Title: Air - Remember - Do It Again sample
Post by: Zach95 on August 07, 2012, 10:04:38 PM
I really didn't know what to do with my (incredible  ;D) discovery of the drum sample from Do It Again found on Air's Remember from the album Moon Safari.  I thought about putting this in the general music forum, but then I figured this does concern the Beach Boys, so then I thought to put it in the media section, but I figured it didn't particularly fit there either.  So, here it is, feel free to move this thread mods, if you wish.  Anyway, I thought this was really interesting and worth sharing! Curious as to why they chose this sample, anyone familiar with this?

Edit: I like the song and the band, I thought it would be interesting to add comments from the man who first created that incredible drum hook on the original, the way he got that sound is a few posts up at that link.

No problem! Quick story: When that album was new, a friend brought it over in a stack of new discs to check out. That song came on, I hadn't heard it before then. I said something like "holy crap!" or "no way!" or some other shocked reaction and it kind of stopped the room. If I remember it was at my place, so I quick went for my stack of BB's two-fers, found Do It Again, and put it on to smiles and surprised reactions. Holy crap! was the general mood.  :-D

I'll say again, I really like some of the soundscapes and grooves that Air creates.

If you like them, I'd also recommend checking out Cornelius, especially his album "Fantasma". Some of the Brian-BW references are obvious (he recreates some of the Pet Sounds era studio photos in the album artwork, along with 60's garage-punk images), but they're not overt samples like the Air drum loop.

Oh man, I loved this album when it first came out. I picked up on the Do It Again sample right away, which was icing on the cake.

I remember watching the video for "All I Need," which I found very original and odd. I just looked it up, and it struck me the same way. It's a young teenage couple talking about their relationship, skateboarding, and stuff. It affects me kind of like a Beach Boys song - on the surface very light and unsophisticated subject matter, not couched in a terrible amount of angst or existentialism, but leaving you with a certain satisfaction, a sense of being, a direct look at how we experience life. Sorry, it's hard to explain what I mean.

Thanks! I'll check them out. I had the same sort of reaction when a friend showed me this song, and we played Do It Again as you did just to make sure.
