Title: Goin' Home vs. Goin' Home
Post by: seltaeb1012002 on October 27, 2012, 10:04:01 PM
Which version do you prefer? The Paley sessions version, or the re-write for TLOS?

Can't stand the song on TLOS.

I think it works well where it is sequenced on TLOS - as far away from Morning Beat as possible (almost), because they are really similar and in the same groove.

I'm not absolute about this, but I'm pretty sure it's not a re-write. I know the first line basically sounds the same, but I'm pretty sure otherwise the songs have nothing to do with each other.

The paley version has that change that I like thats missing fron TLOS..so I like it slightly better.

TLOS
The cowboy stuff on the 1995 isn't my taste. I don't think they are the same song exactily though yes the first verse had to of inspired the 2008.

I wouldn't be surprised if both versions started out with Brian singing "I'm Goin Home!" over the Shortenin Bread riff on loop to his respective collaborators, and then from there Andy & Scott took the songs where they felt they should go.

Andy was like hell no dude, no Shortenin Bread on our soon to be unreleased album. We're turning this into some cowboy shizz

Scott was like.. Shortenin Bread it is sir!

Agreed. If I had to choose, I'd also go with the Paley version. The B section is incredible. Great chords, and the sound effects add a nice emotion to it. I could hear Carl singing the hell out of that version.

Btw, both versions also share the "tag", kinda.

It's not my favorite song on TLOS but I think it has it's moments, I especially love the "At 25, I turned out the light..." part.  The Paley version sounds a little too unfinished to me and I'm going to assume it was.

And the vocals by the band are fantastic in my opinion.  But I do agree that it fits better as part of the album than on its own.

Paley sound unfinished. TLOS is better; but I agree that it's not the best song on that album, it works where it is and I don't dislike it.

I concur with everything you said.
