That's probably from the part of the 1963 tour when Brian asked Al back to replace him. This is just before David split.

May 1963 is the date on the pic according to the article.

That photo can't be real because Dave and Al were never in the Beach Boys at the same time...right?

Carl's pants are up a little high, aren't they?  There's no way that's comfortable.

Pants were worn way up like that in the (early) 60s. Most of the teen idols wore 'em like that. Really does look uncomfortable.

Trousers used to be designed to sit on what is the human anatomical waist.  It's not uncomfortable, because the trousers were designed that way.  In today's world, where most people wear trousers around the hips, or below, trouser design has changed to accommodate this.

That's the right one - there are a bunch of photos about Portland station KISN in that thread, scroll down a bit from the link location and they're all there. Including the Brian-less Al and Dave lineup on stage and Dennis singing...very cool.  :)

Ah cool...I thought you are referring to the thread from a couple months ago where we put up multiple shots of the Dave/Al lineup playing live.

Why is that bizarre?  Al and Dave were together in the studio and even on the road sometimes in '63.  Brian was home writing or in the studio.

Nothing against Bruce, but that picture is a great "what if." What if Brian decided at that time he was leaving the road for good. Maybe Brian never has his breakdown and Murry – with no replacement waiting in the wings – doesn't ride Dave so hard that he quits.

It would have been interesting to hear what the group would have done. Ah, what if?

It sure is. It's taken from the filming of the Beach Boys- Baywatch episode. I have another picture of the stage for the concert-segment with David, Al, Mike and Bruce. Unfortunately neither Brian nor carl are there although they both appeared on the "Summer of love" intro but David wasn't there. A picture of all six from that time would've been neat

Totally agree. And the other anachronism is that Brian is nowhere to be seen in this photo. Everyone knows he didn't leave the touring band until 1965, and then went to bed for a decade right after Smile collapsed. Sheesh. This is Beach Boys 101.

What concert video is there of Al and David together? (except for those in 2012 of course...and during the 90s(?))

Good to know. I don't know about all those dates, etc. and can only go with what I find on the web and like in this case there's a lot of mis-info out there.

I wonder when they started to wear the striped shirts for most of the time. It looks like during David's era they often wore other clothes

The classic striped shirts first show up in late spring or early summer of 1964.

At first it looks like David is very tall in this picture. But that's only because he is standing next to Al! But still, it seems that he had grown a bit since Surfin Safari

This photo first appeared in a book titled The Lost Beach Boy published in 2007. I don't know why people are acting like its something new.

Now explain to me how you could be all excited about seeing a photo of Al and Dave together on stage in '63 and not have read the only book that goes into detail about that period in Beach Boys history...and how, why, where and when the Al/Dave lineup happened? And how and why Brian decided to make it happen. Plus the photo is in the book. Plus it has all kinds of behind the scenes stories about the Al/Dave period of the band. It was published over 5 years ago by a major publisher. Seems odd to me that this stuff is news to Smiley Smilers in 2012.

Some people don't buy books that often or this book isn't in a library yet.... ;)

Well, if Jon hadn't mentioned it I wouldn't know that the picture is in "The Lost Beach Boy". I found it on the web when I googled "Al Jardine David Marks" (or something along those lines). So, to me it was new. I don't buy books very often (and unfortunately the same goes for CDs too by now). It's just a money thing.

Nah...don't worry about that. I just thought people were more up to speed on this lineup than this thread has revealed. BTW...I think I have discovered about 8 or 9 different photos of this lineup so far, all taken in different cities in '63. Brian missed a lot of shows that year.

Agreed. If folks spend a lot of time discussing The Beach Boys' career, typing and reading posts on a message board, the best and most informative books on the band should be a priority. But I read posts here with "newly discovered info" that was included in Look Listen Vibrate Smile, fer cripes sakes.

Some of those people might not speak English fluently.Maybe they might not have access to the books being mentioned since both of them are out of print or maybe they are working their way through the many other Beach Boys book on the market.

Let people discover the Beach Boys in their own way. If this board is their main source of their information, so be it.

I'm waiting for the book that has a pic of Dave, Al and Brian on stage together in '63…

I recently signed off on an ok for the publisher to make the the Lost Beach Boy available as a digital book...so it should be coming.

Referring back to those pics of David with the band in the 90's for that Baywatch episode, are there any photos of David and Carl (or Dennis for that matter) taken after 1963 or so? I know he popped in a few times at shows and whatnot over the years when Carl was still around; just curious if a photo exists, especially from the 80's or 90's.

The last time Dave and Dennis were together was '71. No known photos of Dave and Carl from the '90's.

Are there any known photos of Dave sitting in on any shows from after he left in 1963, but before he came back in the 1990's?

In the original photo, Carl's even wearing blue suede shoes. 

Those old pics are so cool, so unpretentious by todays standards.  Looks like my cousin's garage band from the mid 60's.

By the way, was David in nursing school when that pic was made, or was he just clowning around wearing that silly hat?

Wow, what dorks! (I say that with love.) It's no wonder the Beatles were seen as cool when they showed up in tailored suits.

Didn't Brian once say that when the Beatles showed up in the US it made them feel like the chess club?

I remember something along the lines of "...we felt more like golf caddies than rock stars..."
