Title: Angel Come Home (live 1979)
Post by: Cabinessenceking on August 26, 2012, 09:46:03 AM
Great live rendition with Dennis in soul mode onstage. Has this been widely circulated? I know this is from the same gig as Here Comes The Night and GV, both of which were not that great. Not helped by the goofy disco goer dancing in the foreground!

Yep, from the Midnight Special in 1979.

I remember watching this the night it aired. Staying up past midnight without the parents knowing was a tough mission at 13. Taped it onto a Panasonic I still have. It was definitely the highlight of their set. Probably Dennis's last great performance, too....

And it definitely beats the drawers off this remake, however heartfelt a tribute it was meant to be: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvN7V-p0Zzg

It was great in a way, but when I first saw the footage in 1990 I was surprised by how gone Dennis already was compared to the 1976 special.

Love that shot of him and Carl about 1:00 into it. Why the hell didn't Denny do that and a lot more live singing during all of those years? I saw a lot of BB's shows in those days and the only thing I ever witnessed was YASB before the encore.

Nice cover. Thank you ! I like the song but don't get why so many people always say that it is a great one.
I think the production but also the arrangement take much away from it's hit potential (which it had, although I wouldn't say big hit). The cover sounds a little more like a hit but I'm sure the Beach Boys could've done better.

The Midnight Special appearance is interesting. Those were such difficult times for the boys. Dennis looks wasted but all in all they did a pretty good show.

Dennis was mostly upfront for "Surfer girl" "Heroes & villains" and "Help me, Rhonda" (like on Knebworth) during this era and of course when he had leads like "You are so..." "Good timin'" and "Angel come home". He probably had the most charisma of any of the guys in the band and could've been very helpful being more in the spotlight. Especially being a counterpart to Mike, 'cause imo that's what the group needed from time to time when Mike got too embarassing.

I still "Angel Come Home" should have been the lead single off "L.A." I really think it could have been a hit in 1979.

(I also think "Here Comes the Night" should never have been remade).
