Title: Re: Japan is crazy about The Beach Boys ;) Post by: Ron on July 13, 2012, 11:47:50 PM Pretty cool stuff. I'm sure the language barrier held them back a bit, but that's pretty cool nevertheless. I'm sure there's something we dont' quite catch like the three of them are sisters or something.
Unfortunately though.... my brain is only so big, so I dont' have enough space to fully appreciate Jap-Pop. I wish them well on the other side of the world. Title: Re: Japan is crazy about The Beach Boys ;) Post by: anazgnos on July 13, 2012, 11:55:35 PM Shonen Knife were pretty well known in the US in the 90s. Toured with Nirvana, got played on MTV, etc. Not terribly obscure as these things go.
Of all the things in Japan that could make a person say "wtf", I'm a little surprised that all it took for NewGuy was a pretty straightforward, faithful Beach Boys cover, sung in English by a traditional pop/rock band. Title: Re: Japan is crazy about The Beach Boys ;) Post by: The Shift on July 14, 2012, 12:14:29 AM Okay it's not entirely to my taste but at least they've given it their own arrangement and not tried for a note-for-note duplication as many others always seem to do:

Title: Re: Japan is crazy about The Beach Boys ;) Post by: Jaco on July 14, 2012, 01:42:16 AM This Could Be The Night - Harry Nilsson composition
It's about the last JAPANESE cover, but I give also some other versions: youtu.be/uU7FHLYsJN8 (http://youtu.be/uU7FHLYsJN8) Harry Nilsson (demo?) youtu.be/CMvVpM8ub_c (http://youtu.be/CMvVpM8ub_c) Modern Folk Quartet (Recorded: Gold star Studios, October,1965) youtu.be/bZaVHqDDyKI (http://youtu.be/bZaVHqDDyKI) Brian Wilson (1995) youtu.be/fz-aD-S_Mgo (http://youtu.be/fz-aD-S_Mgo) TATSURO YAMASITA (1978?) Now that I listen to it again, I think Brian might have borrowed some of the chords for his Let Him Run Wild, also written in 1965. I'm sure the language barrier held them back a bit, but that's pretty cool nevertheless. I'm sure there's something we dont' quite catch like the three of them are sisters or something. If you mean "sisters-sisters", no, I'm not sure because their faces vary from each other. But if "sisters-cousins" - that sounds more real.Unfortunately though.... my brain is only so big, so I dont' have enough space to fully appreciate Jap-Pop. I wish them well on the other side of the world. As for J-pop and other Js (folk, country etc.), I don't like any J. Not due to Japanese music is bad, no, this is not the reason. I just like English language more than other ones. How it sounds in speech, music etc. - perfect and beauty in itself. Imo English is the most cool- and stylish-sounding language on a planet! Title: Re: Japan is crazy about The Beach Boys ;) Post by: Jaco on July 14, 2012, 09:33:21 AM Is there a cover version of Busy Doing Nothing in Portuguese or Brazilian Portuguese?
I'd like to know, since I've just made one in Dutch. Title: Re: Japan is crazy about The Beach Boys ;) Post by: Nicko1234 on July 14, 2012, 09:41:55 AM There's only one winner for me - Brian Wilson's v-n. That is if compare. Just a shame that Brian couldn`t have recorded a better vocal. (http://slangeditorial.net/hyperliving/EyeScreams2.jpg) The early years Boredoms. Altho the crazy psychedelic sun-worshipping 20 minute take of "Fun, Fun, Fun" would be amusing too! Title: Re: Japan is crazy about The Beach Boys ;) Post by: rn57 on July 14, 2012, 11:51:58 AM Saw Shonen Knife a couple times in the 90s. They were pretty entertaining...but didn't play any BBs covers.
