Title: Fifty Sides of The Beach Boys news
Post by: Mark Dillon on July 25, 2012, 10:05:16 AM
Hi everybody. I just wanted to share with you this great news I recently got from my publisher ECW Press. The first print run of my book Fifty Sides of The Beach Boys is near sold out after a couple of months, and they are going forward with a second print run. I would like to thank people here for their support, in terms of their informative posts, the direct help they have offered and for buying the book. It is greatly appreciated.

That's great, congrats! I've heard nothing but good stuff about it. Gonna purchase it with the next amazon order (as well as The Beach Boys FAQ).

You mean they're printing ANOTHER 50 copies?????

Seriously, many congrats!  I never had a book that made it to a second sale (budget edition, yes, without telling me), let alone a second print run!

Your second $million approaches… don't forget to remember us!

I'm actually reading it daily on the train back & forth to work this week. Great book so far. Loving Zooey Deschanel's thoughts on Wouldn't It Be Nice.

Congrats Mark, on the 2nd print run. You writes good. ;)

My 17 year old son bought it for me in honor of my birthday a few weeks ago.   :)  It's a great book full of tid-bits that I hadn't previously seen.  Just today, I went searching for Keith Green's cover of "Girl Don't Tell Me" as a result of the write-up on that song.  Congrats on the success of the book!

And, for those interested, here's what I found when I looked for the Keith Green cover (it's the 2nd song in the video and begins at about 2:15):

I look forward to reading your book when I can afford it, it's killing me knowing there is a new Beach Boys book out there that I can't get yet. Glad the book is selling well, it's amazing that you had the foresight to release it in the same time period that a book with a similar title was released and trick a few desperate housewives into ordering your book by mistake... ;)

A most deserving success, Mark--a very nice pocket history, with a well-selected, imaginative set of songs as its centerpiece. A very worthy addition to the BB's ever-expanding bibliography.

Mark, Congratulations! - I've been really looking forward to getting a copy; doubly so since AdamGhost offered the Chaos band gig package deal.

I think multi-media cross promotional packages are a great way for writers and musos to offer their wares  ;)

I'm planning to do a playlist on iTunes to accompany the book, with all the songs covered in the book. Could be some interesting additional tracks as well. Would that interest anyone out there?

No problem and I will let you know as soon as I get any leads on selling mine. Meanwhile I am glad to see a book like yours doing so well. This and FAQ, plus Jon's earlier books, and Andrew's, are all highly recomended.

I just got it a couple of days ago and I can't put it down! It follows me everywhere from the library to the bathroom to my bed. Mark, how's it feel to know someone reads your work before they go to sleep? That's gotta be a good feeling of some type.

BTW, this is Justin Plank

I bought it on my Nook several weeks ago.  ESSENTIAL reading for any serious BB fan.  You did a great job telling the story of the band through the songs and by talking to the people who were actually there.  GET THIS BOOK!

Hi MTR. It is in major bookstores. Whereabouts are you? You could also order via Amazon or the iBookstore, or, like I mentioned in my other post, I could sell you a signed copy directly.

I've seen it at Barnes & Noble around here.  It's a slick looking book, by the way!  I bought the NOOK version...but I might have to go and pick up the physical version to put on the shelf.  They're some GREAT stories told within the pages.

Thanks for buying and for your kind words. You know, when you buy the hard copy, the publisher will give you a digital version for free. I'm very grateful for the book jacket design. Dave Gee, the designer, by pure coincidence, lives right across the street from me. He did a great job doing it in a 7" 45-record format.

Well perhaps it wasn't in stock at the time. I will try again before I head back to Dallas so I can read it on the plain.

I've got all the way up to KTSA and I love it! There's been passages in the book that I honestly didn't know about. Like James Gurcio's introduction to the BB or Randy Bachman possibly collaborating with Brian, I had no idea! Great research my friend! What a way to do it with the closest folks you can get to those songs. Heck, I think you could do a second volume with 50 other people, honestly!

I'm now up to Midnight's Another Day, this book is brilliant!

All I gotta ask is, I think in the introduction, Mark says there was a couple he wanted to interview like Marilyn Rovell and VDP...but they're not all about talking about the Beach Boys stuff anymore ( I think that's what I read)...anyways, I was wondering what songs you were gonna ask them about? like Marilyn- Caroline No or Be True to Your School? Maybe the song Marilyn Rovell?  ;)  Or what song for VDP? Cabinessence? Orange Crate Art?

Wait, did the particular interviewee pick the song? I can't remember.

Thanks so much, JP.

I would usually work out the song to be discussed with the interviewee. I might've come to them with a suggestion, or they may have suggested one to me. If I had interviewed her and I'd had my druthers, I think I would've asked Marilyn about BTTYS, because that song not only features The Honeys prominently, but came out around the time that she became a big part of Brian's life. I would've given some consideration to "Caroline, No" as well, but I don't think that would've been a great idea. She has said that she thinks the song is about her, whereas Tony Asher says otherwise. As for Van Dyke, I would've suggested "Heroes and Villains," since that marks the beginning of their Smile collaboration. He very politely declined. He said he'd had enough about talking about The Beach Boys. I came back to him and said that we could just as well talk about "Orange Crate Art," which is really his project, but still no dice.

Of course, the other big one who wouldn't talk to me was Ricky Fataar. I can't tell you why, because he never responded to my requests. But it would have been great to have him talk about "Marcella" or something else from the Carl & the Passions era.

I agree about Ricky! I would love some insight on So Tough.
