I really dig the Darlin' stereo mix. I'm not quite sure how to get this point across but I like how you kept the... ... low-fi chunkiness? of the song intact. I think that's really integral to the sound of Wild Honey and was worried having all the songs in crisp stereo would give the album a totally different feel.

I've been listening to your Smile A.D mix the last couple of days.  I am blown away with how you've layered and manipulated various vocals to fit some of the incomplete tracks.  Look in particular sounds fantastic.  I love the use of 2004 Brian on I Wanna Be Around and the backing vocals, the extra vocals on Love To Say Da Da, Child Is Father of the Man and Holidays.  Absolutely superb work, and I'll be using these 'extra vocals' versions to replace the ones I've been using in my own SMiLE mix.

Actually, I'll have to agree on your point about fun - sound manipulation/mixing is something I really enjoy when I can get it right!

Overall, what was cut was definitely a good choice, but there's a bit near the very end (but not AT the very end) where Brian is singing with Carl and it works really, really well.

Yeah, it sounds awesome, but Mikes vocal at the beginning sounds odd but i don't know why - it just doesn't sound right

Right, good ears. Like I said, the extraction isn't as clean as Darlin, or Do It Again for that matter.

There were LOUD interfering hi hats on the double tracked vocal, and that's pretty much the hardest thing to extract, so I had to reduce the quality of the 2nd vocal in order to keep the hi hats from phasing. The other option would have been to just keep it single tracked, and that's no fun.

Also, the guitar line happens to double Mike's notes exactly in a lot of spots, so trying to remove that from the vocal took away from the quality somewhat. A lot of this stuff relies on the vocal having it's own unique melody separate from the instruments. Any melodic overlapping (or loud drums) is where quality issues start to happen.

But I think it gives a good idea of what an authentic stereo mix could sound like.

I can definitely hear some artifacts and rough edges on A Thing Or Two. They aren't really noticeable on computer speakers, only headphones. But jeeze, the Darlin' one is so perfect. It's just great, period. I think it's the best stereo fan mix that I've ever heard.   

"A Thing or Two" has always (IMO) been the hidden gem on an LP filled with hidden gems, the apex of the entire reworking of the BB sound into R&B, so...bravo Seltaeb for giving us a vibrant new mix--as has been said already, it would be fantastic if you did all of Wild Honey, including the title track.

Like hearing it for the first time all over again. Thanks for bringing it back to life. WHEW!! :woot :woot

Seltaeb, the thing that sets your Good Vibrations stereo mic apart from the others is the inclusion of the early "Good, Good, Good, Good Vibrations, yeah!" vocals on the verses! To my knowledge, nobody's done that before. It's very cool and worth the effort! And including the "Hum-dee-dum" and alternate ending like the TSS version is very cool!  And if you wanted to do a version with Asher's lyrics - it would be outstanding!

You're doing great - please don't give up on it!   ;D

This stereo mix of H&V is loosely based on Brian's early mix tests for the song, as well as a few clues given by the original names Brian gave the different sections. I extracted the vocals from the verses and placed it on the instrumental (which, originally in mono, now has different instruments panned out in the stereo field).

I used what's known as the "H&V Intro" as the bridge between H&V & DYLW. It's actually in the same key, so who knows, maybe this is what BW meant by "intro". No BWPS fly ins on this one, but I do use the harmonies on both verses. I used the acetate version of Bicycle Rider for the choruses & used the alternate backing track + double tracked Brian's vocals for the bridge just for the hell of it.

Any thoughts on revisiting Holidays? Either with 'Plymouth rock' vocal removed or lifted from BWPS? It's the only part of the 3.0 mix that doesn't seem right  by my ears. All the rest is GENIUS (twice over!).

Yes, this is new. The last mix I did for 3.0 & 4.0 was the GV Box Set version in stereo. This one uses the Brian & Mike lead vocal trade-off from Brian's early mono mixes of the song, which I believe would've been done before the GV Box Set version. It also has Mike singing the first line of the Cantina section, and a few other format changes.
I haven't considered going back to Holidays to remove the DYLW vocals because that's part of the arrangement despite the quality issues, but I appreciate the comments!

I could give it a try, but chances are it wont be nearly as good as My Solution. The source was decent quality... def from an earlier generation than the version on Youtube.

The quality has to be decent going into it. For instance, I made "Rolling Up To Heaven" sound a lot better. Stuff of that quality I can improve. But if I recall, Carry Me Home sounds like a 40th generation tape or something.

Since you like your 'vinyl' endings, I have the sound of my old suitcase player rejecting somewhere on here if you want it. I used it in my Music tech coursework for precisely that reason :D

As far as the methods used, usually it's a matter of trying to isolate as many elements as possible. With "A Thing Or Two", "Darlin", "Little Girl I Once Knew", etc I grabbed what I could from Sea Of Tunes, then went into Izotope RX and extracted the vocals. Sometimes I'll use the "Center Channel Extractor" in Adobe Audition, or just the OOPS effect if there's something panned hard left or right that I could use. There's some other trickery involved from song to song. For instance, in "The Little Girl I Once Knew" I looped certain parts. Like the final part where they go into D major, I grabbed that from the chorus since it was a cleaner extraction, then crossfaded it into the rest of the original section. If you have any specific questions I'd be happy to answer!

Thanks a lot for the link to Darlin (awesome to hear the horns properly), and that pretty much answers my question.  Wondered if you were using Melodyne or something (that something being Izotopes RX) to separate elements from mono mixes, then panning them around.  Or were using phase cancellation on different mixdowns to isolate elements.

I'm still a little puzzled at where all the source material is coming from, for Wild Honey especially.  Didn't know there was stereo tracks floating around out there!  Very impressed with not only your mixing, but the sourcing of this stuff.  I'll do a bit more research before asking more questions :)

On the PSS box, there's a version of "God Only Knows" with an extended vocal tag.

The tag itself is in stereo, but the rest of the track is an earlier, mono version with Brian on lead vocals.

Has anyone ever made a mix combining the stereo mix of "God Only Knows" with this extended vocal tag? It was (literally) the only thing I was hoping for on the PSS box that we didn't get.

Honestly, I've wanted to hear this since 1996. (18 years!) When the PSS box was first being written-up (more than a year prior to its release), I emailed Mark Linett with questions and a wishlist of about a half dozen items -- one of which was this item you've created, a stereo remix of "God Only Knows" with the a capella tag (first heard on CD5 of the GV box). Linett responded to say that one item in my wishlist didn't exist ("In My Childhood", beyond the YSBIM backing track) but that I'd be getting everything else and would be happy etc. Well -- tonight Linett's message was 100% fulfilled. Thank you again!

Thanks for this, I haven't posted here for ages but felt prompted to do so as I listened to this last night. It's bloody good, very creative, love the ghostly vocals added into the instrumental tracks. I also like the fact that some of the tracks are edited a bit which stops them getting too tedious.

There are two fan remixes that I've always wanted to see(er, hear?) somebody try. One of them is Brian's 1976 "Sherry She Needs Me" vocal synced with the other "Sandy" backing track. The other is Brian's Smile era vocal of "Wonderful" synced up with the "Rock With Me Henry" backing track.
