Title: Trippin off of the s*it that had Brian Wilson flippin..

(listen at :50) I just checked a out a rapper my girlfriend introduced me to and surprisingly in one of his lines he mentions Brian Wilson. (What a coincidence)

How known was Brian's drug problem and mental breakdown? Did any of you know of this back in the day? (My father knew about it and told me after Pet Sounds he didn't hear much of the Beach Boys and thought they retired.)
Did any of big names in the industry ever talk about it? (It's such a sad situation, I'm happy see that Brian is in a happier place these days.)

Try doing a little very basic research first - like reading a book or two - and then consider if this question is worth asking for any purpose except to see your name on a screen.

Yowch!

I thought Newguy's threads were generally well received here. It's a legitimate question he's asking and might be interesting to hear the older fans' personal takes on how aware they were of Brian's mental state at the time.

Plus the hip hop reference is cool. New sig there, ta very much!

Someone does some basic research, or at least shows signs of trying, I have time for them. Anyone who just shows up and asks to be spoon-fed information that's easily found either online or in assorted books over the years, I don't. Brian's mental problems have been well documented, going back to 1971 and the Nolan articles, if not before (although not so openly). Just show a little effort. Is that much to ask ? In some cases, apparently so.

I see where you're coming from, but love it or hate it message boards are convenient sources of info these days. I'm sure most of us are guilty of eschewing the book case for Smileysmile.net when we have a nagging question we want answered (or maybe I'm lazier than most here). It's not as if he's asking when Carl was born, or the name of Brian's first wife or something.

Also the following questions in the op show potential for interesting discussion and therefore worthy of a new thread, imo:

Did any of you know of this back in the day?

Did any of big names in the industry ever talk about it?

Yet you've still got time to post a sh*tty dig.

Be honest, you just enjoy being a grumpy forum big shot who never misses an opportunity to remind lesser mortals that you've dedicated your entire adult life to obsessing over the minutiae of a pop band.

If other people want to ask questions you consider beneath you, then live and let live. Ignore it. See also Phil Cohen. Let someone else answer instead of just being unpleasant. If this were my forum I'd have banned you ages ago. Absolutely zero respect for anyone else.

There's some Xzibit track on YouTube where he raps over "Good Vibrations" samples, and EPMD sampled "Help Me Rhonda" in one of their songs too. It's uncommon, sure, but not completely mind-blowing.

Nobody demanded anything.  The guy just asked s simple question that he figured someone here could answer.  Not everyone has all the books or videos at hand or the time to scroll through endless on-line sites, articles, etc.  If you don't have time to answer, don't take more time writing a cranky response. Just leave it alone.

Yeah, but hip hop is not exactly the first genre of music I'd think of that were heavily influenced by the Beach Boys.  So the fact that a Brian Wilson reference found its way on a rap song is rather remarkable.

Got that right.. ;D I hope it continues I want more artists from different genres to recognize Brian was the genius he is.
I was also shocked when Daft Punk mentioned their first name for the group was Darlin ' which they named after The Beach Boy's song Darlin' from the album Wild Honey.

Hip-Hop is sort of a producer's art, right ? Well it's only to be expected then, A Bri Drop. Every record producer I've ever known (or have known of) will name check Brian Wilson or Phil Spector at some point. Though, it's never a good idea to converse with a Bri/Phil name dropper. They sometimes seem to have no interest in actually appreciating the work, or studying it to the point of absorption.

Call me once somebody raps about Al Jardine. He wasn't a producer, and he kept it clean. Not so interesting !

There should be an mixtape by a rapper that samples nothing but the beach boys. I'd love to hear those soft harmonies in the background as a rapper cleverly lace the track with smooth lyrics.
At first I thought this was a Beach Boys sample..check it out you guys and tell me what you think..

them a new, unexpected aesthetic. I want it to be a means for many to prick their ears up
about an often overlooked larger body of work from one of music’s most interesting groups,
as well as a means for the long time fans with open minds to hear re-imagined versions of
beloved songs.

There should be an mixtape by a rapper that samples nothing but the beach boys. I'd love to hear those soft harmonies in the background as a rapper cleverly lace the track with smooth lyrics.
At first I thought this was a Beach Boys sample..check it out you guys and tell me what you think..

There is. It's called "In the key of dee" and it samples the entire Pet Sounds album. It's incredible.

Brian Wilson is from The Beach Boys.

The Beach Boys are one of the biggest bands of all time.

It's not that surprising

Yeah, but hip hop is not exactly the first genre of music I'd think of that were heavily influenced by the Beach Boys.  So the fact that a Brian Wilson reference found its way on a rap song is rather remarkable.

Well we might not have Kanye West sampling The Beach Boys but we do have the Insane Clown Posse

Thanks NewGuy, I appreciate your kind words man.  In regards to your suggestions to work with Caroline No, Surf's Up and The Night Was So Young...

I for the most part tried to steer clear of Pet Sounds, as Buillon had already done an exceptional job with his project Pet Sounds in the Key of Dee.  However, I did work with some pieces of music he didn't utilize when it came to Pet Sounds.  Thin Air on Adieu or Die utilizes a Pet Sounds medley The First Edition did, available on Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3q4Dm8ixBws

Here's Thin Air - http://soundcloud.com/willcmusic/thin-air (http://soundcloud.com/willcmusic/thin-air)

Meanwhile, 30 Days Later utilizes the vocals to I Just Wasn't Made For These Times, married to a sample of a South American LP from 1978. Here's 30 Days Later - http://soundcloud.com/willcmusic/30-days-later (http://soundcloud.com/willcmusic/30-days-later)

Surf's Up was given a go here - http://soundcloud.com/willcmusic/neon-bygones (http://soundcloud.com/willcmusic/neon-bygones)

The Night Was So Young, a song I truly adore, was given a shot, but it didn't make the final cut.  Instead Airplane from Love You was chopped up on "747" - http://soundcloud.com/willcmusic/747-1 (http://soundcloud.com/willcmusic/747-1)

Man you seriously have talent the only thing I noticed about your instrumentals that I wasn't too fond of is that some of them (3 of them) have the same sound/flow with no major changes throughout the song except for the bits of talking in the intro or outro.(Unlike with Neon Bygones with had many different parts of Surf's Up to it.) (Which I absolutely love!!) You should change it a bit in the middle of the song by adding another one of their songs in the mix like that suite of whatever that group's name was performing it.
It's a beautiful thing to come across two great genres (that you wouldn't expect to ever parallel) and see them blended in one for a minute or two and your instrumentals is a product of it and I enjoyed it..(The way you added Nas in the Neon Bygones..it was ehhhh just felt totally out of place.) Man Brian's Epiphany/At the Roller Rink sounds so amazing...I really appreciate how you added the clips of the commentary to each track it adds even more life to them.
The way they were talking about Brian in his room away from the world in Seasons Ending is so sad but the music sounds so good that it doesn't make me feel bad it's just so chill.

EVERYBODY

KEEP CALM AND CLICK THIS (http://kidbleach.com/)
Wow! What a lovely collection of pictures! The cats & kittens are so-so cute & eye-catching! I just love these animals!
Down to the nitty-gritty. Good topic, Newguy! Although I didn't like the 1st song you originally posted and remix of WIBN, the other ones were cool. As Awesoman, I'm quite surprised to hear some of The BBs songs (+ Brian Wilson himself) being referred in hip-hop, rap and such, even if it's one of the biggest bands in the world. From time to time I like to listen to these styles of music but I never heard any of the suggested bands. Btw, I liked the 2 Insane Clown Posse remixes, esp. my fave Barnyard, or as it's called there - Out In the Barn Yard. Sounded like some words were added. Quite groovy. GOK is neat as well. I liked gospel touch in this one, impressive vocals. Generally, I'm familiar with "In The Key of Dee", and imo the IKTAA track is dreadful.

2Will C: that was something! Terrific mixing job! Thanks for the download link! The videos are great & most of the footage is new to me. That'll be yet another addition to my collection.
I was blown away (Brian voice) when I heard how he referenced Brian's drug problem on his song not many artists like to touch on that subject.
