I've been playing this over & over the last few months. Up there with 'Pet Sounds', 'Forever Changes', and 'Tim Hardin 2' as far as I'm concerned. Perfect '67 California sound.

If his other songs have such kind of gracious & haunting melodies, then he must have been a very good songwriter. R.I.P. The only problem with that is that he didn't write San Francisco. The Scott McKenzie album from 1967 is a bit poor, a few covers, weak production, but has a couple of good originals: What's The Difference (part One and part two). The article does make it seem that way, but i've never heard anything other than John Phillips writing it on his own and bringing to Scott McKenzie. And John was generous with his writing credits. Michelle Phillips got 50% credit on California Dreamin for basically acting as John's secretary and writing down his words on a piece of paper. It seems like that old generation of Golden and Silver age musicans and celbrities are almost completely gone, we're very fortunate to still have Brian, Mike and the rest of the boys still with us.
Title: Re: RIP Scott McKenzie Post by: GuyOnTheBeach on August 22, 2012, 11:00:36 AM I was deeply saddened to hear about this, I was friends with Scott on Facebook and he always had something witty, insightful or funny to say, his posts often brightened up my day to an extent and it was moving to see the amount of tributes on his page.
I shall miss him in the way I do very few people I've never actually met. There is only one regret I have, for the last few months I kept wanting to tell how much I loved 'San Francisco', but I could never word the message without sounding like a sycophantic fanboy so I never sent it. RIP, Scott, you will be missed. |
