It was quite a shock for me when they started the tour that Surf's Up or Vega-tables wasn't in the setlists, seemed logical after the huge success of SMiLE and how well loved that song is.

I can't say I was shocked, although something else from "Smile" would have been interesting, and "Vegetables" and "Wonderful" are the only other "Smile" items that any non-Brian touring BB's-related band has done in the last 20-30 years. I suppose the London folks might get a slight more progressive setlist coming up here, although a bunch of the UK-centric hits they usually add to UK setlist are already there ("Then I Kissed Her", "Cottonfields", etc.).

Chances are slim to none, but it would be fun to see Al do "Lady Lynda"!

Back to the new video on youtube, looks like the bit of footage of "Isn't It Time" is from the 6/1 Berkeley show.

With all due respect to Jeff and Al (who would be an interesting choice for the number), my thought is "No way, brother - gimme Brian, or give me death!"

I honestly expected some more Smile material in the set list than we got and I certainly figured "Surf's Up" would feature if we were to get more of it.  I absolutely adore the song and I think it should be performed and given its due by the band.

I looked at the Show 68 setlist to see where it's at and so far to be honest, it's a pretty fair and solid setlist! it's treating most of the albums, Mike Love is doing quite a good job overall.

Ooooof course, it would be even more perfect if he could go more risky once in a while, like add a spot for 'Til I Die/Surf's Up (switch it once in a while)
put on some Love You songs (come on!) like, i don't know, at least Honkin' Down The Highway, replace it once in a while with another Al song (why not Kiss Me Baby or Then I Kissed Her) replace a song with Friends, leave Marcella, This Whole World and Darlin' for good (why not try Wild Honey too) You're So Good To me instead of Do You Wanna Dance? (i would really love that to happen actually) and maybe try Break Away instead of Rock'n'roll music (but then that was a hit, so maybe another one) anyway, some little changes like that sometimes.. but they've been really good to us so far! (tho i didn't get to see them, arrghh)

Mike's doing a sh!tty job actually. Most of the songs are pre-66. Very heavy on cars and surfing. The songs you mention wanting to hear have most likely never been considered by the Lovester for this tour. The only reason they're doing Marcella is because Brian demanded it. If only he would demand a bunch more.

What really irks me is that Mike decided to include one of his own obscure tunes in the mix, while picking most of the predictable Brian hits. I love All This Is That, but it seems like Mike wants to give the impression that he was responsible for the deeper spiritual stuff too.

Maybe I'm wrong. I truly hope they stay together, and that the setlist keeps evolving. Brian said he'd like to scare people a little. I'd like that too.  ;)

There's so many more tunes I'd like to see them at least give a try. Warmth of the Sun for one, which M&B actually do a lot don't they? I'd love to see Friends and Love You represented. They really need to do more SMiLE tunes. Maybe if they keep going they will consider doing fan-picked setlists or entire albums. How freaking cool would it be to hear these guys do Wild Honey from start to finish?

And the My Life Suite.

Well there's at least one song from Surf's Up, Holland, Smiley Smile, So Tough, Sunflower, Wild Honey, Light Album, 1985.. it's quite fair, he could be far more early-surf-fun-in-the-sun than this.

Also you have to remember that Carl and Dennis are no longer here, so sometimes it's best to let the songs they owned away.. for example, as for myself, i'd love to hear sometimes more Holland or So Tough stuff, and Love You, but man who would do all the job.. and as hard as they try and as good as they can sound sometimes, they are getting old.

It is a shame tho he didn't kept Our Prayer in the setlists, that's just something they should always be doing.

Yeah...but was a 50th Anniversary REUNION Tour really the time to spring cuts from "Love You" or "Friends" especially when there would be such an influx of "tourist"/casual concert-goers attending just to hear the bit hits?  I adore "All This Is That" but I haven't read ONE review from a show that didn't say that there was a lull in the audience when it was performed.  It's an amazing song but the crowd just doesn't know it.  One lull in the night is probably more than enough for Mike to deal with.  I can't imagine huge sections carved out for even more lesser known hits from "Friends" or "20/20" to go over the audience's head.

I fully expected this tour to be focused on the bigger picture and that's what we got.  I think Mike did a great job with the setlists.  He incorporated Al's suggestions ("California Saga" and "Our Prayer") and also gave Brian a few like "Marcella" and "Add Some Music To Your Day."  If we do get anymore tours out of them I would expect (and hope?) that the setlists would be revisited and even more obscurer songs incorporated at that point.

Some Love You tracks would have worked.  Like Honkin' Down the Highway would be a lot of fun, maybe they could have even fit that into the car medley.

Can't say I agree with this. I think the setlist on this tour has been pretty awesome. As far as the as the great, classic '70s songs that aren't played live as much, we got "This Whole World", "Good Timin'", "Marcella" and "Add Some Music To Your Day". And then we also got things like "You're So Good To Me", "Heroes And Villains", "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" and "Please Let Me Wonder". I assume the only usual SMiLE offerings being "Heroes And Villains" and "Good Vibrations" because of Brian. I'm sure if he wanted to do other stuff, they would. Same with the '70s stuff.

I mean we gotta be honest too. This is a band with a lot of hits. So they gotta play a large chunk of them. And they balanced the hits and the classic songs that weren't hits. For example, I got to see Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys perform "This Whole World", but I highly doubt I'd ever get to see Paul McCartney do "Big Barn Bed" or "That Would Be Something" or random early '70s classics. I think The Beach Boys were very good to us hardcore fans this year.

This current edition on the Beach Boys could make just about anything sound good...hell, I'd even go one better and see something like 'Big Sur' or 'Everyone's in Love with You'  go in there on the next tour (by the REAL band, of course) for a Mike spotlight. Then, during some part of the show, bust out 'That Same Song'.

But yeah, I agree with SWJ. I'm friends with a member here named 'stack-o-tracks', from a Stone Temple Pilots board named 'Below Empty'. Now STP is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their first album. Difference is? They are the equivalent of the late 80s Beach Boys (minus Kokomo) setlist wise. They have become an oldies band, and get a lot of sh*t on their message boards. In comparison, a band 30 years older is putting together a really diverse setlist....when they could have had a safe show and people still would have been just as happy.

I hate how every Beach Boys interview is for the fan who knows absolutely nothing about the band. Makes it very frustrating.

I think it would be churlish to criticize the great set lists that the band have been playing. It might have been nice if they`d playe one or two more new songs but other than that it`s been fine. It`s also been good to see that songs sung by non-Beach Boys have been kept to a minimum.

It's not just that, they also misspell "Tucson" (in the onscreen title at 00:27)
