Title: The Beach Boys Deluxe Set Post by: SMiLE Brian on September 28, 2012, 05:41:12 PM Just picked up this great deal. I got Today, Summer Days, and Pet Sounds in one package in glorious Mono sound. Avoid the Duophonic copies at all cost.
Title: Re: The Beach Boys Deluxe Set Post by: Mikie on September 28, 2012, 06:06:41 PM Did you get an original Capitol TCL 2813 from 1967? That's the mono. The stereo (Duophonic) is Capitol DTCL 2813. Collectors usually want copies of the mono and stereo versions of the box. Some copies have a blue spine and some have a purple one. I have both - seems like I've seen far less of them with the blue spine.
I had Brian sign mine in his house. He said, "You like that one"? I said, "Yeah, this has 3 of your best albums in here". He replied, "Yeah!!" Title: Re: The Beach Boys Deluxe Set Post by: SMiLE Brian on September 28, 2012, 06:10:02 PM I got the TCL 2813 from 1967. Great Brian story Mikie! 8)

They're ain't no Blue spines. Never was. If you've got a Blue one let's see a picture. ( and none of this "my albums are all stored away and I can't get to them" drivel) Put it up , brother! This is about the third time I've seen you spell "a lot" as alot on this board. Remember, there's no such word as "alot" - at least in the English dictionaries that I've referenced. If you really knew your Beach Boys vinyl, then you'd know that there IS a Beach Boys Deluxe Set with a blue bordered spine. It's the Capitol Record Club edition, DTCL-8-2813. Title: Re: The Beach Boys Deluxe Set Post by: Aegir on September 28, 2012, 11:52:44 PM Man, you're acting crazy. Calling me out for "mak[ing] snide comments to people", when you just posted three separate posts, all for the purpose of being mean to bgas, just because he didn't know some of these albums had a blue spine?
Yeah, I noticed that people ignore a lot of what I post, but they ignore the things that aren't even reactionary. Two recent examples, things like "I wish John Cowsill had played on more songs on the album." or "My relationship with listening to the Beach Boys is any track can jump out at me at any specific moment. I don't have a specific song that always hits me the same way. It's always something new." That could not even conceivably be construed as me trying to get attention and making snide comments. But whatever. I don't have a lot of friends in real life, either. Just checked my vinyl and I have one stereo Deluxe Set (maroon border) and one mono copy (black border). And last night I confirmed from my collector friend from Evansville that he indeed has a Beach Boys Deluxe Set with a blue border. But I didn't really have to ask him because I was with him when he found it in a record store in L.A. in the 70's! Little factoid for ya. Deluxe sets with blue borders exist! A quick Google search reveals this: This guy's record database shows that he has one: http://baseportal.com/cgi-bin/baseportal.pl?htx=/VinylCatalogue/main&localparams=1&range=2540,20 And this Deluxe Set with a blue border is/was for sale for 150 bucks: http://books.google.com/books?id=XUI1R7jJz2YC&pg=PA101&lpg=PA101&dq=Beach+Boys+deluxe+set+blue+border&source=bl&ots=YOkNrV-76u&sig=eF7F7S0NLF0lmTBmJN3MiLKC8i8&hl=en&sa=X&ei=nA9nUIL_FYbmigKYi4GIAQ&ved=0CB0Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=Beach%20Boys%20deluxe%20set%20blue%20border&f=false And what's the "Crooks book" that you refer to? Are you by chance talking about Osborne's Price Guide? I don't even know where my copies are - haven't looked at them in many years. YEAh yeah yeah. you SAY you were were with him. you SAY he has a copy. But I dont see any evidence. where's the pictures? Let me guess, He's not on the internet, right? Or maybe he doesn't know where all of his copies are either! You probably need to go back to school and take alot of "reading for comprehension" classes! the "record database" shows estimated prices, low and high, for all the records this person ( deceased) was able to compile, but nowhere does it state that he actually owns them, which of course , would be tuff as he's deceased. . the "listing" you SAY was for sale, is only pages from "Goldmine Standard Catalog of American Records 1948-1991 By Martin Popoff " It's a friggin price Guide Mikie! So, since you don't seem to be paying alot of attention here, I'll say it again: BLUE SPINES DON'T EXIST. Unless of course, your friend wants to take some photos and post them. Tell ya what, I'll start holding my breath as soon as I hit "post" and then we can compare shades of Blue, when "your friend" puts up. Or PM me his name/number, so I can get his address and best time for a visit! I'll drive there! It'll be worth it to see the only "known" existing BLUE BORDER Beach Boys Deluxe Set Title: Re: The Beach Boys Deluxe Set Post by: Mikie on September 29, 2012, 12:21:39 PM Why would two different web sites (including a guy's record collection database) clearly indicate that their "Beach Boys Deluxe Set" have a blue spine? And why would the Goldmine listing list three (3) different Deluxe Sets in one spot; one with a black border, one with maroon, and one with a blue border? Just to confuse people or they're color blind or guessing from memory and don't know what they're talking about? Very much doubt that too.
What's the matter Bigass, you don't have it so it must not exist? Why would I lie to you about something like this? Why would I do that on a public message board and compromise my credibility? Stuff that's been reported ( he said/she said/ I heard joe has a copy/ my brother was talking to sam the other day when his cousin's wife came by and was showing him a picture of some record that her uncle said he thought his grandfather talked about seeing in a pawn shop one time, tho maybe it was by that other guy) BUT doesn't exist. Records that people swear are out there, that are not. There's alot of that stuff. I mean ALOT!! But no, I'm not going to site specifics for you. You'll just have to "trust" me. Cuz, Really, I believe you think you saw one. really I do. I bet each one of the Beach Boys, specifically remember alot of the details of spending the $300 and Al's mom doing it all, and god know what else. Doesn't mean it's true. Ther's alot of that going around, alot of the time It's funny that your friend has the only known copy of the blue spine, but can't supply a picture( of course you saw him buy it) How many have you seen listed for sale on Ebay, or anywhere else? ( I know how many) Who else has ever seen one? How many BBs collectors do you know that have a blue spine copy? after all, we're not speaking of a test pressing here , or an acetate. Your friend has the ONLY known copy of a Stock Capitol Beach Boys release. WOW. Now if you said it was still sealed, that would make an even better story.... All in all, it's not that I don't have a copy. there are alot of BBs variations that I don't own( tho the list of have/have not is alot smaller than it used to be) at least when talking about items I REALLY want. Still, you want me to admit youre right? SHOW ME THE BLUE SPINE!!! In fact, show me ANY Capitol Deluxe Set issue with a blue spine. The Beach Boys weren't the only one with a release by that name. Here's some to start checking( up to Capitol 3000): 1790 Rodgers and Hammerstein Deluxe Set (STCL, TCL) 2182 Apaka/[Various] The “Hawaii Calls” Deluxe Set (TCL, STCL, 2814 Frank Sinatra Deluxe Set (STFL, TFL) 2815 Dean Martin Deluxe Set (DTCL) 2816 Jackie Gleason Deluxe Set (STCL) 2942 Tenessee Ernie Ford Deluxe Set (STCL) 2952 Webley Edwards Presents The Hawaii Calls Deluxe Set (DTCL) 2988 Judy Garland Deluxe Set (STCL) 2989 Stan Kenton Deluxe Set (STCL) There are probably some other later ones, not to mention some Classical music releases. Good Luck!! report back when you find one.... |
