Nice to see my taste validated as "correct."  It really is the greatest song ever, isn't it?

@RangeRoverA1 - the chord changes in GOK are the most inventive/beautiful in any pop song, ever. And the lyrics sum up perfectly how everyone feels towards their significant other at some point or another.

It's not my favorite BB song, but it very well deserves that number 1 spot!

"The Beatles’ “A Day in the Life” from Abbey Road — which topped Consequence of Sound’s album list -- rounds out the top 5."

Nice one.  ::)

They should have written there were two cover songs that made the list - "dazed and Confused" and "Respect."

While I might not completely agree with it, this is a pretty cool list.  Some of the choices are obvious but there are a lot of great songs that you don't usually see in a Greatest Songs list like "Jungleland," "Common People," "This Must Be the Place," "Idioteque," "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea," and "Tomorrow Never Knows."

Yes, because we all know Jimi Hendrix wrote All Along The Watchtower. Otis didn't write Try A Little Tenderness either. But who cares anyway, it is meaningless. It really means Best Record Ever.

It's nice to see GOK at number 1 even though I think GV's is a superior track..

That said, I don't agree with most of the list.

Any list with God Only Knows AND Sister Ray in the top 10, I have to nod my head at. It's a start, anyway.

That's exactly what I thought.

Ok, now to get Brian to sing Sister Ray in his gruff, shouty voice, some cheesy organ sounds, and the BBs doing the riff wordlessly after each line, watching their oo's and ah's.

You know you wanna hear him sing the ding-dong line.

The only proper conclusion to his rock n' roll album. Pleasure Island, indeed... now dontcha know you're gonna stain the CAR-PET!

Except he would sing "ding-dang" instead.

Well, I knew it. Without a doubt, it's a great song but THE best of the best? To me, not even near the Top-100. In general, it is very disappointing to see GOK & GV in "the best of" lists. Why not Surf's Up, for example? I think, it's no less phenomenal & inventive than those 2.

Surf's Up is much deeper than those songs, something that "average" music listeners won't get on the first listens whereas something like God Only Knows is instantly accessible with its universal message that transcends generations, etc.

Man in the Mirror is the 4th greatest song of all time!? That's absolutely absurd.

These sorts of lists are always hilarious.

Less a 'greatest songs of all time' and mroe 'some pretty good songs that everyone has heard, even total idiots'

Man. I typed that without even looking at the list...it's even worse than I thought.  Every single song off Scott 4 and every Nick Drake record pisses all over most of those songs.

Title: Re: Best Song Ever!!!

I think there are only about five songs on there that don't belong in a greatest songs list, tho not necessarily the Top 40.

Any list which includes Notorious B.I.G. in the top 10, has to be a definitive list.    :3d

I listened to the Talking Heads song at #2 on the list.  I haven't heard that song in a long time, and it is still annoying after all these years.

I enjoy these lists a bit more, when they are in no particular order. These people clearly don't care for country music, and if the list wasn't in any particular
order, perhaps then, they could have found a place for one country tune. How about Old Five and Dimers Like Me?

If Man in the Mirror is number 4, In the Ghetto surely could have had a place on there somewhere...

If velvet underground gets sister ray instead of white light white heat, The beach boys should get Surf's up instead of GOK.

Or, I dont know exactly what I'm intending to say. The song white light white heat actually belongs near God only knows...  both those songs I will listen to at anytime. But, Sister ray is only a "good song" if I have been up for two three days on amphetamine (and have some benzodiazapine insurance to stop me from worrying)...only then is Sister ray good.

Unlike the Love You album which is perfectly awesome dead clean sober, and is merely enhanced by speed.

"Shadrach" is a really oddball choice for a Beastie Boys song.

"Shadrach" is a really oddball choice for a Beastie Boys song.

They probably just shuffled Paul's Boutique and the first track to come up went on the list.

It's pretty myopic to speak of "all time" when apparently considering nothing earlier than Sam Cooke.

The entire Sgt. Peppers album takes the top 13 spots!
God Only Knows is now the 14th greatest song of all time.

Sincerely,

This list is absolutely absurd. MAN IN THE MIRROR? MAN IN THE FREAKIN MIRROR?!?!?!?! I'm dumbfounded. This MUST be a joke list. There is absolutely no other explanation. The compilers of the list are laughing themselves silly.

That said, yes of course it's great to see the BBs at number 1.

great to see GOK at the top, but yeah this list (like most) is pretty ridiculous.

Notorious BIG, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Knife, Pulp... but no Stevie Wonder? wtf ever

I love Neutral Milk Hotel, but I am surprised that they are on this list. Not to say that I disagree or anything, but I didn't know they were that popular.
