Beacuse he was a person that shunned fame and the spotlight, his abilities as a pilot are unfairly overlooked. Whether flying the X-15, saving Gemini 8 from potential disaster , or taking the first steps by any human on a world other than earth, his ability to remain cool is inspirational. I had the fortune to correspond with him following the writing of "Live TV From the Moon" and one thing he never forgot was that his first steps on the moon would not have happened without the 400,000+ people who worked to get him there.
