Title: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: originals on August 24, 2012, 02:27:14 PM I have some great 'Smile' outtakes and rough demos. What else is out there that is recommended? Things that 'fans' and 'collectors' have put together? Lists of your favorite 'Non-Official' releases would be great...THANKS!

Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: Jason on August 24, 2012, 02:47:57 PM The Vigotone 2-CD Smile set is still essential even though much of it has been replaced by the official Smile box and other bootlegs. The complete Sea of Tunes and Dumb Angel sets are required. Get the Boot is another required release. The Pegboy Landlocked/Adult Child is the best place to find those two collections. Leggo My Ego and Capitol Punishment are good compilations of Pet Sounds and Today/Summer Days sessions, respectively. For live bootlegs, look for the two Lei'd in Hawaii shows, the two 1968 London shows, the 1970 Seattle show with Brian subbing for Michael, the 1970 Big Sur Folk Festival gig, the 1971-72 Carnegie Hall gigs, the 1971 Syracuse gig, the 1971 Princeton gig, the two 1971 Fillmore East gigs, the 1972 Boston gig, and the 1973 Hartford gig for a good start. Everything after is for hardcores only.
For solo Brian, Landylocked or Soul Searchin' are needed for the Paley sessions. The Wilson Project, 21 Little Ones, and Come Back, Brian! are great for the second Landy period. It's Not Easy Being Green has a lot of early 80s demos. The demos for That Lucky Old Sun are required. For solo Dennis, look for Denny Remembered. For solo Michael, First Love and Unleash the Love/Mike Love Not War are good to hear. Blondie Chaplin's unreleased album The Fragile Thread is a hidden treasure. Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: originals on August 24, 2012, 02:49:30 PM Wow! Thanks alot!! (I wasn't sure if I was allowed to use the word 'bootleg' on the board)

(I wasn't sure if I was allowed to use the word 'bootleg' on the board) You can use the word "bootleg" on here. Some use the Pink Floyd "RoIO" term, but very rarely. Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: originals on August 24, 2012, 02:56:04 PM Cool. I'll try and find some of these at the rock n roll swap meet near my house - - held the first Sunday of every month.

The With Me Tonight on it is insane! It ties together H&V/Veggies/WMT, it just blew my mind. I...I think I need to go sit down. That's a new on me and my collection ain't bad...! Wha?? Holy cow. That's the title of a mix CD I made for myself a long time ago. It had all the usual Wilson/Paley tracks that everbody has/had. I gave it to only one person I can remember. Does it have a mostly green cover, with a small picture of Brian (that I got from a magazine - can't remember what one - that had an article on Orange Crate Art)? And the back tray card was a green duotone of the poor-quality picture of Brian and Andy Paley with the tracks listed sideways. Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: Aegir on August 25, 2012, 12:58:21 AM I always wanted to hear the show where Brian subbed in for Mike. I never could find it.

Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: runnersdialzero on August 25, 2012, 01:40:31 AM Things that are impossible to find in lossless: Adult/Child that doesn't contain the fan edits of several songs (and are lossy sourced) or isn't from a really bad source.
Also, excellent post The Real Beach Boy. ^_^ Thank you. Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: Aegir on August 25, 2012, 02:04:34 AM what fan edits are there on adult child?
Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: runnersdialzero on August 25, 2012, 03:06:51 AM what fan edits are there on adult child? "Life Is For The Living" should begin with vocals, not a looped section of the song where there's, I believe, a prominent trumpet (inserting that sounds so horrible). "Hey Little Tomboy" should begin with all instruments and the lead vocal coming in at once, not a couple looped instrumental sections. "It's Trying To Say" should begin with Dennis' vocals and the instruments coming in shortly after. If there is, again, a looped bit of music with the "doo-be-doo-doo-doo" vocals that appear later in the song, it's the fan mix. There may be more edits done to the songs, I can't recall off-hand. The Dumb Angel "rarities" version of Adult Child uses the fan mixes, or does on the numerous copies of it I've found. Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: The Shift on August 25, 2012, 04:14:52 AM Just dug a few versions out and working my way through them.
Pegboy edition (2-fer with Landlocked) would appear to be a non-fan edit version but its a very quiet disc; have to crank the volume up to 20 just to get a reasonable volume. If memory serves, the worst culprit for the fan-edits is the Millennium Edition; I'll get round to that later today. Likewise the two-fer on a GEMA disc, cat no. FLCD17, and the Dumb Angel release. Will continue the marathon throughout the afternoon and report back if possible. Have a vinyl copy or two somewhere but doubt I'll get to them through the mess that is my office floor. Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: Wah Wah Wah Ooooo on August 25, 2012, 06:51:01 AM I think the '93 Paramount Theater show with the extended acoustic set is absolutely required listening. An amazing set list, the vocals were very tight, high quality recording...maybe my favorite bootleg. Great, great show. and the rehearsal recording is pretty fun and interesting to hear also.
Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: Catbirdman on August 25, 2012, 10:18:05 AM Catbirdman, not this ordeal again There's nothing sensitive on that disc. It's all stuff everyone has. Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: onkster on August 25, 2012, 03:27:54 PM Cool. (Yeah, I'm still mad. Dammit.) This is the best BBs live boot without a doubt. However, the Seattle show - well, it sounds like it's been recorded 3 miles away through rush hour traffic. A complete waste of time listening to it... Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: mrralan on October 04, 2012, 02:13:42 PM For solo Brian, Landylocked or Soul Searchin' are needed for the Paley sessions. Are any tracks on Landylocked Beach Boy tracks or are they all Brian solo? Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: Jason on October 04, 2012, 02:18:16 PM Most are Brian solo, but You're Still A Mystery, Soul Searchin', Out in the Country, and Back Home are Beach Boys tracks...but to add to the confusion, the first two are the Brian tracks with Beach Boys vocals flown in.
Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: mrralan on October 04, 2012, 03:07:42 PM For the first two, I guess that's the closest we can get to Beach Boys versions.
Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: Jason on October 04, 2012, 03:12:00 PM Pretty much. If I remember correctly (based on how Andrew Doe put it though I may have his data backwards), You're Still a Mystery, Soul Searchin' and Dancin' the Night Away as they appear on boots use the original Wilson/Paley tracks with the Don Was-produced Beach Boys vocals flown in. Don also produced tracks for those recordings, but no one has heard them.

Royal Festival Hall True. Damn my acronyms :) Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: Micha on October 04, 2012, 11:47:27 PM My favorite collection of stuff that was mostly left unreleased at the time is the one commonly referred to as "Landlocked". Though isn't really an unreleased album, it sounds like a great album to me. I just cut "Til I Die" off the end and insert "Games Two Can Play" after "Take A Load Off..." I prefer that much to the Surf's Up album.
And of course the Paley sessions. Wonder though if they'd sound as good if the quality was clearer. Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: Camus on October 04, 2012, 11:57:05 PM re: Paley Sessions Saturday Morning in the City and Soul Searchin' both sound good on GIOMH (despite what anyone says, they used the Paley instrumental tracks with some overdubs).
Title: Re: Suggested....er....'Non Official' Recordings Post by: hypehat on October 05, 2012, 01:21:11 AM The Paley sessions have to be released officially at some point. The quality of the songs/arrangements is far too high to be covered under tape murk.
Otherwise, yeah, TRBB's list is pretty spot - on. If a more car-crash vibe is your game, there's a soundboard of the 1977 Central Park show that beggars belief. |
