Title: Favorite songs containing human/non-human name in title Post by: Gertie J. on August 12, 2012, 07:01:20 AM All right. You can name any song(s) but NOT BB-related. And better if you explain why you like it or them so bad. Tho you have a right not to do it. To name a few:
Shannon by Henry Gross (I love it, so endearing!) Lovely Linda by Macca (short but no less cute!) New York New York by Frank Sinatra (song about my home state even if I no longer live there. Frank's version blows away every other version! Amazing singer!) Juanita by Flying Burrito Bros (think this is my fav of said songs. Lots of happy childhood memories) Ookaay. Now your turn, Smileys. ;) Title: Re: Favorite songs containing human/non-human name in title Post by: Gertie J. on August 12, 2012, 05:38:19 PM Guess I baffled you all. ;D All right i 'membered 2 fav toons by the Kinks, Victoria and Australia.

The Beatles - Polythene Pam, Mean Mr. Mustard, etc... (they have so many!) Elliott Smith - Ballad of Big Nothing ("...pinpoint eyes full of smoldering anger"... powerful, and dark lyrics) Miles Davis - Freddie Freeloader (the groove!) Fleet Foxes - Oliver James (lost in the rain...) this is a fun game, haha! Title: Re: Favorite songs containing human/non-human name in title Post by: blank on August 12, 2012, 06:55:28 PM thanks to iTunes (scrolling through all five-star rated songs by order of play count) I could just keep rattling these off for a while...

Title: Re: Favorite songs containing human/non-human name in title Post by: Rocker on August 15, 2012, 01:43:39 PM "Michelle" - Beatles
"Mary in the morning" - Presley's version is just outtathisworld ! "Hello Josephine" - Fats Domino (although I like Jerry Lee Lewis' version better, I guess) "Linda" - Jand & Dean's version (to be honest, I don't know the original yet) "Lana" - Roy Orbison "Valda" - Carl Perkins "Lucille" - Little Richard "Polk salad Annie" - Tony Joe White "Amanda" - Waylon Jennings "Nadine" - Chuck Berry "Deliah's gone" - Johnny Cash (I don't know if I'd call this one of my favorites but it is a great song and both of Cah's version - 60s and 90s - are very cool) "Black Betty" - the famous version by Ram jam is cool but not too many people seem to know that it is an old blues song already done by Leadbelly a.o. ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYrK464nIeY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiCEVl_9-MM Do city names also count ? If so: "That's how I got to Memphis" - Bobby Bare And I probably forgot a lot of others as there is so much great music out there.... I remember that I liked Jet's "Timothy" but I haven't listened to it in a long time Title: Re: Favorite songs containing human/non-human name in title Post by: Amanda Hart on August 15, 2012, 05:43:57 PM "Lana" - Roy Orbison Yes! Maybe my favorite Orbison song, which is really saying a lot. I also really like the three "girl name" songs from Randy Newman's 12 Songs. They're all various parts funny, desperate, creepy and obviously well-written, basically like all of his best stuff is. "Rosemary" and "Suzanne" are real standouts for me though. Title: Re: Favorite songs containing human/non-human name in title Post by: Ron on August 19, 2012, 12:17:48 AM Allman Brothers - In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. Playing right now. Hey, this rocks. And more. I've never heard that one. However, "Melissa" is amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pwbowi-8Yoo very moody, it makes me think the whole 70's must have been like that. I wasn't there. Another one I always absolutely loved was "Susan" by the Buckinghams. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QOch_eSKz8 Check out that crazy hard panned Stereo mix. Great harmonies, they always sang so well. The rounds at the end are fantastic, almost Beach Boys worthy. Also, here's "Iesha" by Another Bad Creation. Without a doubt, the greatest song ever about a girl named Iesha. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDPIK7Fz_g4 I wonder why they don't have kid groups like that anymore. They sing pretty good on the hook. Also they rhyme "Nintendo" with "Cereal". Creativity like that is seldom seen in pop music anymore. Bobby Helms - "Frauelein" Just to prove that a woman, no matter how ugly her name, has always been great inspiration for good music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHNtpkeXPJ8&feature=related Willie Nelson - "Big Booty" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6jcF2gbzfc Has to be seen to be believed. Makes me think Willie Nelson has been completely missed, nobody has seen what great talent this man has possessed for 50 years now. Michael Jackson - "Dirty Diana" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUi_S6YWjZw The story goes that Michael played a concert that Princess Diana and Prince Charles (Married at the time) attended. Michael knew they were there, and changed his setlist so that he didn't play this song because he thought it would be improper. After the show, Diana met him, and immediately asked him why he didn't play "Dirty Diana", it was her favorite song of his! Simon and Garfunkel - "Cecilia" Always loved this one. "Jubilation! She Loves Me Again!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5_QV97eYqM tons and tons and tons more great songs with girls names in the title. Susanna, but it's certainly a "name song" -- and an all time classic melody. I can get quite emotional when humming a Stephen Foster tune... I've learned the hard way at band practices. I can easily turn the premise of "just jamming" into a plodding 20 minute version of Old Folks At Home. :-D (Off Topic: If you dig Jesus Dropped The Charges you gotta watch this one too, both are from the excellent 1980 gospel music documentary SAY AMEN SOMEBODY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gW7z5ASa4W0) Oh, and how about Elvis singing Old Shep? Not really a favorite, but I thought I'd mention it. Hate to sound obvious, but I do wonder why you simply didn't list the original, by Crosby Stills & Nash? Title: Re: Favorite songs containing human/non-human name in title Post by: halblaineisgood on October 05, 2012, 02:39:50 PM Sherry - The Four Seasons Yes, it used to be one of my overall faves, but there are many Four Seasons songs that I think of as better:Dawn (Go Away) (as I understood, it's name, not the word) Don't Cry, Elena (my favorite bit is Frankie's high-pitched "is guided by..." and "but that's not up to me" moments plus the final "Ele-e-a-a-ayna") Mrs. Stately's Garden (the song's simply loaded with energy & positivity & also has some psychedelia & even something magical in it. In short, very enjoyable song) Idaho (I like its retro, extremely sentimental mood, don't know why, I usually don't like such kind of songs) Oh Carol (to me it's much better than Neil Sedaka's original. Can't stand those girl harmonies at the intro & in the middle eight) |
