Title: Which release official and unreleased do you think is most essential?
Post by: brineweelson on September 16, 2012, 12:32:49 PM
Just wondering what releases everyone here both official and unreleased feel are most essential? Essential being rarest material, best versions, or things that every collector should be lucky to have.

59 minute WAV file of Mike doing 87 takes of the "ME MUH ME MUH ME MUH ME MUH ME MUH ME MUH" part of "Remember (Walkin' In The Sand)" including a fight with Bruce Johnston over his wanting to work on his new song "I Write The Songs II: I Write The Songs Again", sent to me by Terry Melcher himself over the internet from 1993 to 1995.

Melcher was in the midst of a "fugue state" when he did it, though. At least that's the claim.

The answers are funny!!  :-D  I was mainly wondering what is thought to be the best released treasure! I know everything by the boys is essential but stuff like endless harmony or hawthorne etc. What do people consider the best of rare material?

The Good Vibrations box set is the most essential Beach Boys collection.  Though the most essential release in general is obviously Pet Sounds.

I was sitting in my office pondering about the number of potential unreleased recordings made between KTSA and BB85 when suddenly I farted. You can actually listen to my fart here:

Maybe if you took a few of the unreleased KTSA tracks and added them along with "Stevie", etc. you might actually be able to come up with a decent album's worth. That is an era (1980-1984) that seems to get forgotten easily and I am curious to see how this era is represented on the upcoming 6 cd box set...

Interesting. This particular thread on this particular message board was the only place that I put a link to my fart. I wake up today and 7 people have downloaded it thus far. My farts really can get around, eh?

If it was down to one original lp and one boot, I'd go:

Sunflower

Then one of the old Smile boots, from before they put it out with that stupid 2004 running order, with all the pitch shifting and so on. ;) Probably the Vigotone one.

If we're allowed boxes, then the 93 box/Sea of Tunes smile box

This album doesn't get mentioned much, so I thought I'd throw it out there.  If you're trying to introduce someone to the 1970s stuff, the "10 Years of Harmony" double LP set is an awesome overview.

In my opinion, the BBs could always create brilliant music... it's just that in the 70s, they lost the ability to *consistently* create brilliant music.  This set gathers up most of the brilliant moments.
