Title: Brian Wilson - Live 1996 @ Will Geer Theater, Topanga Canyon, CA
Post by: seltaeb1012002 on October 01, 2012, 08:21:59 PM
Hey all,

So, 5 years after moving into my apartment, I finally got around to building some shelves & unpacking my CD/video collection. Some of these CDs have been boxed up for close to 10 years, and I gotta say I was pretty surprised at what I found.

Here's one cool clip. If anyone has any more info on this one it would definitely be appreciated. Mods, feel free to scoot this one over into the media section. Just wanted to be able to share it with every1 here without it getting buried.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4-gJfKGX34

Enjoy!

PS - Next up.. Mike Love on Howard Stern!

I've never actually heard this before... Who was the personnel for this? Was it just Brian himself?

edit

He sure seems more 'with it' back then...and this was in 1996. Compare this to 2 years later at Farm Aid, or his solo tour 3 years later. He sounds a bit different vocally too. He's all over the place, but he seems more energetic. WTF happened?!

Wow, good point. Definitely more slurring & whatnot going on in '98. Hmm.

Thanks, seltaeb, that was a helluva lotta fun. Just what was Brian saying about Mike? A "borderline case"??  :-D

Haha, took me a minute to get that joke. Dude was on that night!

Thinking about what Pope Myke said, I bet it's the nervous energy that's driving him here, in front of so many people with just him and the piano. I wonder if he'd be up for doing something like this again sometime...

In 99, he started playing two-hour plus shows. Different kind of thing than banging out a few numbers on the piano.

I like the video effects. ^_^

Thanks for the upload! Very interesting show, indeed.

Change in meds. Less hyper after '96.

Nice to hear modern Brian really, really "go for it" during a performance. The ride is a little bumpy but pretty enjoyable overall.

He's doing the falsetto in "Do It Again"! And hitting like 95% of the notes! I'll be damned.

Yeah, but was referring to his speech and energy level being better than just a year later, which was two years before his first real solo show

SaltAbe, any chance we could get a lossless upload anywhurr?

Holy f***, he also did the higher "Oh Caroline, no" falsetto and, again, did it pretty darn well. He's just dicking around throughout this whole thing, but again, it's nice to hear him go all out like this.

Also, holy sh*t it's manlady-sounding KCRW DJ Chris Douridas.

What the good hell what it doo to doo dooooo????

Yeah for sure. I mean, the quality's not THAT much better. Pretty solid for an audience tape tho.

No rush/pressure ^_^ just nice to see this sort of stuff preserved in its original quality. Often times, five years later, the original is impossible to find and you're stuck with whatever third transcode of a fan "remaster" that you can find.

Thanks for this! The funniest I've ever heard him since this 60s. Must have been a riot to be in that audience.

Glad everyone's enjoying it. It's funny, you take this stuff for granted as a kid. Hearing it back now is pretty fascinating.

Very true. All of the stuff I have is sourced directly from cassette trades from the late 90's / early 00's. I must've gotten this one only a few years after it took place. When I was in high school collecting all of this stuff, I had enough time on my hands & fortunately some good sense to transfer almost everything to CD. Ended up "losing" all of my cassettes & my 45 collection soon after my parents split :( BUT.. I found tons of concerts / interviews that I haven't seen pop up in the mp3/youtube-trade age yet. I feel happy just to have access to my original SOT CDs again after working with the 128kpbs mp3 rips floating around for all of my fan mixes.. yikes.

Here's the .wav file of this show:  http://www.sendspace.com/file/xp9n1m

Working on finding a good picture for the ML / Stern show and will upload today. That interview is something else. Came to a few conclusions after hearing that one again...especially in light of all the ML bashing/analyzing going on lately.

I actually have this on video. It's on VHS - recorded by a guy in the audience. I'd upload it if I knew how.

Man, it's funny. I thought there might've been a video for this one. But I wasn't sure if I was confusing this one with the '90 BB's fan convention.

Would definitely appreciate an upload if possible!

I believe, at least according to this article, http://articles.latimes.com/1998/may/14/entertainment/ca-49446  that it was actually 1998.  I have the original flyer somewhere in my files, as well as photos that I shot that day.

From the article: "The Theatricum presented its first songwriters' symposium two years ago. That one featured Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Brian Wilson, Parks, Rickie Lee Jones and others, and raised money to improve seating at the outdoor amphitheater."

So I believe the one at which Brian performed was the one in 1996. (sorry, Ed)

The best solo career-era live vocals I have ever heard from Brian were at the China Club gig in 1991.

His voice sounds great here! Pitch is very solid and range is strong. Love the messed up improv on God Only Knows' last chorus.
Thanks for posting!!!!

I was at this show! It was an early b-day present from my then-wife.

Brian was pretty good at this, if--yes--mostly dicking around. "It's the wrong foda-ing words!" He didn't sing OCA with Van, sadly, and it seemed that there was still some tension between them around this time. Van sounded very guilty about having abandoned SMiLE, and he also told an apocryphal story about being in a gay bar with, I believe, Ry Cooder.

Rickie Lee Jones sang a very sweet singalong of "Don't Worry Baby" to Brian at one point.

As I went down to the outhouse at one point, I caught Brian leaving from there!

Wow, that was quite a revelation to listen to.  It's great hearing him so animated, although I suspect that, behind closed doors and in a comfortable setting, he's probably still like that to some degree even today.

His voice was so fantastic on this too, it's great hearing him nail the falsetto on "Do It Again."

It was during the afternoon, actually. Lovely, sunny day. (For those of you who dig old LA, it was also the last day CC Brown's on Hollywood Boulevard was operating...missed that for this. Wanted both!)

Here's my journal page for that day--not sure who took the photos:

Yeah, if anybody remembers who shot the pix, I would love to give credit.

More details: Chris Douridas was the host that day, and other guests included Billy Swan, and Stan Ridgway--who did some weird song about a roadside killing or something, that made Brian's eyes get very wide and freaked-out looking.

I was hanging around outside before the show when Brian was doing his soundcheck and his voice was just BOOMING. So powerful!

Brian was c*cky as hell on that tape, and the way he sang was just totally different from what I even heard live on his first comeback tour a few years later. The question becomes, what exactly happened in the meantime?

Listen to the way he sang "Be My Baby", and I'm saying listen very close to the way he phrases the lead vocal. Not only does he sing the notes, but he manages to match that uniquely weird vibrato technique of Ronnie Spector's voice, and that vibrato is not at all what Brian himself used or uses on lead vocals. In fact I've heard him do that tune in person several times and he didn't try to match Ronnie's voice anywhere near what he did at this performance. And he did that voice almost note-perfect...pretty amazing.

I think like other tapes of this sort, what we hear manages to shatter a lot of preconceived notions of what was actually going on outside of the few public hours of these people's lives which we have heard in the way of films or interviews.

The pix and the video were taken by Joanne Pollack and her husband Bob. Joanne used to be a fixture in the old Wheeler chat room.
