This was first heard by the general public on "The Best Summers Of Our Lives" Beach Boys radio special in the Summer of 1976.

It's been on other legit comps and quite a few Good Vibrations sessions bootlegs since then.

That's Brian on the vocals by the way.  I love it!!  Coulda been a contenda for release!

Is it really? I hear Carl in there - could it be both of them?

Some say Brian, most (including me) say Carl. Don't think an official word has been given on the matter.

C'mon you guys it's obvious it's Carl ..his soulful voice isn't too hard to distinguish from Brian's soft angelic voice..

Definitely Carl. As is the early version of God Only Knows that's credited to Brian.

It's weird that Brian ended up using the verse from this version but not the chorus. I really feel like it should be the other way around. The Pet Sounds version of Good Vibrations has the most interesting chorus in my opinion, but not the most interesting verse.
For my money I think the 4/9/66 version has the best verse. I love the combination of the organ and piano, and the use of the addition of therimin and that lead guitar part really adds a great, eerie vibe that the other versions lack.

Is it really Carl on early GOK? Then there's sth. wrong with my ears because to me it sounds very Brian.

Yeah man, I'm pretty sure. It sounds like Carl, singing it louder and more forced than he eventually did on the record.

Not too different from all of the early Brian takes (IJWMFTT, WIBN, etc) where he sang louder, only to eventually soften the delivery.

But what puzzles me is chorus where I somewhat hear Brian at the back of Carl's singing. Or is it due to their slight similarity of voices? IDK. The only letdown of this v-n is Carl's voicing of theremin.

I think Brian sings the chorus.

Hey Seltaeb -

You're one of the guys who does the SMiLE fan mixes, right?  Did you do a stereo Good Vibrations recently or was that someone else? I was gonna give you some positive input about it way back when but forgot. It's really good, but it's kinda missing one little part that I always liked. It's just my opinion here, and I'm not sure if you could do it, but if you could insert that part that goes "Good, Good, Good, Good Vibrations, yeah!, a-well I'm pickin' up  Good, Good, Good, Good Vibrations, yeah!" part in there (example in the YouTubed version at the top of the thread). Do you know what I mean? It would fill your stereo mix out nicely, I think. Could you align it seamlessly in the mix?

Hey man -

Actually, that wasn't me on the GV mix, although I agree, it's very well done.

I started my own recently, but I'm a little stuck on what to do for the end, since I couldn't find the stereo instrumental for the fade. The one that's everywhere seems to be a different take.

And yeah, that would be pretty awesome! Maybe I'll throw together something quick since I have the session fresh on my harddrive.

J

Sorry, I thought it was you. I wonder who it was?

But yeah, take your time on it and do a good job!  Would be cool to have one finshed with Asher's lyrics too if possible.

Sanks!

Dude, this rawks.
Have you thought about putting "good, good, good...." vocals right at the beginning of the chorus, instead of waiting and only including the Brian/Carl alternate at the start? If you layered them from the start I think it would be really cool.

EXCELLENTE!  By jove, I think he's got it!

It's not the way I envisioned it, but I think it's better than what I was thinking. You didn't junk it up with the same line "Good, Good, Good, Good Vibrations, yeah!" over and over.  You saved that "a-well I'm pickin' up" for the 3rd time which is great! And it isn't too loud either - sounds like it belongs there!

And the Hum-Dee-Dums at the end and that Waaaaaahhhhh at the end maybe?

Stereo is where's it's at for this song, man!

Let's play it!  OK, we have two four-tracks......

Hahaha you're nuts man. Although, tt would sound pretty cool, but I'm thinkin we're gonna hear some major time-stretch elements, since you'd have to slow down the entire group harmony that comes in on the modulation (which has remnants of backing track and such - therefore keeping the formant in tact is gonna be rough)

Yeah, tried to make it not jump out of the mix too ridiculously (although it took a few listens to figure that out). Something had to be loudest, and I think the group vocal won that battle.

I have the "ahhhhh" done, as well as the "gotta keep those lovin good" section.  At this point I just need to maybe get the vocal a little more isolated on the verses (starts getting kinda phasy). The chorus could be more isolated, but I think that's the best I can get it, since there's about a million tracks going on there.

Totally agree about this song sounding awesome in stereo. That stereo hum be dum bit on TSS is pretty tantilizing!
