Title: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: Freddie French-Pounce on October 19, 2012, 03:00:13 PM the emotional capabilities of the boys (but mainly Brian) are what, most of the time, make The Beach boys my favourite band, but this is down to the sheer variety of songs in this category. From Please let me Wonder to Cuddle Up to 90% of Pet Sounds, there is something for every emotional situation - but which do you think captures it perfectly every time it's right?
For me, I've been torn between Please Let Me Wonder and Cuddle Up for a while now. While Please Let Me Wonder is the most relateable 90% of the time, Cuddle Up is the dream come true - emotional perfection in song. Or it's just Dennis' voice... (This appears to have come under the category of my poorly formulated question posts - they have to come every now and then!) Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Seriously though...All I Wanna Do. It just knocks me out every time I listen to it. Aural perfection. Michael's finest lead. Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: buddhahat on October 19, 2012, 03:16:29 PM Great thread idea!
I was just posting about emotion in the smile/Pet sounds poll. I would probably say Don't Talk or one of those 66/67 tracks where he has those descending chord runs. The Don't Talk demo is pretty much the most moving piece of music by anyone - He doesn't even need the whole string arrangement to communicate his feelings any more effectively than he does with that demo. Post by: Jason on October 19, 2012, 04:14:04 PM The Beach Boys always had that little knack for imparting powerful emotions onto the listener. Brian was a master of doing it with little sounds, like the "heart beat" bassline in Don't Talk, or Carl's breathy "I love you" in Please Let Me Wonder.
These guys are the fucking greatest band in history... Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: Alex on October 19, 2012, 04:34:19 PM All I Want to Do

Post by: Amanda Hart on October 19, 2012, 05:29:01 PM The Beach Boys always had that little knack for imparting powerful emotions onto the listener. Brian was a master of doing it with little sounds, like the "heart beat" bassline in Don't Talk, or Carl's breathy "I love you" in Please Let Me Wonder. These guys are the f***ing greatest band in history... Totally, and that list could go on forever. The care put into the tracks shows how invested they, especially Brian, were emotionally. I can't pick which one song is the most emotionally powerful because there are so many songs across the catalog that cover such a wide range of emotions and do it so well. Better than any other musical act I'm familiar with. Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: AndrewHickey on October 19, 2012, 06:19:34 PM Still I Dream Of It. The only Beach Boys song I've seen non-fans cry at (my wife, first time she heard it, and a friend when watching Ed Harcourt play it supporting Van Dyke Parks last year).

Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: Ovi on October 19, 2012, 11:43:59 PM It's gotta be 'Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)' especially when Brian sings "let's not think about tomorrow". Can't remember how many times I've burst into tears at that particular moment.

Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: sheknowsmetoowell on October 20, 2012, 10:37:59 AM I don't know why this hasn't been mentioned yet (I have a feeling that a majority of the board doesn't like this song), but I'd personally have to say Make It Good. The opening bars give me the same feeling as the opening bars to Day In The Life Of A Tree. As far as emotionally powerful goes, I'd have to say the ending takes the cake, especially the whole build-up:
All of my life, I haven't known much, All I know is what I feel. And what I feel. And what I feel. LLLLLLOOOOOOVVVVVEEEEE I'm in love Love Love, ooh This came on in the car a few weeks ago when my girlfriend and I were going through some difficult times, we both started balling our eyes out during that part of the song. Other runner-ups: Don't Talk, or She Knows Me. Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: Myk Luhv on October 20, 2012, 10:40:26 AM The second solo Brian piano demo of "It's Over Now". It's better than "Still I Dream Of It".
Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: phirnis on October 20, 2012, 11:18:05 AM I agree with almost all of the above and have to throw in both "My Diane" and "I Wanna Pick You Up".
Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: Paulos on October 20, 2012, 11:27:49 AM Cuddle Up
God Only Knows Pacific Coast Highway Farewell My Friend Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: MaxL on October 20, 2012, 11:40:53 AM Summer's Gone - hearing it at Wembley just brought me to tears. Right before the Dennis & Carl tributes too, so I was a wreck.
And My Diane has a certain cathartic edge to it. Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: Jukka on October 20, 2012, 12:52:38 PM Big Sur conjures the feeling of "hey, everything's alright, things ain't so bad after all"
better than any other track. Makes you realize world is a nice place after all, and it's an important realization. Same goes for California. Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: sockittome on October 20, 2012, 01:06:51 PM I haven't seen Forever listed anywhere...or did I miss it. That would be #1 on my list....or pretty close to the top.
Also, as mentioned earlier: Warmth of the Sun All I Wanna do (emphasis is there for clarity) God Only Knows Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: Jim V. on October 20, 2012, 01:34:59 PM Hmmm. Emotionally powerful....
Probably have to go with "Summer's Gone". I honestly don't like to listen to this one very often because of how sad it is. Otherwise, I'd throw in "Surf's Up", "'Til I Die", "Don't Talk", and "Lonely Sea". Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: Moz from Oz on October 21, 2012, 03:43:34 AM For pure heartfelt emotion , Baby Blue, Only With You and Forever do it for me. Always makes me think of Mrs Moz from Oz. But a powerful emotion hit during the reunion shows I saw. Watching Brian sing IJWMFTT and with Al responding on the tag "He just wasn't made for these times" was a moment that hit the spot

I pity the fool who dismisses the surfing songs. Yes, what an incredible song! Always baffled me that this wasn't even a single (until the mid-70s, that is). "Get yourself a big board/But don't you treat it like a toy!" - That's always been my favorite part, early Beach Boys at their most overwhelmingly powerful! Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: Junebug on October 21, 2012, 12:20:22 PM Lets Put Our Hearts Together

'Til I Die God Only Knows In My Room Don't Worry Baby Forever Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: Micha on October 25, 2012, 08:39:18 PM I find it interesting that no SMiLE songs are mentioned here except one "Surf's Up amongst others". I expected half of the entries to be "Surf's Up" and another quarter other SMiLE songs. I'm delighted to see more than one mention of "Summer's Gone" which I love too.
To me the most emotional ones are "God Only Knows" (especially the tag), and the organ solo in "Wendy" which always gives me gooseflesh. Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: donald on October 26, 2012, 01:09:24 PM A lot of their songs have a strong emotional pull. Some are pure Joy, and some are exquisitely sad and wistful.
I don't think many other artists have touched both emotional poles so many times over a career...right up to and including the new album. And often as not, it is the melody as much as the lyrics. Summers Gone, for example. Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: Phoenix on October 26, 2012, 06:37:08 PM "Don't Worry Baby" is second favorite BB song, just behind "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and I'm not nearly a fan of Dennis's stuf as a lot of people on this bored but as far as "emotionally powerful", I'd put "4th Of July" over even DWB and pretty darn near the top of the list.
Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: Margarita on October 26, 2012, 06:48:40 PM I agree with every song that has been posted here, and have a few more to add:
Kiss Me Baby - tell me that "And I wondered, as it got light, were you still awake like me?" doesn't hit you in the gut every time. From There to Back Again - "Why don't you run away and spend some time with me/On this summer's day, there's nowhere else I'd rather be" - Pet Sounds level of longing That's Not Me - "I miss my pad and the places I've known, and every night as I lay there alone I would dream" Here Today - "Well, you know I hate to be a downer, but I'm the guy she left before you found her" And if Brian solo songs count...Midnight's Another Day - "All these people, they made me feel so alone" - heard that song twice in concert and sobbed through it both times. Hearing it live is even more devastating than the recorded version. Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: lee on October 26, 2012, 06:57:33 PM Please Let Me Wonder
All I Wanna Do Barbara Don't Talk Our Sweet Love Title: Re: Which song is their most emotionally powerful? Post by: Letsgoawayforawhile on October 27, 2012, 07:29:19 AM Mount Vernon and Fairway Theme
Brian being on the cusp of madness, so frail, and fragile. It really shows here to me. The piano is so gorgeous, and sad. Longing for something.
