Title: Beach Boys' Instrumentals Compilation
Post by: Sheriff John Stone on July 03, 2012, 09:33:17 PM
I do a lot of driving with my job, and listen to a lot of Beach Boys in the car. That's one reason I enjoy some of the recent threads with combining albums and customizing track lists. I'm not bored with the music, but by shaking things up a bit, it breathes some new life into the listening experience.

I got a kick out of recently combining 15 Big Ones & Love You, and also Carl & The Passions & Holland. Now I'm working on combining MIU & L.A. Light Album. Anyway, I came up with another comp for the car - instrumentals.

The Beach Boys' Instrumentals - Stoked!

01. Shut Down, Part 2
02. Honky Tonk
03. Carl's Big Chance
04. Summer Means New Love
05. Let's Go Trippin'
06. Miserlou
07. Moon Dawg
08. After The Game (The Survivors)
09. Surf Jam
10. Stoked
11. The Rocking Surfer
12. Boogie Woodie
13. The Nearest Faraway Place
14. Passing By
15. Let's Go Away For Awhile
16. Pet Sounds
17. Diamond Head
18. Karate
19. Fall Breaks And Back To Winter
20. In The Back Of My Mind / Dennis Thanks Everybody (from Hawthorne)
21. Punchline

Yeah, some of the tracks have wordless vocals, but they're mostly instrumental, so I included them. "Look" almost made it; I'm still not sure whether to include it or not. I like the short backing track to "In The Back Of My Mind" and Dennis' "thank you". I suppose you could add the Stack O' Tracks songs, but they weren't meant to be instrumentals. This is a nice little CD for cruisin', inspired by Carl Wilson and the re-emergence of David Lee Marks!

Comments? Additions? Deletions?

Thanks. It's fun to hear the energy in those early surf instrumentals especially. :police:

Wow, I swear I never saw that before, but the sequencing is eerily similar. :o

So, they went with "Denny's Drums" (I thought about it) and two versions of "Let's Go Trippin". But, mine has "Karate" and "Punchline"!

You should use the backing track of When Girls Get Together.  8)

That's an expanded reissue - said album was originally released in the mid-60.

Flipside of The Survivors' Pamela Jean 45. Sounds nearly exactly like Summer Means New Love.

Yep, but I took the track from Pet Projects: The Brian Wilson Productions CD.

This is pretty rad!

thinking about it: Nearest Faraway Place might sound quite cool right after the Pet Sounds instrumental tracks (or before, or in between)

"The Rocking Surfer" is so terrible! Jesus. "Boogie Woodie" is mysteriously much better - at least the playing is pretty tight.

Imagine, if the BBs couldn't really sing, they'd just be some underground surf instrumental group you'd only hear in old hip junk shops.

"Let's Go Trippin'" would be their cult classic. Every bit as genius as The Tornadoes.

It's not even their song!

I know that. "Denny's Drums" would either be the sound of the waves crashing or precursor to the 1965 era Pink Floyd freakouts, depending on your vantage point.

I waivered back and forth, and chose the "candle".  ;D
