Would it be too much to ask for in FLAC or MP3? This is beyond outstanding.  The clarity is amazing, bravo my friend.

I came across a blog a few weeks ago that "offers" Smiley Smile and Wild Honey in "stereo". They sounded like pretty sweet stereo mixes to me. I never thought I would hear those albums in anything close to stereo, so they do well (of course, official stereo mixes are always ideal- Capitol will never lose money no matter how many fan stereo mixes are made imo).

Very good, Seltaeb!  I'd say equal to or better than the other guy's stereo version of the song on YouTube.

Now, about that "Stereo Good Vibrations In Progress"........   ;D

There have been more than a couple fan attempts at making a stereo version of "Darlin'".
This is better than all of them.
Once again, great job, Beatles backwards.  :)

Ahhhh, Carl... :'(

First thing I thought of. His voice was so unbelievably amazing. Thank goodness it was put to tape and preserved.

So what are you using to make these stereo mixes?  Sound Forge?

Wow, nicely done. This is really incredible. You definitely should try your hand at remixing more of their songs.

Speaking of, anyone heard isolated backgrounds of the Chicago tune?

Thanks, seltaeb! Your work is superlative as always. I would never have gotten a Smile I was 100% satisfied with without your mixes. ;D

While putting this together it was interesting to see how Brian pieced together the final edit. He used the same chorus 3 out of the 4 times (the intro is the 1st chorus without Carl's lead). You'll notice that Carl's transitional "ohhh Darlin'" is in there to bring in the last chorus, which might be something Brian would've done had edits been easier to perform back in '67.

So what are you using to make these stereo mixes?  Sound Forge?

Adobe Audition.

Note: The brass was the hardest element to extract. The 2nd verse brass was buried under a lot of stuff, but I might try to see if I can get it in there.

Very good, Seltaeb!  I'd say equal to or better than the other guy's stereo version of the song on YouTube.

Now, about that "Stereo Good Vibrations In Progress"........   ;D

The main difference you'll hear in this mix compared to the others is that this one's actually "mixed". I extracted every dry element and treated the project like mixing a new song. (Added EQ, Compression, subtle tape delay, a little distortion, etc)

The other difference here is that this is the first time (from what I've heard) that Carl's vocal is completely isolated. It took a few extreme editing measures, but I'm really happy with how the quality stayed intact.

Good Vibes is going well, I just got the 2nd verse isolated pretty clean, which was one of the main issues. I'll be posting more stuff soon.

Three things:

1. Great job!

2. Incredible how much Carl sounds like Brian here.

3. With all the crap being told about the Redwood story and how Mike was adamant about keeping Darlin' as a Beach Boy song... Does anyone really think, after hearing this, that Hutton and the others would have made a better job at it?

I'm going just go ahead and be a fuddy-duddy here:  you certainly did well with what's available, but it still, to me, sounds like a bunch of artificially extracted stuff put together.  It lacks the air that having discrete multis recorded simultaneously in the same room should have.  Not to say I'm not happy you're doing this, but I think there's no substitute for remixes from original tape.

I only take a critical bent here because I've a huge advocate for Wild Honey being remixed.  I've heard some really stellar remixes Linett has tried, and to me, they're just mind-blowing.  This mix is novel, but I think a real remix from the masters would change the way people thing about humanity and reality.

yeah i'd love a remix of Wild Honey.  I think it'd "get it" more.  stereo mixes do wonders for me in this album.

Sonic killer! Would be good to have a try at Smiley Smile, wouldn't it? Generally, stereo wins mono hands down. In my very humble opinion.
Mono works really well on sparsely produced stuff, like rockabilly, but stereo really helps densely produced stuff like "Pet Sounds". So I don't know if stereo would make much of a difference on "Smiley Smile", but I'd sure like to hear a stereo "Wild Honey".

I hear what you mean, I think. It's a bit flat sounding- I had also been thinking there was no space in the sound (or "air" as you put it). I put a little echo on it before adding it to my ipod playlist.

IIRC, Wild Honey generally sounded like the air had been sucked out of the room-- sort of like Smiley Smile with a backbeat.

This stereo mix sounded spot-on to me.  The bass sounded so freaking deep it was almost unbelievable (in a good way), but that might've been the mp3 player adding eq-- but I doubt it was.

Sorry I took so long to comment; only now got to hear the stereo "Darlin'."

VERY nice! Seriously, I wish you'd give us a hint as to how you did it other than just telling us Adobe Audition. :)  (Can the same thing be done with, say, Audacity??)

My only gripe: the EQ....too middle...could use a little more high end...have a feeling that it might kind of bring out some of the digital artifacts if you did that, though, know what I mean?
