I thought about putting this in the "insignificant questions" thread but I'm not sure if it would get answered. Very few people on here probably ever meet Dennis and even fewer knew him personally. That said, in the documentaries and books I've read about him, it seems as if he might have been a manic of some type. Here are some examples:

- going on manic sprees and an insatiable appetite for something (whether it be alcohol or sex). He would also spend money really quickly where he allegedly would kavalier-ly by a rolls royce and destroy it the next day
- inconsistent personality (he seemed to be chill and level headed at times and abrasive/destructive at others)

Of course this could all be symptoms of alcoholism (which he most def had)

ADD/ADHD

Yes.  More so than Brian.

As someone who has struggled with mental illness (mild compared to someone like Brian...but a struggle none-the-less) this thread interests me.  No, I don't think Dennis was bipolar.  Brian is, Dennis is not...but Dennis clearly had his own mental demons.  It's hard to pin-point what kind of diagnosis he would have been given had he actually been treated by a mental healthcare professional.

That doesn't mean you can't suddenly have all the knowledge that comes with working toward becoming a doctor and accurately diagnose a man who's been dead for thirty years based on some stuff you read on the internet. The same internet thing allows you to gain instant coroner skillz the moment a celebrity dies in order to make you able to accurately determine their cause of death before these other lamer non-internet coroners even make a cut. Then you can post all about it on Facebook and sh*t and all your friends can reply and spread rumors because oommgmgg

One difference between the two is that Dion was already clean before Dennis had written a decent song. I like Dennis and am respecful of his contributions to the group history. At the same time, I think that some have tended to overstate what that contribution was.

He was the only member that managed to keep writing consistently brilliant material throughout the seventies.

I think Dennis would have fallen off the rails earlier had his condition been any worse than the usual Hollywood tale of a guy who can't handle the drugs and booze freely on offer.  The worst thing he had was probably an addictive personality (not an illness per se, more of a tendency) and the common 60s syndrome of thinking women were just dolls for him to play with.

Your rebuttal was to the assertion that Dennis wrote "consistently brilliant material throughout the seventies"...there was no caveat about solo material not counting. And besides Dennis would have been happy if the Beach Boys used his material for 15 Big Ones, or MIU, or Keepin the Summer Alive...that was their choice not his. So... you're still thinking your less than 10 comment is accurate then. I just wanted to make sure you'd thought it out.

The consistently brilliant was a follow up to my statement that Dennis's contribution to the Beach Boys legacy is overstated at times. If songs were not released or on a Beach Boys album, it is hard to argue that they contributed to their legacy.  I like Dennis but for example I find his stuff on Carl and the Passions to be the weaker stuff on one of their weakest albums. I love San Miguel, 4th of July and his stuff on Sunflower. Pacific Ocean Blue is just okay for me.

Although this a sad conclusion, I tend to agree. No need to gloss over the evident fact that Dennis just couldn't say 'no'. To live in abstinence, even for a brief while. IMHO he tried all of the time to blot out the terrible abuse meted out to him by Murry, in his adult life. If he had a mental illness, it must have been post-traumatic stress disorder; not only war veterans have that.
And I am certain he suffered from strong guilt, because deep in his heart he may have hated his destructive lifestyle. That is why he also was uncommonly gentle and altruistic, giving. Which led to many an unexpected problem, not the least of which was his letting in the Manson 'family'.
