Interesting. The list has it at one disc. Is that just  a place holder for the real details to come? If not, 1 disc wouldn't hold 50 big ones now, would it?   ;D

Er... I really hope this isn't going to be it? One greatest hits cd - is that it? Surely not. There's going to be more, right?

Could be a reissue or the "one disc" info could be early placeholder and inaccurate... I doubt that even Capitol would so callous as to reissue an old GH release at this stage in the game.

I have to imagine it's a placeholder for 50 Big Ones...at least that would make sense.

I think this kinda might be good news. If this is popping up on Amazon, I would think that possibly an announcement might by coming from Capitol pretty soon regarding what is coming out later this year.

I think if they are offering preorders at $13.99, it is not a multidisc set.

Not necessarily. I could see a two-disc set being around that price. I'd imagine that the band want 50 Big Ones to be the go to Beach Boys compilation after it's release. Kinda like a '10s version of Endless Summer, so I think maybe they'd wanna keep it reasonably priced.

Well, I don't think the news actually came out. But SurfRiderHawaii (I think thats his name) went to a show recently and Al told him that the new "box set" was 50 tracks long and that they were recording new stuff for it and whatnot, and that it's called 50 Big Ones. But since most sane people not named Alan Jardine know that a box set isn't just two CDs, we figured out Al was just being Al and kinda not understanding things. So that's enough of a confirmation for me that that's the title. I kinda like the title myself. I'm looking forward to seeing what the tracklist is, and seeing what the new songs are. So yeah, I can't really imagine that Capitol would put out a one-disc release titled Greatest Hits right before putting out a two-disc set and a new box set. Doesn't make much sense to me.

Amazon listings typically start off saying "1 disc" because that's what most releases are.
They listed McCartney's deluxe "Ram" as "1 disc" for the longest time.

Yeah, that's what Al said though, as I've stated, I'm fuzzy if Al was really saying 50 songs.  That said, I'd go with AGD as to what's actually gonna happen.

I really hope it isn't a f*cking 50 track greatest hits, with a couple of new tracks thrown on it (supposedly to compensate for the crushing disappointment of WIBNTLA not being released, again). You are aware that a box set is being released, right? And that "Live Again" will probably be on it, ya know? Personally, I'm kinda interested to see what a two-disc "greatest hits" disc would contain. I would like to see some of Brian's masterworks like "This Whole World" and "Surf's Up" on a high profile collection, at the expense of songs that might be a bit more popular, but not as good. Plus, I'm interested to hear the new songs. Maybe some we know of? I'm intrigued.

I've never known any band anywhere release a box set and a greatest hits simultaneously. Surely no record company would agree to anything like that, as one could potentially cancel out sales of the other? Is the box set fact or rumour - because if it's rumour then i think this greatest hits could turn out to be all we're getting...

Well, the Beach Boys themselves released a boxed set and two-disc version of Smile at the same time (and digital and vinyl versions to boot), so I don't think it's that unusual. No one dropping $100 on a big box set would bother with a hits set, and people who buy the hits set might be interested in the box.

The box set has been confirmed at least twice. Here's the original Capitol records press release:

Also, there has been recent Capitol promotional material saying that a large box set is coming in the fall.

The question is, will this be a legit compilation like Sounds of Summer or a Capitol cash-in like 10 Great Songs which I've seen in stores?

I'm not sure the 50 tracks thing makes much sense.  I mean it makes sense as a concept but Sounds of Summer and Warmth of the Sun together has more than 50 tracks.  Why not just re-issue those two as a single two-disc collection?

Why does any new Greatest Hits compilation make sense?

Because that would be nothing new and hardly interesting.

Put some new songs on it so we go out and buy it.

I won't buy a GH set ever again unless there is something new or previously unreleased on it. I would make an exception for one that used all the original mono mixes in chronological order and has every notable worldwide hit on it.

But a new compilation would likely have the same tracks for the majority, except with maybe some TWGMTR tracks tacked on.  And to me, that couldn't be any less interesting.

I wonder if we'll see any tracks from The Smile Sessions on future best ofs? It'd be weird if the Smiley edit of "Heroes" was phased out, and it'd be really sad to see Carl's "Surf's Up" excluded in favor of the TSS edit.

Agreed. I love all the Heroes & Villains versions, although the Smiley version remains my favourite, and i much prefer the Surf's Up version of Surf's Up than the TSS version.

Seeing as how the Platinum Collection used stereo mixes for H&V and the Pet Sounds tracks, I can't help wondering if we'll see some of these new stereo mixes like GV cropping up on this hits compilation.

I wondered about this also. Although I'd still say that the Smiley Smile "Heroes" and the '71 "Surf's Up" are more part of the official Beach Boys canon, and are more popular, so I personally hope they use those two. Especially since it was that version of "Heroes..." that went to number 12, and it was that version of "Surf's Up" that helped give the guys their best charting album in a while.

I'd like to see at least one song from Love You, preferably The Night Was So Young. Since there's a 100 to 1 chance of that happening at least include Surf's Up and Time To Get Alone. :hat

Just checked some of the other amazon sites... Looks like this is coming from EMI Marketing so at a guess it'll be nine, ten or so tracks with no surprises and nothing new. I guess the real deal is still to surf-ace.

It has been nearly 20 years since the last "comprehensive" box.  Much has happened.

Upgraded remixes, SMiLE box, twofer extras, unearthed/unvaulted pieces, "new" boots, new BB CD, Brian, Mike, Al material, and more. 

I want a new comprehensive box and I think it is time, and I would bet on it happening.

As always, I hope they don't screw it up.

But over the past 12 months, against all statistical probability, they have gotten it so unbelievably right.

Tracks 12, 15, 21, 31, 38, 39, 40, 48 & 49 were not hits (in the US). Just sayin'.

I agree. Good call. And, a flurry of '60s live shows nothwithstanding, a good big comp with a whole slew of Brother Years rarities/unreleased would just about make their available catalogue perfect for this listener (I am very satisfied with the Capitol two-fers as they are, mind, and that does not go for every fanatic, I know).

Why don't the powers that be just get hold of the Unsurpassed Masters enterprise catalogue and release it as it is, e.g. via a postal outlet only?

Gawd no… they couldn't do a carbon copy, and having bought 'em all the first time around, I couldn't justify doing that again. When I joined the Church of Brian I only pledged my first million to the House of Wilson; if they want my second too, they're gonna have to give me something fresh in return.

If they do a "50 Big Ones" album, they should just take the songs from the 50 Sides of the Beach Boys book and make an audio companion.

I'm wondering if 50 Big Ones will have a similar design, seeing as though this Greatest Hits likely is just condensed version of it. I kinda think it would cool if they did a re-do of the 15 Big Ones cover, with Dave and Bruce replacing Carl and Dennis, but I guess that wouldn't make much sense as Carl and Dennis are on many more tracks that will be on 50 Big Ones than Dave and Bruce.

I think that's actually a pretty cool cover.
