuable items, and about 30 people have passed away, i've seen nothing like it and I hope i never have to see anything like it again, and also The Jersey Shore and Seaside have been destroyed, it's just terrible.

Just got power back - been out since Monday night. Tree fell on the neighbors house, another one in front of my driveway, still another downed the power lines. We handled the neighbor and the driveway ourselves Tuesday morning, but had to wait until today for the one on the power lines. A nice crew of guys from southern Illinois came out and dealt with that. Got off much easier than the coastal towns and barrier islands. Most of the places I spent my childhood summers seem to be completely destroyed. Still not sure when I will be back to work. The kids are thrilled about the extra week off of school, though.

RR, my friend in Mass. just complained of a powercut on the night it hit so I think Aegir will be fine
