Title: Brian's ear surgery
Post by: EgoHanger1966 on September 12, 2012, 05:14:35 AM
It was reported in a couple news articles that Brian had some sort of ear surgery around the Wild Honey-era to try to correct the problem in his "bad" ear. Obviously, it never worked, but it seemed to  have left Brian in pain/discomfort for a while. Was this possibly one of the reasons for Brian's so-called retreat as the leader of the band? Did he ever try to have corrective surgery for his ear again?

I wonder if hearing in stereo would kickstart Brian's creativity in a big way (not that he's slacking, just saying). I know folks say Brian is mono 4 lyfe, but imagine suddenly growing two more ears (four in total, Delores) and hearing independent sounds in each. You'd be jizzing all over yourself with justice, you would.

I wonder if he'd even want it. For 70 years, he's lived with it his entire life. It might be too much of a shocker to his system at this point. I can see him wanting it back in '68 for sure, right about the time that mono was being phased out. I wonder if Capitol or the other BB's pressured him to undergo the surgery to keep up with the times? More likely his decision, but there's so little information I can find that speculation is key, for now...

It has been discussed in a few threads. I remember it was briefly discussed here}http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,10870.msg205185.html#msg205185

True enough - I can't see him wanting to bother with it now, either.

I imagine he was content with mono having lived his entire life like that (the Spector obsession helped), but being so in tune with sounds and production, I'd imagine he was fairly curious about hearing something in a very different way.

Don't know about pressure from Capitol/the band, but I'm sure they encouraged it.

It just came up in the news today and I wondered. Brian would be 73 at least before it was ready for humans, mind, so it's purely hypothetical. The real reason for his deafness - which seems to be 'born with it vs. blunt trauma from the Dad Of The Year' - has never been quite pinned down, has it? So hard to tell.

Stereo probably would have blown his mind, in a good way, in 1968. Although he was also hospitalised for a breakdown in that year, I wonder if the operation and its subsequent failure was a factor? O, speculation.
