Title: Unreleased 1974/75 Album?
Post by: EthanJClarke93 on August 12, 2012, 12:49:19 PM
I Don't believe this is on the forum, but I did read somewhere that The Beach Boys did recorded some songs in late 1973 and up to 1974 and planning on releasing an album sometime in 1974 or early 75 with the success of Endless Summer, by any chances does anyone know the songs they recorded from 1973-74, I believe Seasons In The Sun was recorded during this time as well

The Beach Boys did recorded some song in late 1973 through the ultimate of 1975...if they were for an "albums", I have much doubt. Seasons in the Sun was recordeded in the 70th year of 19.

They tried to make an album at Caribou in 1974, but Brian wasn't up to the task. Shame, because his voice was still intact and tracks at those sessions showed it.

I'm being totally serious or something. From the top link:

'Caribou Album'
projected release date ?January 1975
recorded  fall 1974
produced by The Beach Boys except *Brian Wilson
Battle Hymn Of the Republic* - Good Timin' - California Feelin' - Don't Let Me Go - You're Riding High On The Music - Ding Dang - Our Life, Our Love, Our Land - Lucy Jones
(track sequence not known)

During fall 1974, sessions were held at Jimmy Guercio's Caribou Ranch studio at Nederland in Colorado, and later at Brother Studio in Santa Monica for an album set to be released in early 1975. Brian was said to be actively involved in the proceedings but, to no-one's great surprise, no release occurred, and as time went by it leaked out that the sessions produced only incomplete tracks and that the album was never much of a reality. Many of the tapes were allegedly destroyed when the studio suffered a serious fire, only the tapes taken to Brother surviving (allegedly - there's now good reason to doubt this tale). "Good Timin'" surfaced on L.A. (Light Album) in a revised form but based on the 1974 tape while "Ding Dang" (also referred to as "Rolling Up To Heaven") was released on The Beach Boys Love You, albeit in a completely re-recorded version. A completely new  (2001) recording of "California Feelin'" appeared on the 2002 compilation The Beach Boys Classics Selected By Brian Wilson. The legendary "Battle Hymn Of The Republic" was included on an initial lineup of Endless Harmony - that is, until the compilers actually heard it, whereupon it was swiftly dropped. The charitable opinion is that Brian was having one of his musical jokes and making lead vocalist Mike look a complete idiot in the process: it is truly, truly awful.
Possibility of release: neither possible nor desirable.

Shame that Brian had his end-all breakdown when endless summer got big because he looked pretty healthy from 1970-1973. Fat Brian was only around from 1974-1975 in the public eye.

Same here. This person in the picture has a je ne sais quoi... the gaze resembles that of Bela Lugosi in Glen Or Glenda... I am so totally under his spell... a chilling "Bevaaahhrre"seems just around the corner...

I mentioned this in another thread a while ago. I think the Beach Boys  /Brian in some ways in '74 were on to write new material with a more classic Beach Boys sound than for example the moody "Holland". "Good timin'" and "It's ok", both written and partially recorded in '74 show that. Maybe the success of Endless Summer had something to do with that, I don't know because no one knows at which point Brian started writing those tunes (Stephen Desper just mentioned that he worked on "Good timin'" and "Full sail" for example, so those were written before '74). He might've had them in his head for a few years already.
But what I'd like to do now is to make up a list of songs that were written/recorded around that time or was aying around and released later. The fact that tose tunes were released makes me think that they had a good chance to get on a '74/'75 album too. Of course there are exceptions

We have:

River song
Good timin'
It's ok
Full sail
Ding Dang (although I'm pretty sure this wouldn't have been released in this form/with those lyrics but maybe in a longer form than on Love You)
Holy man (I think this was worked on at this time, wasn't it?)
Hard times (the Blondie/Ricky tune, although we don't know if it would've appeared as Blondie wasn't in the band anymore)

On the other hand,maybe that's total bullsh!t

Was "Holy Man" ever actually meant to be a Beach Boys song?

I don't know but as with "Love surrounds me" and "Baby blue" I'm sure Dennis would have given it to the boys if they wanted it for a new album

It must be a real mindf*ck to log on to a beach boys website and find a picture of yourself posted.  ;D

That reminds me of the time that I once saw a picture of the temptations posing with a fan. This guy had a wheelchair much like my own, had a buzz cut similar to mine, had glasses like the ones I own, and was even wearing the exact same t-shirt that I happen to own. I sh!t you not. I almost screamed when I saw it.  :ahh

Mr.Doe's expression in this photo seemed to have an appropriate, "Come on, guy. All the info you seek is on my site," tone to it. I couldn't resist. :(

Play 'Barbara Ann' for him in person, grab camera.

'Full sail'?! That's the first time I've heard of that dating from this era.

A few months ago I had just finished smoking some strong weed (a rare occurrence for me these days) and turned on the tv only to see myself in the movie Year One (I was a featured extra and have approx 3 minutes time in the movie). That was a mind f***!
