I'm interested in modeling Brian's style during the Pet Sounds era, especially the haircut. How exactly do you achieve it? You let the hair grow, but you need to trim some specific parts, right? Anybody have experience with this?

Also, any info on his clothing style etc. during this era would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

Step 1: Grow out hair
Step 2: Put on motorcycle helmet
Step 3: Cut hair that sticks out of motorcycle helmet
Step 4: Style hair to resemble motorcycle helmet
Step 5: Repeat every day until the end of time

My younger, sweet16-self had that hairstyle for awhile and back then I thought it looked pretty neat. It's not that hard too achieve, if you get the sides right.  ;) Take a photo of Brian '66/'67 to a coiffeur and you'll get it in no-time.

I have 1966 Brian-esque hair, just kinda grew it. If you really want it to look good then do as Lowbacca suggested. Please note that some (stupid) people may mistake you for an 'emo', I've had that quite a few times.

A few years back when I had just gotten into The Beach Boys I wanted to replicate everything about Brian from his Pet Sounds era. The hair, the coat etc.

I bought the coat but couldn't get the hair. Brian was wayyy ahead of his time not only with his music but image wise too

I'm looking to model a Beach Boys hairdo that would never be misinterpreted as emo.

Any tips on replicating Al Jardine's ponytail?

Buy lots of conditioner.

Every time you see a hairdressers, burn it down.

The Mike Love look would achieve this requirement.

I've thought Mike D'Amico has a pretty good Brian Wilson look going on this tour.

I thought the motorcycle helmet post was pretty funny, myself.

A real diehard Beach Boys fan will always go for the 1971 Mike Love look. The longer the beard the more dedicated you are!

It's a Beatle haircut parted on the side.  All you need is bangs.  If you don't have perfectly straight hair, you may need to get a hair iron and iron it flat from the roots.

If you really want to be hip you should go for the late-70's Brian look with the stringy hair, beard and Messianic robe!

When Brian and the Boys were doing promos for different bands this year, the one that Brian introduced was Fleet Foxes, and I immediately saw him dressed in his robe, long hair and beard, and trying to teach Shortenin' Bread to Robin Pecknold and crew.

Well, winter's on the way so some decent shop should be able to do you a peabody coat!

I once worked with a guy who brought a short pea coat to work every day.  Somebody noticed the buttons on his coat were on the wrong side.  It was a women's coat.  He 'fessed up and said he always wanted a pea coat, but the small selection in the men's department where he shopped were out of his price range and he found a woman's pea coat that fit him and cost half as much.  It was boxy and you couldn't tell it was a women's coat unless you knew that men's and women's buttons are on opposite sides.  Just an idea.

So I went for the haircut today, but my hair isn't nearly as long or volumy. What do you guys think about using volume hairspray? Would that make it look more imposing or is it a waste of money? Could you recommend some hair products?

It's only gonna cost a few quid, so why not? Can't hurt. And it'll grow out, haircuts always look sh*t when you get them and in a couple of days it looks a bit more like it ime.

But if you're going for 'imposing', Brian Wilson isn't really the look  :lol


Although no matter how much you're into the whole 'dressing like BW' thing, white jeans are not a good look on anybody. Don't do it. And unless you actually need them, don't get the glasses. Can't stand people who just wear fake hipster frames.

Peacoats aren't hard to find and they look pretty great, but they can be expensive. I bought one last year on Ebay for $20, you just have to find the bargains. Finding one with the buttons like Brian's might be a little harder though.

I ended up also buying a Nehru jacket too!

I have to disagree about haircuts looking bad when you first get them though.  If that's the case, you need a new stylist.  I wish I could see mine everyday.  The girl is amazing.

Well, i'm more of the 'give it a trim' type because I never really do anything with my hair, so it always comes off looking a bit dorky until it turns into bed hair or something. I don't think I've ever walked into a barbers and shown them a photo... maybe I should!
